1. Traded something else for the Nexus, but some money would still be nice.
2. I recall him waxing lyrical over how much he liked the look of the one he dropped at the House of Bass. Neck crack will keep the price down.
3.
IT HAS TIERS!!! You're not wrong mate. I really never thought I'd get so organised but it feels so so good haha. So nice to have it a reasonable size, it's been so unmanageable for such a long time.
Do the Rat and Drive master really sound so different you need both? Really?
4. I can sort some brasswork. Also, get some brass top mirror screws, gives that riveted look.
5. I have an XLR to speakon lead for one of my amps, I think XLR is better than jack, as it is secured, they sort of predate speakons for people that figured jack was a bad speaker connection method on high output equipment.
6. Semi, like guitar shaped one.
7.
Hiwatt and Marshall. The Marshall went via the keyboard player who used it with a graphic heavily boosted to the left to get the bottom but neither were specific bass amps. Selling the Hiwatt was one of the worst decisions of my life, but that's another story. I certainly agree about the speakers.
It isn't the speakers and amps individually, it is how they interact. There is all sorts of impedance fun between the output transformer and the cabinet in addition to the frequency responses of both. Marshalls tend towards lacking low due to the preamp design and lightweight transformers, heavily boosting the graphic might have not helped the desired result.
8. I do a bit of that, people find satisfaction in assembling bitsas. Course some are basically not very good at it and they kind of suck, i've bought a few badly made of ok parts basses and parted them out, hang on to the nice bits till I have enough for a bass. Means I can indulge in some experimentation with the effcts of various construction things, like tight neck pockets and funny pickup placement.
9. Dub rigs were valve powered. Enough bottom.
10. Sticky foam pads are good, little bit of give relieve the shock when they are bumped. Wiping down the surface with meths to degrease before sticking anything is the way to go.
11. Doing a setup and moving on is cool, entry level basses with a good set up are really good for people starting out. I try and offer free/cheap setups to people starting out, but kind of hard to do without people 'making the fun'.
12.
And whats wrong with .50 to .110 in normal tuning? Steve Harris uses that, and i use that for Normal tuning, sometimes i use .55 to .115
There is more to string tension than thickness. These will be made to be high tension in the low tuning, probably a thicker core, so bring them up to standard tuning and they'll be far too high tension and something will give.
13.
It rather depends on the cabs doesn't it? Acmes definitely, BFB Midgets less so. I tend to think it's just the decreasing cost of the extra wattage myself. If you can have 500w for the same price that 300w would have cost you a few years ago, why not? Having said that, the increase in volume from going from 300w to 500w is insignificant.
Actually, expectations of bottom end are another factor. Also, apparently going from 300w to 500w can make a difference between not enough and enough, when Wil's Tech21 head into Schroeder cab was clipping, he borrowed my Matamp power amp, and ran the pre out, the Matamp was 500into 4ohm, and very unlikely to have a higher high pass than the Tech21, and it made enough difference to show it was the amp being the limiting factor rather than the cab. I think that might have been down to the extra bottom end you can get rather than volume from the bit more power.
14. It's the fashion for smaller cabs meaning they trade off sensitivity, thus need more watts for the volume.
15. Anyone got bust neo speakers taking up space? I'll take em off your hands.
16. Well, I have a 18" folded horn cab, in the style of an Acoustic 360 stashed near the Croft in Bristol. My other bass cabs are kind of miles from anywhere useful, but it is a short van hop to get them to any other Bristol venue.
17. Tempting even though I have the earlier oscillator version. This one is more bass friendly. Hmm. Could have one running into each rig.
18. John Birch.
19. The filtering built into your amp should remove 'dirty power' noise, a power conditioner won't help much over that. I think the actual problem is fluctuating voltage and such, which you need something pretty substantial to sort. Not really my area, but throwing up what I think I know, standing to be corrected. Basically, I've always been advised power conditioners do you no actual favours except being a sort of sacrificial item that can stop your amp being exploded.
20. My policy is stash enough big cabs about that you won't need to move one far. Maybe we should organise a cab community project between bass players.
21. Looks like lightweight isn't an issue for you. but the Peavey IPR glows blue to match.
22.
i think you might be blown away with the comparative volume you'll be able to obtain with newer more modern lightweight rigs! Heres another +1 for bass terror + barefaced cab
Add some valve swapping there, would guess the Trace rig isn't as grindy as that.
23. I bet most of the cost of a neo speaker isn't the neo, probably a tiny contributor to the unit cost. Its a really strong magnet so you don't need much of it is loads of the point. Economically, China is in a hugely strong position in so many levels. Being nice to people can make them work harder, but it usually makes them work more expensively. There are cheaper ways to instil a work ethic.
24. No preamp is a bunch less work and complication, so it might be a chunk cheaper than a full on bass amp.
