All watts are the same but due to the much discussed harmonics you get from valves, a valve amp "sounds" louder than an equal SS amp. Which, I think, is the point PJ is making in the video.
Think you have to clip it to get harmonics. Not really an option with 650w.
 2.
Quite right, but does that mean that the New Testament is Nu Metal then?
New Testament is hippy stuff. Probably "stoner rock" [spits]. When people say the Bible isn't true, the mean the New Testament is not True Doom.
Is this the 4x12?
4x12 and lightweight would barely be Doom. This is a 6x12. Doom.
 3.
Indeed but most of us would rather buy some gear that works as sold than do a degree in electronics and wade through the tons of opinion and misdirection on the web.
This thread is pretty good for it, which is why anything even vague get's pounced on. I think Claber's degree is engineering, but I'd guess electronics figured highly.
After reading that attachment written by an engineer in an attempt to clarify things. We get to the crunch.... The big question is "How do we know what the average power over time is and what the speakers limits are?" If anyone knows a quick easy way to calculate that from the smoke and mirrors leaflet that comes attached to your nice shiny things let me know. Go careful when running your amp to distortion.
That is kind of why that isn't so helpful. The main thing is to remember speakers sound bad before they break. They also get quieter when the heat up, due to their impedance increasing, its called power compression. With bass guitar, its not an issue unless you play full on drone, due to the quieter bits in the dynamic range giving cooling time. Over excursion at the volume peaks is the killer.
 4. I use a detuner. Works fine. Can be an issue on really skinny necked basses though, putting the other strings out. Unless you have tapper low action, tuning one string a tone lower isn't gonna make enough offs to worry about. Certainty not gonna break anything.
 5.
thin and fizzley?
Yeah, you know that thing when he says his rack controls the temperature of the sun isn't real, right?
 6.
You've basically just agreed with everything I wrote, while saying you disagree? Weird, I'm lost. To recap: Power ratings mean nothing. When you go into a shop and the salesman says you must have speakers bigger than amp, or amp bigger than speakers you will know he is talking rubbish. I said that distortion is bad if you don't know what you are doing. Using low powered valve amps, power brakes etc sounds like you probably do. It was intended as straightforward advice for the newbies who are always asking the question. "I've got a 100W power amp what speakers do I need?" and "Why did I fry my 400w speakers with my 150W amp?"
Any speakers can go with any amp. There is no relationship between the "wattage" rating of them that needs to be adhered to, or even a guideline. Your points 2 and 3 are what I disagree with. If you have a 100w power amp you need big speakers if you want to gig.
At this point the amp is distorting and producing much more than the rated power of the amp. The power will be dissapated as heat in the coil and literally melt the speaker.
Is also not true. People distort their power sections really often without understanding what is happening, they just know it sounds awesome. They are often called guitarists. Don't make generalisations for the benefit of people who don't understand, they are the reason why they don't understand. Because they are wrong.
 7.
Awesome!!! But I think I'll get some dirty looks when I tip up to play on a Sunday morning at church with some Doom-age in tow . Still, worth keeping in mind if I need some extra cabs - trouble will be moving everything (I've got a Polo hatchback) and storage. But I like the idea of lots of stupidly large cabs to get my point across to our drummer HTH, Ian
The Old Testament is Doom. One is a lightweight, so might be good for ya.
 8.
Layman's guide to the Speaker power v Amplifier power myth exploded with no maths or numbers (or techie terms?) Generally people mistake loudness for noise and the untrained ear will ignore distortion. Distortion is your enemy. Even comparatively small amounts of distortion, using effects or over-driving pre-amps can be bad if you don't know what you are doing. Once an amplifier starts distorting the speakers are not going to get any louder no matter how far you turn up the volume knob. Everything will just get noisier and less intelligible, defeating the object! Published amplifier power is fairly meaningless as it is given as a power with a small amount of distortion. A lot of amps can give out huge amounts of power at huge levels of distortion! Large amp -> small speakers. The danger is that the user will turn the amp up beyond what the speakers can handle. This will cause distortion in the speakers. The speaker will either overheat or mechanically destroy itself. Small amp -> large speakers. Again the amp can get turned up beyond the point at which it produces nice clean sound. At this point the amp is distorting and producing much more than the rated power of the amp. The power will be dissapated as heat in the coil and literally melt the speaker. So neither is the correct solution: 1. Use your ears not the spec sheets or labels. If you hear distortion - stop and turn down! 2. Getting huge speakers is genearally a waste of money if you don't have the amp to drive them. 3. Getting a huge amp is generally a waste of money if you don't have (or plan on getting) speakers that it can drive.
