  1. Think they did bass and guitar heads that looked loads similar. Isn't the guitar head the star of Sleep's Dragonaut video?
  2. I just had a pedalboard rejig, its mostly drive. I like the Blackstar HT Dual, although it loses some low, its comparable to the Bad Monkey in that respect. I have the two channel for drive and distortion, then I put a fuzz into it. Shiny new strings is a factor there. I just whipped mine out of the meths bath.

I only buy second hand low end basses and stuff I buy accidentally on ebay whilst shilling for acquaintances.

  7. Heavier strings on the bass you have. Not convinced by the new BC Richs, my old Jap NJ sounds epic though. Actives seem to be the thing for the definition you are after.

The 10s are something like 32lbs and the 12 is 44lbs - not really heavy..but heavier than you'd think from their size. They also have co-ax tweeters which I turn down at least half way. They are also expensive. The Compact is very light for its size and the "slim but tall" shape makes it easy to move through doors or into cars etc. I thought one handle was a mistake..but it works. You just have to lift it and it all makes sense. For a lot of my work (jazzy bands at functions or restaurants, folky "acoustic"gigs) it is too big - even carrying it into a posh hotel they'll ask you to turn down before you've plugged it in. Despite that, I took it along to a duo (guitar/bass) restaurant gig, powered by the Clarus, with a Sansamp VT pedal as insurance. With a passive/flatwound jazz bass it was a good sound with a mere tweek of the amp's (limited) eq and a fantastic sound with the VT's eq and emulation. Much bigger low end than I normally use (CXL1x10) but perfectly controlable, even in a boomy acoustic. There are plenty of mids there, and note definition was easy - even at a far lower volume than it was ever intended for. It has all of the better characteristics of a "good old" 1x15. Plenty of warm sounding lows, and a pleasing traditional voice...but much better clarity and mid range. It doesn't do snappy highs..so no Marcus Miller...but there are enough highs there to sound good (in a 70's disco way..not even MM had tweeters before 1984?). It seems to be an easy load for my amps - maybe 10-15% more volume at the same settings compared to my EA cabs (completely unscientific observation, but noticable). The Compact is a great all-rounder - a perfect pub rock cab? Maybe not if you play very loud with a 4x10 and still want more...but very good for most gigs. The light weight is fantastic and the sound is great. For me, its too big for a lot of my gigs and I have got used to tweeters, even if I turn them off most of the time. A Midget T would do the job perfectly for a lot of my work...and a sub option would cover the louder stuff. Or a Big Baby??   9. Just a head or a cab too? If just a head, save up the £99 more and get an Hartke LH500, or scout a s/h one (unlikely). If a cab too or combo, I'd get a s/h Ashdown, the give you support even if warranty is past, and the prices are good.

  12. I'm happy with mine, although on my parts bass it went on wonky and clashes with the other tuner. Need to lube your nut and flick it back and forth a bunch to get the tuning right first, then you are good to go. I did hear is disagrees with skinny necks as the tension change upsets the other strings, but not an issue on my club necks.
  13. I have the DHA preamp on the way, which he mentioned is happy with piezos. Main thing is the sound, I'm hearing trebley, but dunno if that means fullrange (not having the roll off from winding capacitance) or lacking bass.

Only thing is short cable runs between amp and cab is most beneficial, so aim for that.

Newly posted amps are dodge, as they generally been through a temperature change, they get condensation in them, and if this soaks into teh dust, it can cause some issues.

Plus they are a familiar layout that you can mod to taste.
  20. Something with EL34s for distortion/drive sounds, not too much headroom. Anything old with the bright and normal channels. A sound City maybe, they would probably be an investment also.
  21. How much power does it need? The little cheap maplins ones might not have enough juice, there is a bigger one laying around here the House of Bass could probably part with. Not worth it unless you are passing Bristol though.
  22. Basswood is a hardwood, its from Lime trees, the sort that make your car manky. Agathis is a softwood though.

I meight make some up with either something rude or 'Better than Fender' on it. My two main basses both have Johnson necks, cheapy cheaps, still fine instruments.
