Think they did bass and guitar heads that looked loads similar. Isn't the guitar head the star of Sleep's Dragonaut video?

I just had a pedalboard rejig, its mostly drive. I like the Blackstar HT Dual, although it loses some low, its comparable to the Bad Monkey in that respect. I have the two channel for drive and distortion, then I put a fuzz into it. Shiny new strings is a factor there. I just whipped mine out of the meths bath.
Because the low end market has been irrevocably damaged by all the chinese rubbish like "Shine" and "Lindo" thats been shipped over the last few years, and nobody is prepared to drop decent money on a higher grade Epiphone now, why spend 400 new when you can get a better LOOKING instrument for 99 quid on ebay, or a used Gibson for 600? The gap in equipment between serious players and beginners is widening, theres very little really good gear in the midrange anymore unless you look secondhand IMHO.
Thing is, the low end stuff is still great. I only buy second hand low end basses and stuff I buy accidentally on ebay whilst shilling for acquaintances.

I need more 8x10s.
The Nazis thought this was a good idea and developed some weapons called Sound Cannons. "The cannon consisted of large parabaloid reflectors, the final version of which had a diameter over 3m. The "dishes" were connected to a chamber composed of several sub-units firing tubes. The function of these tubes was to allow an admixture of methane and oxygen into the combustion chamber, where the two gases were ignited in a cyclical, continuous explosion. The length of the firing chamber itself was exactly a quarter of the wavelength of the sound waves produced by the on-going explosions. Each explosion initiated the next by producing a reflected, high-intensity shockwave, and so creating a very high amplitude sound beam. This high and strong note of unbearable intensity was emitted at pressures in excess of 1,000 milibars about 50m away. This level of pressure is above the limits that man can endure. At such a range, half a minute of exposure would be enough to be lethal. At longer ranges (about 229m), the effect would be excruciating and a soldier would be incapacitated for some considerable time afterwards."
Yes, I wouldn't say the Compact was Doom-worthy..on its own (heh heh..). I'm sure you have a plan? Have to sort out how/when to get it to you...
I can probably bus up one evening if you are passing town on the way somewhere, give me an excuse to play with your nice basses. And if you wanna play with pedals or something too. I'm trying out for some cheesy thing this weekend and might need a sensible cab.

There was a dude with some old 30" rickenbacker speakers on another bass forum, really old, and rated at 60w. http://www.rickresource.com/forum/viewtopi...10&t=388780

Heavier strings on the bass you have. Not convinced by the new BC Richs, my old Jap NJ sounds epic though. Actives seem to be the thing for the definition you are after.
Some first impressions on the Compact that recently arrived here..on tour. My usual gigging set is - GK combo (for small/quiet or lazy gigs) EA500 head with either 1 or 2 EA CXL1x10s or single CXL1x12. I also use an Acoustic Image Clarus..more on that in a bit. Basses are Fender jazz types..Alembic Epic or Clifton EUB..sometimes a Warwick Thumb. I really like the EA cabs, although they have a bit of an unforgiving mid emphasis when heard in isolation..and are not exactly light. The 10s are something like 32lbs and the 12 is 44lbs - not really heavy..but heavier than you'd think from their size. They also have co-ax tweeters which I turn down at least half way. They are also expensive. The Compact is very light for its size and the "slim but tall" shape makes it easy to move through doors or into cars etc. I thought one handle was a mistake..but it works. You just have to lift it and it all makes sense. For a lot of my work (jazzy bands at functions or restaurants, folky "acoustic"gigs) it is too big - even carrying it into a posh hotel they'll ask you to turn down before you've plugged it in. Despite that, I took it along to a duo (guitar/bass) restaurant gig, powered by the Clarus, with a Sansamp VT pedal as insurance. With a passive/flatwound jazz bass it was a good sound with a mere tweek of the amp's (limited) eq and a fantastic sound with the VT's eq and emulation. Much bigger low end than I normally use (CXL1x10) but perfectly controlable, even in a boomy acoustic. There are plenty of mids there, and note definition was easy - even at a far lower volume than it was ever intended for. It has all of the better characteristics of a "good old" 1x15. Plenty of warm sounding lows, and a pleasing traditional voice...but much better clarity and mid range. It doesn't do snappy highs..so no Marcus Miller...but there are enough highs there to sound good (in a 70's disco way..not even MM had tweeters before 1984?). It seems to be an easy load for my amps - maybe 10-15% more volume at the same settings compared to my EA cabs (completely unscientific observation, but noticable). The Compact is a great all-rounder - a perfect pub rock cab? Maybe not if you play very loud with a 4x10 and still want more...but very good for most gigs. The light weight is fantastic and the sound is great. For me, its too big for a lot of my gigs and I have got used to tweeters, even if I turn them off most of the time. A Midget T would do the job perfectly for a lot of my work...and a sub option would cover the louder stuff. Or a Big Baby?? Thanks to Alex for his work on these cabs - its a good time to be an ageing bass player! BB
Looking foward to getting my hands on it, got a unDoom rehearsal/tryout to go for.