Still trying to disagree with the rest of the thread then? 1 is fine. 2 is wrong. Huge speakers are awesome for sensitivity, so you get plenty of volume from not much power 3 is also wrong. A huge amp can drive any speakers. Also, a distorting amp will only melt speaker coils if it is outputting enough power to do so, even fully distorted, it might not be. And noisy and unintelligible is awesome. Distorting power amps are awesome. This is why we have power brakes and low powered valve amps. Or really really loud high powered valves amps of Doom.
 9.
TBH I hadn't cranked the volume too much but it's worth keeping in mind if I ever try the rig out live (unlikely). I might take a pair of the 12's along with the 4x10 and 1x15, and run them full-range without the x-over - that sounded pretty good and only required my GK and one of the PS1000 amps. For the above piccies I wired the 12" cabs in series-parallel so the whole lot was still 8 Ohms, and the power handling should be 800w rms, so not being over-driven by the amp (500w bridged into 8 Ohms). And I'm a careful chap Still, a worthwhile exercise! Has now left me with cab-GAS HTH, Ian
I've got some cabs going, all come pre-approved for Doom.
 10. What is 'cube power? 650w of which = 2000w of solid state.
 11. £65 posted. Some paint chips, but no crackles or anything.
 12.
Are there any that are reasonably priced and reliable? Cheers, Chris
Many, amny of them. Throw up some examples of sound you are after. Sansamp VT or BDDI is most obvious.

 15.
I like the copper strip idea, one 5mm strip from the E to G tuners going under the A and D. If your 100% that it works then I think I don’t have to worry about the grounding issue, I am assuming I still need to ground one saddle to the jack/preamp.
Its all the same elctrically. coated strings might do you no favours though. test with a meter.
 16.
i shouldn't say this, but... any pics ?
Thread hijack! Original sale thread
 17.
I did a gig with a band called Pombagira a little while back and the vocalist/guitarist had a monstrous rig. A pair of Sunn Model T's, a pair of old Marshall's (super leads I think) an some other old valve heads running through 4 4x12's and 2 8x10's. The first band I've seen that actually made my balls flap about ...Im being super serious!
I nearly sold dude another 4x12. Laney Klipp one, think he has a klipp head or two. Wizbat; make sure those 8x10s are side by side and not spread, combing is very real.
 18. Random speakers and bodgery to make them sound is Doom. Cab config/speaker size doesn't really tell you enough about the sound. If you are messing with crossovers, running the bassy cab full range and high passing the drivey (guitar type cabs) is ideal. Sansamp likes PA cabs because that is what it is designed for. Went to see this band on the weekend. He has more amps and cabs now, and borrowed the other bands bass rig, since they were a man down. It blew the electrics when he hit a note, roughly 4000w draw. Had to unplug a few and back in business. Light bulbs shattered and fell from the ceiling.
 19. Brass nut for grounding, or ground all the machine heads together with a strip of copper on the back of the headstock. I just have a copper strip between mine. No breakage troubles.
 20. If someone wants a black one with a badass II and Seymour duncan active pickup, I will match this price.
 21.

Damn, that is very close to what I'm after. Compare and contrast:
 22. Them Koreans are getting a bit good at making basses. Less troublesome EU law causing difficulties too. Not unappealing to a manufacturer I'd guess. Deciding quality will drop due to having slantier eyed workers seems a bit racist.
