Bassbod gave me some Thomastics I think, they are a lighter purple than the Smiths, and funny guages. MAybe you could take a micrometer to them and if its .047 instead of 0.045 then it might be them.

If they're at the same pitch, the tension in the strings will be the same assuming you've got the same gague string as the one already on the guitar. I'm not saying through-body stringing doesn't affect the tone or resonance of an instrument*, it just doesn't affect string tension. * Albeit in a very minor way that doesn't compensate for a higher break angle at the bridge snapping strings.[/quote] Think this was already covered earlier in the thread, the affected factor is compliance. What you can feel under your fingers, which is the important bit. The string is not anchored at the the end of its speaking length as you have supposed when you applied physics here, it is free to move over the nut and the saddle, so when you bend it you are stretching the whole length up to its anchor point. Your physics is flaws by oversimplification.

Ken Smith strings are purple bound. The steel ones keep just the right bit of the bright end even when they are really old. Planning on getting a pile more at some point.

Shaftesbury was the import brand used by the Rose Morris music shop on Shaftesbury avenue. Sticks in the mind because I deal with people working for lloydstsb on that road most days.

I thought infinite baffle was open back, this is a seal cab. Fairly sure no sealed 2x12 will be able to make use of nearly all of 400w. Dunno what speakers though, old or not very expensive ones will probably be a better bet than expensive modern ones that want a ported cab. Or you could put a single modern uber 12 in and use the other hole as a port.

If all goes to plan, a very lovely lady friend of mine is picking my Slave 300 up from the factory this weekend. Gonna pair it up with the Orange PA head and Doom it up some.

Something in the crossover sparking would be my guess. Really is an ill informed guess though. Maybe have it out and put full range to the main driver? Guessing this is a tweeter equipped cab.

Has your tweeter equipped cab turned up yet? Might be all you need. Might look into different preamp valve too. Some are bassier and you might be losing some treble there, cause real bassists don't like treble. Or sling a pedal eq in the back of the rack case.

I've got a 1x18 in a w horn. It doesn't like being in small rooms. Lots of lovely bottom though, my favourite sort.

If you can find a Cube in bidget, that will sort you. You can get a surprisingly beasty Peavy on that budget too. All the Ashdowns I've tried have been too big for headphone sockets, but are good amps with rubbish resale value, win for you.

They run for a surprisingly long time on a 0.5 ohm load, before they trip. Ig you disconnect the trip and bridge it, it runs for a surprisingly long time before the power transformer melts. They are built tough.

I stick it in the cavities in my basses, not sure it helps, but got to be best place, with the electrickery. Put loads in a sweaty pop-punk players bass, cause his fluids were killing his active preamp.

Totally haven't got a citation for that at the moment though.
