Plus if you want more volume, use a more sensitive cab. In fact, I think that Acoustic 2x15 can be tuned to happily accomodate a pair of Kappalite 3015 (cause I was eying that one on ebay for the same purpose) which should give you a bit more sensitivity. Also, I totally hated the 50w Vintage Modern for bass (but don't tell my ex-guitarist that I know that).
-
What is your preamp plan? Also, probably best going for a PA amp, rather than one marketed for bass. Been eying this to make a crap offer on it, but spend all my pennies: QSC What sorta power you looking for?

Is that pickguard a replacement?
Thanks for the quick replies, with regards to the Blackstar pedals, my guitarist has a HT dual. I had a crack with it a while back and to be honest I thought it just sucked all the bass out of my pedal. EQ tweaking sorted that but I dont think I would buy one if I had to tweak the EQ like that every time I wanted to use it on a different amp.
Valve change helps some, there are bass mods for them out there, but a clean blend is the true path.
-
And probably most importantly, what sort of sound are you after? I have literally not ideal what rosewood for a body sounds like.
What alternatives to sustain and good harmonics is there that is considered beneficial to your sound? I thought in any case that's what you are after?
If that is what you are after, frets and rounds are your best bet. Since he is fretless, and possibly flats, might not be the priority, when you could have a nice warm thump.

I know 6 ohms is close enough to 8 to be happy, but since its actually 5.3 or so, is the 4 ohm tap more appropriate?

Super rapid Badass delivery, from a wanted d to fitted in a couple of days. Cheers.

Might be better off just getting another cab than tinkering with it. Ports are a bit dependent on what driver you want to put in it. I don't especially rate Celestions for bass, although my 8x10 is full of them. Make sure that speaker is dead though, if it works as is, leave it, but a new speaker will probably cost more than a second hand cab that is already ported.

Kinda depends on the sound you are after. Heavy bridge is all about sustain and harmonics, but if its fretless, probably not what you are after.

Schaller Strap locks... and how to fit them properly!!
Mr. Foxen replied to EBS_freak's topic in Accessories and Misc
Nothing much interesting to picture. Everything looked as above. Problem was, one of the cheapy strap locks I was using had a duff thread, so wouldn't do up on the strap, gotta send it back for a new one. The other set I put on ex-drummer's guitar worked fine though. -
That sounds well dodge. The valves are isolated from the speakers by the transformer, so not much going on at that end should affect them, thats why the transformer gets upset by misloading. Did you check the impedance of the cab with a meter? Just cause it says 8 ohms doesn't mean its so, practice room cabs can have bodged in new speakers.
This is a leather hole punch... and can be used, as its name suggests, to punch a hole in leather (it also works for vinyl, pleather etc). This is perfect for widening that standard hole in your strap to enable the shaft of the straplock to pass through with a snug fit. (Better than hacking it with a Stanley knife eh?!)
I just scored a set of these up to 10mm for this purpose, once I'm done, I'll cheerfully post it off for cost to someone else who wants to do this, as long as it keeps travelling round basschat and eventually gets back to me. -
Why is one quieter? HAve they got different valves in? Or is the circuit different?
There is Soundhouse a bit further up the high street in Cheltenham, not been there for 10+ years though. In Gloucester, there is a Soundhouse. Went in a few weeks back, nothing amazing just the usual squire and Ibanez stuff. There is also a shop just out of town on Barton Street called A Remus sound. I havent been in for ages although keep meaning too. I drove past it last week and they had what looked very much like a Wawrick Thumb hanging in the window. The younger guy in there was an amazing guitarist and bassist. I presume its still him who runs it. There is a small music shop in the new Quays development, but I think its just cheap crap. Sadly Gloucester Music Co on Westgate Streets shutdown several years ago and is now a EU food shop or something. There are also a crap converter and similar shop oppossite that sometimes has something of interest in them on Northgate Street by Wilinksons.
A Remus Sound is great, I bought my first bass cab there, they were really sound even though I nearly trashed everything with my rucksack. They had a really nice Alembic copy I was eying but someone bought it the next day.
true dat, valves are much more linear in their distortion and clip alot softer than transistors. Valve > SS for clean hifi sounds with the added bonus of being able to crank it. I want to know where people get this misinformed view that valve amps only sound good when cranked and can't do hifi sounds!
SS does nice hifi sounds too though.

I've seen them on ebay, and they are easy enough to tweak into shape. I'm kind of unconvinced by them, although if you have monorail bridges, its nice to keep all your strings earthed with it rather than a strip of copper tape under them.
Whilst I agree fundamentally with what you're saying, I think your bias shows through the last line of your response, but you are after all entitled to your opinion. I'll take your thoughts on board and I'll chuck it in the skip. I think the coil's gone and it'll cost more to recone it than it cost to replace it with something half decent. I have no problems with the amp or the sound of the cab and yes I agree - it's out of warranty and it does look like it's a pisstake to ask. If it had been used week in week out and died as a result and being heavily used, then fair enough. I think I'd probably done a dozen gigs with it and the same number of practices over a 3 year period so I was quite surprised to see it fail. Oh well, what can you do?
Does it have a rub when you move the cone? I had a 12" one fail and take the amp with it (and another amp I tested it with) because the wires from the terminals to the coil were touching.
-
That rating is the thermal power handling, it may well have failed mechanically, kind of a useful lesson in why those ratings are unhelpful. Plus your amp might be 180w RMS, but can output twice that in certain circumstances. Really, let it go, sticking another speaker in probably makes it better anyway. I don't rate the Sicas, just stuck an Eminence delta in my 1x12 combo and it sounds loads better.
-
The speaker in there is fairly rubbish, it is in a small sealed box, fine for the power of the combo, but not worth putting any more power into. Sound surprisingly good with a guitar amp into them though, good Doom sorta sound.

making a chinese bass sound like an american one...
Mr. Foxen replied to ogri's topic in Repairs and Technical
Is the cheapy bridge one with grooves for the saddles? If the saddle can move when you wiggle the string near it, then you'll be losing some energy to that. Also, check relative pickup heights. -

If you are really curious, get yourself some hardware swapping in to find where the tone is. I reckon the Badass is a major. Then the pickups. -
JoeGarcia has one of his GS412s, don't think he'll part with it though.

Is it the one with two smaller speakers at the top?
