Biggest Fattest Chunkiest widest Neck out there?
Mr. Foxen replied to AttitudeCastle's topic in Bass Guitars
I'd love to know if anyone on here's ever played a Wishbass. or bought one...
I have one. I oil finished it. Too tone deaf for fretless though. Edit: old-ass pic including it: -
Thanks! what about cleaning the frets and the neck?
Same, its all lacquered, frets just ned to get a nail behind the cloth to go along the edges of frets. Go to a model shop and get a track cleaner, for model railways, good for polishing frets.

And all these times we've been spelling it wrong
So you do that too, Oli? "Base", "Japnese" and "copie" as well... Jon.
I did do, it got to the point where I didn't want more basses in my house. All about the messaging pick up only ones and saying " will you unbolt the neck and post it for £20?" now. -

Definitely Wishbass for chunkiest neck. Is like a classical guitar neck scaled up, no truss rod. -

I spotted that. MAybe its a cunning plan to catch people that search 'giuter' and such to find poorly listed bargains and excitedly buy what is probably a mediocre bass. -
i didnt actually get on with the lomenzo, i was switching it on and off to find a balanced sound when engaged and the thing went kaputt!! brand new!! i took it back to the local music from whence it came, not really a happy camper, that kinda put me off...
Second one I've come across with a bust switch. Easy fix though.

If you have the luxury of a bit of time to choose, going modular with amp and cab is easier on the carrying and the modifying. Ashdown heads are cheap and there are plenty about, and you could probably do better on a cab, as the lower level Ashdowns aren't spectacular. A peavey 4x10 is heavy but sounds great.
-
Sure that much coil and magnet should sound beefy. Maaybe try a bunch of strat pickups instead? KEnt armstrong lipsticks are a bit expensive for that many, but should be others about. Are there interesting wiring options that could beef up the sound?
Thanks LOL i'm a girl and currently got a wrecked shoulder so probably couldn't lift it but there's 4 guys in the band so i'm not too worried about the weight! Will have a look at it! How heavy is the Firebass?
Very heavy. Heavier than some valve amps. Just about anythign else would be lighter.
-
How strong are you? The Firebass in for sale will totally sort you forever.

I think the Lomenzo Hyperdrive should the the new ODB3, it sounds loads better, plenty of options, good pedal, big though, not one for crowded pedalboards.

Celestion bass speakers - orange label v green label
Mr. Foxen replied to Bass Culture's topic in Amps and Cabs
I can't believe Alex hasn't chipped in on this one - must be too busy building speakers!
I'd hope so. Too much lecturing on the internet and not enough carpentry is that guys problem. See how Bill makes everyone do their own carpentry leaving him free to tell people stuff on the internet. Cunning chap. -

The answer to the question 'should I get a bigger amp?' is always yes. Until you have a big enough amp, then it is time to get more amps. Doom.
-
Its the DDT light right? Only time I had it on constantly was plugged into a blown, completely screwed cab. ONly occasionally heard it limiting the singla, should be an issue.

Had Winged C reccomended elswhere, for long lastingness, any one tried them?
-
Ampeg 8x10s don't do really low. MAybe a Aphex Xciter will do what you are after. Try one out, they seem a bit magic.

Whilst the Orange works, it needs an overhaul, so new valves are in order. I've fiddled with preamp valves a bunch, so will probably go Electro Harmonix or JJ, but know nothing about the power valves, sound wise. Its got beefy 70s transformers, so should be happy with most stuff. What I'm after is midrange growlness, I run seperate amps from my pickups, so loads of bottom is sorted, this is the amp my distortion and drive will be going through into an 8x10. What valves have you lot tried for snarling horrible bass tones. Tempted by these just for the colour, and not being expensive: What are 6CA7s like?

Exceeding driver Xmax, and multi-cab setup query
Mr. Foxen replied to LawrenceH's topic in Repairs and Technical
Isn't the answer to the first one xlim?
Xlim is expressed by Eminence as the lowest of four potential failure condition measurements: spider crashing on top plate;vVoice coil bottoming on back plate;vVoice coil coming out of gap above core; or the physical limitation of cone. A transducer exceeding the Xlim is certain to fail from one of these conditions. High pass filters, limiters, and enclosure modeling software programs are valuable tools in protecting your woofers from mechanical failure.
The second bit, if you have the cabs, try it and see, get a long cable and wander about, to se if there are bad cancellations. The people madly criticising mixing cabs and drivers and such are either people in pro audio that are very fussy on the minutiae of good sound, or people who have read their statements and taken it to mean the world will implode of you go against them, because they are experts. In most cases, you won't cause many real problems mixing cabs. Some stuff is going to upset totally modelled stuff, but is fine in practice, for example, if you do the highly reccomended pair of 2x10s stacked on their sides, the bottom one is radiating in half space cause of the floor, but the top one isn't, so they are mismatched. -
Out and out distortion probably not, but a little bit of grit for rocky stuff is what I am chasing with the option for a bit of extra boost on occasion. Aiming at the gritty sound Dave Meros gets with Spocks Beard and the rocky bass sound on the new Neal Morse triple live CD that has been getting a blasting in the car in recent days. Sort of have it with the BOD and the SVT Grit patch that Ped wrote and posted on the Line6 sharing section, but am looking to cut down the gear I am lugging and picked up a Blackstar HT Dual this afternoon (the DHA Dual EQ I borrowed from Johnnylager last week worked really well as well, but this afternoon was a mix of equal helpings of retail therapy, a good price and a pretty good version of what I am after when I tried it out). We shall see how it pans out.
Get some other valves (and some smaller fingers) and get swapping, the EHX is an improvement on the stock, but the Mullard I have was a notch above that.

If anyone wants one of those buckers, I'e got one going, model 1 went in mine. Does the trick.