Just a head or a cab too? If just a head, save up the £99 more and get an Hartke LH500, or scout a s/h one (unlikely). If a cab too or combo, I'd get a s/h Ashdown, the give you support even if warranty is past, and the prices are good.
Hi all, Just wondering, I've always been very conservative when it comes to strings and almost always just grab a set of Elites Stainless. However, I see 'Low tension' bandied around - how does this work when the string is at the same pitch? Does it feel weird? Any recommended makes to try out first? Cheers, James
Percieved tension, or compliance. Basically, stretchiness. Its a bit like 'low action'; might not be a good thing.

Damn, I thought that said 'More than Durst' and you were a Limp Bizkit tribute, I only read the rest planning on making fun of you.

I'm happy with mine, although on my parts bass it went on wonky and clashes with the other tuner. Need to lube your nut and flick it back and forth a bunch to get the tuning right first, then you are good to go. I did hear is disagrees with skinny necks as the tension change upsets the other strings, but not an issue on my club necks.

I have the DHA preamp on the way, which he mentioned is happy with piezos. Main thing is the sound, I'm hearing trebley, but dunno if that means fullrange (not having the roll off from winding capacitance) or lacking bass.
Traynor do a slightly cheaper alternative to the AD200. I think it's called the YBA200 but if I remember rightly they're a bugger to get hold of. Might be worth looking into though. Although it has to be said, you get what you pay for with meaty valve amps.
YBA200 is nice, but wouldn't call it a dirt monster, traded up to an Ampeg V4 for that. Its all light and nice, and not really valve growly.

Spotted this and considering knocking up a bass to make use of it. Do I need a special sort of ouput and is there a typical piezo sound? Is it comparable to a pickup position, or really full range and flat?
hi i have always daisy chained my two cabs but i was told that the speakers work better if connected seperately from the amp and not daisy chained is this the case. thanks
Shouldn't make much odds if its still series or still paralell (depends on connections). Only thing is short cable runs between amp and cab is most beneficial, so aim for that.

Help! something in my amp has melted!
yeah its second hand. haha sh*t. i just opened it up and theres a completly blackened component. i still have another one though so that'll do for now. but i guess i'll have to take it to an amp tech...
I'd open the other one and hoover the dust out. Newly posted amps are dodge, as they generally been through a temperature change, they get condensation in them, and if this soaks into teh dust, it can cause some issues. -
Also, I thought Sound Citys were well know for clean sounds. I've got a Pork Loin and a Big Muff to dirty things up, but I want a slightly gritty sound just from an amp, and the pedals to add some more drive.
Depends how far you turn them up. Plus they are a familiar layout that you can mod to taste.

Something with EL34s for distortion/drive sounds, not too much headroom. Anything old with the bright and normal channels. A sound City maybe, they would probably be an investment also.

Moving from US to UK - help ensuring I don't fry my Mesa amp
Mr. Foxen replied to patton63's topic in Amps and Cabs
How much power does it need? The little cheap maplins ones might not have enough juice, there is a bigger one laying around here the House of Bass could probably part with. Not worth it unless you are passing Bristol though. -
Though I admit I'd want to take the Squier logo off so I didn't suffer from other musicians pre-judging my tone. Alex
I get amdly angry when the first thing someone does when they hold my basses is turn it round to see the headstock logo. I meight make some up with either something rude or 'Better than Fender' on it. My two main basses both have Johnson necks, cheapy cheaps, still fine instruments.
