I've also decided not to sell the tubas and just reload then at some point when I have a bit spare money.
Ah man, actually, kinda glad you decided not to sell, just check the page and it occured a pair of those with an 8x10 as the 'coupler' would be an awesome doom rig.

Mr. Foxen replied to alexclaber's topic in Repairs and Technical
My grandfather just sent me a letter enclosing two fantastic old booklets: "Cabinet Handbook - G.A.Briggs" and "Five Speakers, how to make them - Hi-Fi News". Both date from 1962 and are a fascinating insight into early loudspeaker cabinet design. Most notable is how some of these early designs performed so much better in certain manners than the standard woofer+tweeter ported cabs that came to dominate hi-fi over the subsequent decades and only now are we seeing cabs (predominantly in the DIY sector) that combine the upsides of modern multi-way low distortion designs with the improved power response and sensitivity of these old large driver and horn cabs with unusual driver placement. Alex
If it makes you come up with something equivalent to the Vintage but toally wrong looking, then I'm totally gonna start saving. -
In two columns of 4 vertical speakers. Haha, I see at least one of Bassferret, Claber and BFM coming into this thread to suggest that. Anyway, I have an Ashdown 8x10 that is 4 ohm, and was thinking that if I put an Ampeg style thing into it, so I can run it as two 4x10s and can run both my lower powered valve heads that only do down to 8 ohms into it. So clean into my 18 for dub lows, with dirty and filthy on the other two. What sort of switch would I need, so I could still run as standard, and general thoughts on this plan?
This leads me to wonder whether I should offer a biwired version of the Big One, so you could use a big s/s amp to push the 15" woofer and then a little guitar valve head for the 6.5" mid. Could be quite scary sounding... Alex
Why would someone do that when they could have a pair of Vintages and a whole guitar stack? I've been imagination wanting to put neo 15s into one of those 2x15 + 2x10 isobaric ampegs because they were impractically heavy. Boxes with speakers on the front facing foward are boring unless there is loads of them.

Metal covers a pretty vast area of sounds. You'll want 2 amps then. A huge one with huge cabs for low, and a valve one with less power to drive the nuts off. This is THE TRVTH according to Doom.

I've just recorded with a Nexus 400w head into a GS412 and a 70s 120w head driving its nuts off into a Nexus 4x10. Totally beasty sound, dub lows and agressive clunk and huge growl in the sustain.
I don't usually join in these things because it's just down to taste but I must admit I am mystified by the enormity of U2s popularity. I listen carefully to try and hear what appeals to people and frankly can't. I think they've written a couple of good melodies but I'm stunned that that alone has sustained such popularity. There is not a great deal to commend them musically. To my mind they are The Police with none of the musiciancship or creative talent, so the jangling reverb guitar led trio sound without much to make it feature in my ears, and I'm willing to give everything a chance. I listened carefully on friday and could discern very little of what I would describe as good or talented or musical. Obviously millions hear something I don't. Or do they.......?
There are plenty of people who don't like music and don't know it. Music that fails to make any impression at all except maybe a recogniseable bit they can identify it from is all that is required.

Not figured exactly what is is yet, but fairly sure its a Laney L60, Klipp era as it has that logo on it. Looks like the one on a blurry youtube video. Also from another forum:
Messin with an 83 Ibanez Roadstar loaded with a HighOrder 8.3 A2. I jumpered a couple channels and added a .003 cap on 1 of the volumes. Also changed all the filter caps.... Stock otherwise
I think there is already a thread about warm pups. I would suspect this could be something quite bad, if you can get shocks through your amp earthing via your bass, this would indicate such a problem would allow current to pass through your bass, in this case, if its going via the pup, it would get warm as a thin copper coil is very much like a heating element. I'd get a new amp. If they do just smell plasticy, does the smell fade, when it isn't plugged in?

How much difference in tone will 60W give me compared to 25W
Mr. Foxen replied to markdavid's topic in Amps and Cabs
I think its more the speaker that the power stage. I modded my 30w amp so I could plug it into my 15" cab instead of its own speaker and it was fine. Plus you have a cab for when you want bigger for gigging. You can score a 15" cab for £60. -
From the pics I've looked at, it doesn't look through strung or with a oddly long bridge, which was the explaination I had in mind. Could either of those apply?

Was the Acoustic 408 bass cab isobaric then, or is it some other thing entirely? link
Now thats what Im talkin about!..Ive been thinking of pimpin my precision this way..now look wot you done!! What exactly does the mini switch do?
It belongs to Grandon Westlund, he's a super nice guy to deal with, so ask him, I'm not sure, I can only guess coil tap. I put together a p with asimilar theme, but budget and the switch on mine is mono/stereo, because I often am bumming rigs from headliners.

Do those ones run at 18v? If they'll take it, might be worth giving it a try, the extra headroom might get rid of the compresssion you might hear as 'unnatural' http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=39906

Maybe a heavier guage set of strings, especially on the G will help. They are the source of your sound. Do you know what you have at the moment? Heres a 1/4 Punder on a P in action: Looks like a standard bridge, not a badass at least. The hard picking and loose heavy strings probably helps. I have 1/4 pounders in my Mockingbird and they are more growly than thumpy, so there is more to it that just pup choice.
