Nickel strings give some people allergies. Something made my fingers flare up for a bit, bit weird, maybe it was a particualr brand, but I generally use stainless steel. Anyway, you want try Elixirs, they are Goretex coated, feel a bit weird, but should sort the allergy, plus they stay bright for ages, should suit looking at your influences.

Ampeg has had their ups and downs, but the name holds plenty of value. They should be fairly familiar to any tech (because they've been around a long time, rather than a particular habit of needing a tech), but some can be a nutpain to work on. Check around for a good tech, there are plenty of bodgers about (like me).

Try and score that Matamp Quasar the bloke selling the SVP preamp in for sale has, it is as awesome as it is heavy. Totally impractical and heavier than many valve heads, but I like them. For lightweight option, the Peavey IPR. I use a Trace V-Type preamp into a Quasar power amp, sometimes a VT bass or a Paradriver instead.

Basically, a lot of the vintage amps could double up, because cabs were bigger (modern bass cabs have a smaller trend and are thus more power hungry), but more importantly, output transformers were beefier. The Hiwatts and Sound Citys used beefy Partridge transformers, because men were men and could be expected to carry them around. Modern guitar amps tend to scrimp on the transformers and power supplys because guitars don't need the bottom end, plus guitar cabs haven't got smaller, 4x12s are still the same as they were in the 60s. Also, modern tones tend to be cleaner and more bottom heavy, or at least more bottom heavy, that needs lots of power. If you want a guitary tone, guitar amps will be fine.

Might be a spade connector or EMG type "kwik konnekt" or whatever they call the computer type connectors they have.

Update to this, I just whipped out some forgotten strings from my meths bath, it has had many sets go through it, this set now have rust spots, so the meths is probably absorbing water from the air, and allowing strings to rust, so change your meths often, or at least don't leave strings in it for 6 months.

I'm having trouble with finding a guitarist. Problem is I want to play pretty gear dependent stuff, and I'm pretty picky about tone, and I have an expectation they should have a guitar rig comparable to mine (since I don't even play guitar, that seems fair), but as soon as they start eqing without their head in front of the cab, I know they are going to suck. The Bahrain troubles might be forcing my mate who has been teaching music back over here, he has mad keyboard skills, its gonna be like Doom Sigh, in club singer style.

Newtone can do stuff with the cores that is more cunning than just making fatter strings, gives higher tension without hugeness, is pretty convenient, but less of a warning to people not to try and tune to standard. Had trouble with that previous, with a lady whose guitar I fitted with a custom set tuned to some sort of open A# tuning (hence intonation being set appropriate and far different from standard) , some other band was fairly insistent they were going to borrow the guitar and retune it to standard, then thinking she was a dick for refusing to let them.

Is it for Harry Shearer? Would sort of make sense.

Newtone strings wind to order. Best telling them the sort of tension you like and your tuning and having them make strings to match, rather than telling them a gauge, they will know the physics better.

Ampeg kind of dropped the ball on their Fliptop style jobs by making them hugely expensive or hybrid. The left a gap people were shouting for, and Ashdown have stepped in, they aim for that trad sound, so it isn't a departure for them, plus with the Little Giant, they already had the style coming. As for loads of watts, they might be the trad sound, but there's plenty wielding 5 strings or detuning out there, which will suck every watt you can give them.

Actually, thinking more, measure it up, if it is about the same size as the compartments in the SVT 8x10, Jendsen MOD10 or Eminence B810 for a mini SVT tone. Won't be loud without 3 more of them though.

If you use it as a guitar cab in a dual amped rig, for which it would be ideal, stick Celestion Vintage 10s/G10s in it, are the 10" version of the Vintage 30.

Think the first thing to do is figure what you don't like about the existing frets and see if that can be sorted directly. Re-fretting is major surgery, and narrow frets are kind of better for intonation, the problems you are having might be another setup issue.
