1. When you have the speaker out, just make a note of what it is, probably Celestion, and get in touch with Celestion, they may recommend a functional equivalent.
2.
Hi Oli, please remind me of yourself. I'm Sorry, I've gone blank. How do you know me?
Student at Aber same time as you. Was learning to play bass and tried forming a band with Raj, but Joe stole him from me. Er, big green coat, that I still wear.
3. What sort of thing are you looking for? With the right cab I'm pretty sure this will do big and loud and clean.
4. Is it a rosewood baord? Sometimes they can dry up and shrink, especially with aircon and central heating. Soaking the board in lemon oil can have a surprisingly dramatic effect. Skimming the ends off then doing it is the even better option.
5.
And as long as the wattage of the speaker is higher than the amp you'll be fine, won't blow anything.
That isn't really true, there are plenty of scenarios where you can blow a speaker that is rated higher than the amp, and being in a wrongly tuned box is one of them, when the speaker resonance and the box resonance are close together, the speaker can move quite far on not much power, and go past its limits.
6.
Did you manage to wind the salesman up into thinking you'd buy it?
By telling him you'd already bought one cheaper online.
7. Wow, that one looks in a worse state than my one when I got it.
8. Oh, Barefaced 69er is gunning for the original SVT cab tone with modern lightness, dispersion and power handling. Not quite sure of the status since the Barefaced forum went, but is listed on the site without description.
9. Try a Sansamp VT into something fairly transparent (like any of the other rigs you mention).
10. Lot of definition is in the mids, and the muff and sansamp tend towards scooping mids.
11.
Hi, Has anybody had any experience with matamp? I'm thinking of getting a valve amp and these look pritty good.
Do a search, there are a few threads, This one, and this one are pretty good.
12.
I know, but with an AD200B perched on top? I don't think so!
Just put it somewhere else. The purpose of cabs is to put sound into a room first, amp stand second.
13.
So, for old skool sound that won't break my back, how about a pair of Ampeg SVT 210 AV cabs side by side supporting my tube head? Sounds good in theory...
Stacked so all speakers in a row is better.
14. I've tricked out a few of these now, they are really nice instruments, new pickups and tuners and they are competitive with their daddy's guitars.
15. A lighter flame will sort the scruffy poking out threads after a cutting. Correct application of fire and sharp things will correct most problems.
16. £50 BIN in Birmingham. Those cones with the aluminium caps look a lot like desireable ones, like Fanes, or the other one with metal caps. Hard to go wrong for £50.
17. I think the principle of Caveat Emptor is so named because it has been about since Roman times, or at least since we were in the habit of writing law in Latin, so I think it has stood the test of time as a good principle.
18.
Have a look at the Yamaha bass here: http://usa.yamaha.com/products/musical-ins...=product_lineup Click on the photo and do an enlargement. Then have a look at the Allparts P-Bass surround in metal here. It's £32 !!!! http://www.allparts.uk.com/online-shop/gui...ass-p-3594.html I can't show you a Musicman pickup surround because I've been looking for one and I can't find one anywhere. I think there's a opening here for a modest business you could run in the evenings. A small eBay presence with international sales, that kind of thing. You'd do all right. The main thing is that the initial investment would be miniscule and there would be practically no risk. If it doesn't work out, you've not lost anything. If you're entrepreneurially minded, it might be worth a punt. There is someone in the US making custom surrounds already, but are very expensive and not everybody wants to order from the US. Their site is down at the moment - so I can't check.
I have one of those P bass surrounds, it doesn't fit any of my (non-Fender) P basses. If anyone wants it, or 10, let me know. I do sort of want to do it as a business, but those things are a little specialist. I only did the rick plates because three people were interested right away, I've not really had much further interest. Was gonna do P plates next, it is easiest if I have a pattern from which to work.
19.
With that facility, you could probably build yourself a nice little part-time business making pickup surrounds. You can't get one for a MM, and even the P-Bass ones cost over £20.
Can you gimme an example? I'm guessing you mean the immediate surround, rather than a full plate, I can't quite picture a MM style one.
20. People like compressors, that do that all the notes the same volume thing, kind of like guitarists that always pay with distortion and never learn to actually play their instrument. I think it might be part and parcel of being in a band to be in a band, go through the motions style, rather than doing it because you have music you need to express.
21.
hey man. do you make tuners? i'd love some ally open gears with me logo on. brass bridges too, w' adjustable spacing.
Pmed.
22. I think the low end roll off on sealed cabs is the main thing valve amps 'like', but there is probably some impedance thing too that I don't understand yet (see other thread discussing impedance curves). You can get some messyness in the bottom end of some valve amps, that a sealed cab will clear up or something, not something I've experienced, been happily using ported cabs with valve amps, I don't really think it is an issue with well designed cabs, I suspect it is the 'boomy' cab tuned too high that gets loads worse with the valve amp's drive meaning a lot of content in that area.
23.
Forgive me for sounding a bit "rough" but what would happen if I basicly attacked it with a saw and cut it in hald lol. I know boxes are all about air mivement etc etc but just wondering before I do summit ill regret
If you wanna get woodworky, best making a new cab from scratch.
24. I've been doing this sort of stuff at my Dad's workshop: Custom steel scratchplates. Also the custom control plate from brass on DaveMauddib's Jaguar. Simple one offs are doable, but stuff like scratchplates with inside curves and suchlike need to be done in batches to be worthwhile.
