How can a fretless (or Fret Less (sic)) have a fretboard
Mr. Foxen replied to Mykesbass's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
To fret (verb) a note is to apply pressure to a string at the appropriate point in order to shorten/lengthen the vibrating string and increase/decrease the pitch accordingly.
I thought the more correct term would be 'stop' on a non-fretted instrument, as in 'double stop'. -
Can probably get hold of lignum vitae pieces to carve (grind probably) them from old bearings and such, I think bowling balls were made of it too. And yeah, basswood is as soft as soap, dents really easily.
OK - I had a go at engraving last night - sadly it was an absolute disaster! I either don't have the right tools - or more likely the right skill or steady enough hand to get the right result. So that's a no-go. However I'm pretty sure I can do a convincing Ibanez logo on a card underlay if you're interested in that.
I've got a dremel copy with a router type collar thing, if you used that and a pointed bit set to depth, would that be the way?
Hi, How dinged is the Jazz Bass, noticed marks on back of the neck, are there any chips to the body? There seems to be reflection in the photos or is the black dulled / scuffed. Also no neck issues / good action? Thanks Steve
No body chips that expose wood. It is scuffed/swirled in places, probably could t-cut it out, there are weird reflections on it though, in the first set of photos, suppose compare the two as they have similar reflections. I have a bunch more pics, pm me an email address if you want to see. Didn't want to make this page a pain to load up with loads of pics. Basically, on the strung jazz pic, the top horn shows the dull patches, accentuated by the photograph. The action on the jazz is very good, I've set it up, and it was easy, no neck weirdness or anything. The bridge is not filed, it hasn't got much more down adjustment, but a shim will sort that, standard badass II sort of thing.

Vintage MIJ (formerly J@pCr@p) Spotting
Mr. Foxen replied to Bassassin's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Maya Precision Interesting looking pickup, would that classify as a "lipstick" pickup? This talkbass thread has a whole lot of discussion as to what a similar looking bass might be. One post says that the bass in the talkbass thread might be Korean not Japanese. Same for the one on ebay as per the above link?
The 'Made in Japan' on the neck plate is a bit of a giveaway in this case. Looks to be not solid wood. -
I'd get a meter and check the resistance (to estimate impedance) at the jack you are going to plug into the amp once you've wired it all up, just to make sure. All sorts of potential complication there.

If you like the sound of the one you have, get another one the same. Anything else will change the sound. Stack them up, or put the one you have on a box. A wedge would work too, but that's not bass rig.

Squier 50's Precision Classic Vibe on eBay
Mr. Foxen replied to Grand Wazoo's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Was there a buy it now before someone bid? Post it up, then if you want it at that, you can message the dude and have him cancel the bids so it reappears. -
I'd hold out for the bridge turning up. Makes the difference between a restoration and a Frankenstein resurrection into something new.
+1. It may be OK tuning wise, but it's far too small and will chuff at high levels. Two ports with the proper duct length will work much better; minimum recommend diameter with fifteens is 6 inches per driver. While at it, the cab could use panel to panel bracing fore to aft, side to side and top to bottom. Doing so with even single 1 inch wide braces will quadruple the panel stiffness.
Is this mostly for when you are cramming loads of power into it? I have noticed old cabs have small ports, guessing its because the 2 15s are for sensitivity for lower powered valve amps, and just didn't take those sort of power levels.

Love the fact he could have reassembled the tuners to be correct, but chose not to. -
So it's trivial and it should be what I want..

That with dark tort is about my ultimate looking bass. Shame I can't get on with jazzes. -
Boost around 25Hz, ensure the pickups on the bass have a peak around 25-60Hz, ?
Not sure that is so useful for filling out for a missing guitarist, more for carving a space under an already dense mix. Plus 25hz is mostly speaker upset and not much sound. Edit: Also, get your own diads in, play busier lines, and add extra notes to any note you play a bunch of times, there's usually an octave of 5th you can reach.
I have that set up with my Attitude, The woofer being the Bass, and the P-pickup being the bright top end, and not to seem a fool but "comb filtering"? Edit: Spelling
This Should be so bad from the separate pickups, as the bridge one isn't making the real low end. I had a split signal going to a pair of 8x10s either side of the drummer and it was really noticeable.
-
Dual amped rig, one beefy and bassy, one toppy. Cut the bass from the toppy one to avoid the comb filtering.
Ta. Could you give me the link to the right piezo element thingy at Maplin?
Fairly sure there isn't a right one, just one of the disc ones and stick it under the 'bridge'.
-
Could you check the resistance? If sleeve to sleeve has a higher resistance than the tip to tip, it would indicate one is a screen, whereas a speaker cable should be both the same, as the two cores are identical.
-
Sticking a cab either side of the drummer isn't great. Tried it with a pair of 8x10s and the comb filtering was very noticeable. You are unlikely to get a cab that will stand alone and give a sub option in addition to your 6x10, unless you get a cab with a dedicated mid driver, which would pretty much replace your 6x10.

Is Mahogany OK as a cabinet material?
Mr. Foxen replied to Thunderpaws's topic in Repairs and Technical
Probably won't be as good as ply. Better making a bass out of it. Resonant properties that are good in guitars are bad in cabs, you want a cab's material to be a dead sounding as possible. -
Offer to mission down there to review these stands.

What's the issue? dubious jack/switch? The boss switch issue can sometimes be fixed with tape over the switch tip under the battery lid, that wears short.
