Can I use a power amp with my little bastard?
Mr. Foxen replied to cameltoe's topic in Amps and Cabs
I will! Stupid question time again- how come you can't just take the output of the LB from the speaker out rather than the DI? Not that I'm about to do this, just wondered
Impedance again. An input on an amp is usually 1 or 2 thousand ohms (I think), which there isn't a tap for, even if you could turn the output down enough to be appropriate. -
you're not going to be going below low B and many of you won't be going below low E.
Is this part saying its not for ridiculous sub detuning contrabass action, more of a really beefy in the lows you hear for sensitivity purposes? The Big one/sub is still the one for mad low end, but will need the juice? Would this be totally awesome with my big valve Matamp Slave, which I am fairly sure was made to power an oldschool dub rig?
Not really. Different alignment and design goals. Yes, I suspect it would. That's another niche then!
Hmm, when are these due? Someone is interested in my GS412 which this could potentially replace.

Looks like an Xciter copy, basically, one channel in the fx loop is it. Don't need the other stereo half, unless you ran a second amp, means you have the option of running vocals through there too.

I think they use slightly oversized jacks too, that wreck your socket, although they feel snug at the time. I empathise with them.

Can I use a power amp with my little bastard?
Mr. Foxen replied to cameltoe's topic in Amps and Cabs
I think the bass attack will act as a preamp. Downloading a manual to have a check - says it has line level output. Advantage of a power amp is the amount of power you get to cost. Plus they are made to be uncoloured. If you other amp has an FX loop, usually you can plug into the fx return to go straight to the power section and bypass the preamp, effectively rendering it a power amp and the LB as the preamp. -
Yeah I'd like to know this! I've no idea what to use in that instance. Not something I've had to deal with before. I guess I need to know which way to go with this. I'm going to need another head for my other band, as the LB is just too fat and thick sounding, so.... I could either rip the HA3500 head out of my Hartke combo and use that for the other band, PLUS buy a cheap power amp to boost the LB I could buy one amp head to do both (i.e a little mark or similar) which has a power amp in it. I could buy a regular amp head (or use the Hartke) to do both- but wouldn't this affect the tone of the LB? With the above comments I'm presuming you need the power amp stage rather than just pre-amp.
A power amp to use with the LB, plus a nice preamp pedal, like a sansamp or something, that has the juice to run a power amp, should cover you. Maybe the Tonehammer, although I dunno what the output is like on them, but its a clean machine compared to the driveyness of the LB, and figuring that's what you are after for other band. Probably the most budget/good option. -
SALE PENDING: Trace Elliot GP12 SMX Pre-amp,
Mr. Foxen replied to Shockwave's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
Well i dont have that power amp anymore! If the little bastard has a Line out then you can use a power amp with it. But you wouldnt be using the output valves of the ashdown so would lose that particular tone.
Little bastard has a tap on the output transformer for the line out, so you do get the power valve tone. The power amp I have going is still going. -
This is a 2x15 big sub roughly then? Pair up nicely with a high passed driven guitar rig?

Can probably track down the owner of copyright from the copyright info in it and ask them. A list of what is in there, such as a scan of the index/contents would be a start.

Not getting a good sound from Warwick 410
Mr. Foxen replied to TorturedSaints's topic in Amps and Cabs
Was the Peavey 4x10 vey deep front to back? I've found those 4x10s with a slot port (think they are TVX) go really low compared to most cabs. Usually the cab is the weak link, and those Peaveys might weigh a ton, but are surprisingly hard to beat. -
Exactly how much salt should we take this with? I would like to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're joking but there's a lot of bullshit talked about tone in this forum.
Not literally like a piano, although if I had a felt ended beater handy I'd have had a go, but the acoustic ringing sustain with a heavy set of steels on it was definitely what on a bass is described as 'piano tone'. Definitely one of my more successful frankensteins. It sold on the strength of its sound, because it is about as ugly as this: Quote from chap that bought it:
F*ck ugly as it is I'm really pleased with it. It sounds good.
Maple to rosewood neck change......what a difference!
Mr. Foxen replied to gjones's topic in Bass Guitars
A quality such as its dominant resonant frequency would probably cover a lot. Density is another factor, once it is seasoned, moisture checked and gone over for imperfections, as all lumber stock is prior to use. I neck will be made from a fairly consistent piece of wood, otherwise it would curl up pretty fast (as you know some do anyway eventually), so the weight of it will be a fairly indicative factor to its properties when compared with another identically contructed neck. -
A full scan and upload of that would be incredibly useful to various people.
if it can be done in one box, why not.
Basically, because you'd hugely compromise its function as a bass amp, for the sake of what can be achieved so much more practically with a pocket sized device. I don't think any of those amps listed could be described as having 'oomph', especially not if a drummer using sticks is involved. And especially not for reggae. As soon as a combo becomes big enough to be dealing with drummer volume, headphone sockets and CD ins become a bit superfluous. Maybe one of those keyboard amp combos you see in Cash Converters will cover you.
-
Also, why does the CD have to be playing through the same speaker? And why do you need headphones from the amp? Surely if you are headphoning, anything with a headphone out will do, and why not a separate portable CD player?
-
For that money I think you can do much better than those, if you go second hand. Behringer BDI21, some little power amp few hundred watts for not much money on ebay, and a mini mixer like this, plus whatever cabs you can get your hands on will cover those requirements with a handful of adapters. I reckon that would sound shockingly good, far ahead of those little combos.
-
I think the neck joint has a bit to do with it. Once I've shimmed the neck so it is tight in the pocket, or put inserts and machine screws in, they tend to feel more lively. Most lively bass I've played was my Wishbass though. Machine screws did make a jazz copy sound like a piano though.

Old guitarist got a strat set, definite improvement on a mexi Fender.

Bah, been intending to go and have a go with that in there. Bring it round the House of Bass so I can have a go.
