not sure what speaker you have in your 126 to be classed as "kinda poor" but as far as I know, Acoustics came with either Eminence or JBL speakers. Neither of which could be described as anything other than top quality. My 220 head (175 watts) and 402 cab (2x15) are louder (and better sounding) than any modern amp I've tried, including Ampeg and Markbass!
When I said 'kinda poor' I meant in comparison to modern drivers, seeing as this is the Barefaced thread and all, the Eminence kappalites pull pretty far ahead of trad stuff. I'm fairly frustrated that I can't fault them. Further research has told me its a square magnet Eminence in there.
Not sure about all this furniture polish spray phobia - I've cleaned off guitar bodies loada times in the past with pledge-type products. My lacquer-finished guitars are PU or acrylic and they are entirely impervious to furniture polish. The silicone-phobia thing is all about getting traces into pores which can then affect the surface tension and adhesion of any subsequent layers. thats all fair enough but we're not talking rspray of steel or wood here, we're talking about cleaning a bass. I don't think Pledge-type sprays are anywhere near aggressive enough to get under a coating blemish and cause delamination of a cured 2-part acrylic or PU lacquer. If the thread was entitled "How do I best clean my guitar ready for respraying" then i could understand everyone saying "No Silicone!"
Its considering the ongoing life of your instrument. It should probably outlast you, and there are plenty of 40 yr. old instruments that are due a refin. I've seen the horrible mess an attempt at finishing the top of an acoustic that had fairly severe contamination caused hanging in Tom Waghorn's shop.

a 15w amp with I'd guess an 8 or 1" speaker isn't ever gonna sound that big. EQ is entirely dependent on the sound of the amp to start with, probably best leaving it flat and trying to get the sound from your bass. Turning up the low on it will either make your amp sound farty, or mean you have to be very quiet.
(If you were to hook up an external 4 ohm cab, you'd get a small explosion and subsequent repair bill.)
From experience, it just might pop a fuse if you crank it. Plus if you want to run a 4 ohm cab, easy enough to disconnect the internal speaker so it jsut reuns the 4 ohm one. I quite like them as practice amps.

If you have a graphic, and turning up the bottom most one doesn't do much, probably don't turn it up any more, as its probably breaking your cab more than changing your sound.
VGC short scale Jedson - fairly Tele shaped - 75 earth pounds BIN. linky I'd probably have snaffed it for a laugh but I'm saving hard for something at t'other end of the spectrum.
If anyone fancys one of these, I have a fairly trashed one (possibly missing a tuner, lost somewhere in my parents house) I'll post you for £55. -
There is a chap locally who said he'd score me/mate of mine Marshall branded Vintage 30s as in the Mode 4 cabs for £55 each or so. Great for detuned guitar so I'd guess they'd cover you, especially if you high passed or something. They don't break up much by ear it would seem.

Damn, thought he'd topped himself or something when I saw the title.
The valve in the DBS is is a preamp valve. Even if t´wer blown/dead, you might still get a faint sound out of it, even a bit distorted. I reckon what you have here is a cooked output transformer. These amps have solid state power outputs. I remember talking to a guy about the head version of this amp awhile back and he had a similar problem (he had been using instrument cable to connect it to his cabs and unaware, ruined the output stage of the amp) Funnily enough, he said that was the second one he owned and was a replacement he got from the store when his first one -blew its output transformer! I´d be very surprised if it wasn´t that, or some dodgy wiring. I wouldn´t go messing with valve replacement unless you know 200% what your doing-it can cause serious problems!
Solid state amps, even with valve preamp, very rarely have output transformers, the Hellborg sig power amp is the only oe I know of. And using the wrong cable has trouble breaking SS amps, unless they break and short, and it overheats. You can break the power transformer though. There are probably fuses in it somewhere, check all of them. The valve is probably a 12AX7, but they don't break easily. Get it to a tech.

I have a 70s Orange PA120 I could be persuaded to part with by chunks of cash. See avatar. Just got back from a checkup. Don't like such well known names on my gear.

Speaker diameter doesn't tell you much about the properties of the speaker. Most octavers don't make stuff much lower than a bass will. If they do, most speaker will make their dissatisfaction clear via the medium of flatulent sounds.

Still see plenty of the Peavey TVX 4x10s about. Pair of them and an LH head is easily within budget, and should totally cover you.
-
Especially annoyed I missed this now, the practice I booked before the kind offers of a lift came in (cheers dudes) failed due to a drummer not showing up.
-
I robbed a set of Picato Ground wounds from JoeGarcia and stuck them on my tele bass. Totally innapropriate for everyhting I do, but they bring the dub.

They are very Doom. Not sure they are actually super good by todays standards. Is it the solid state one? If its Sunn and valve, you are pretty much on to a winner.
