Anyone Seen Buckthead play bass?
Mr. Foxen replied to Bass_In_Yer_Face's topic in General Discussion
He is ludicrously tall and definitely isn't Steve Vai. Think he was taught by Paul Gilbert. -
Speakers and power - explain this bit....
Mr. Foxen replied to john_the_bass's topic in Amps and Cabs
My band makes bad sounds. I blew up my cab. I touched a 9 volt battery arcross my speaker lead to check the speakers were in phases and all move in same direction. Oh noes, DC into my speakers making them suck inward. But then I touched it across the other way and they went outwards, so now its AC and they are all good. -
You're lucky that didn't fill the place with a nasty burning smell... I would seriously NOT recommend this for bass given the volume I'm sure you're playing at . If you want a decent Marshall guitar amp for top-end bass crunch, you'd be better with a JMP or JCM800 single-channel MV amp, they have less of a tendency to double as a smoke machine . (And they sound far better too.)
Wheres that issue come from? Didn't crank it that much, gain channel sounded aids, so ran it clean. Tried a vintage modern (if thats what you meant by MV) didn't think much of it tbh. Really only used the JCM600 cause I have it about. Have a 70s carlsbro 100w head thats more the part, but its also got the dodge power lead and isn't really mine to change.
Why not post a soundclip when you're done - nice to hear it...
Rocked it as is last night in practice, sounded great. Paired it with a Marshall JCM600 into a 4x10 for some top (make up for single guitarist). Filled the place with low end.
This was really good when it was working. Really well made too. Come on, someone take it out of our living room!
Might be pushing it a bit hard there. Good and well made considering it looks like a scruffy home made POS. Its big but very portable due to handles and wheels. Quite possible to take a run up and ride it like a shopping trolley (which is all its good for with a blown speaker).

So guitarist suggested I put more treble in my sound, and my cab responded by dying. Been replaced by my new vintage rig. So its now a huge non-functioning box sat around the place. Its a home made job, decent caster handle and a round grill over the front, which I would guess would be its value. If it doesn't go complete I'll strip these bits for my other cab, but with a new speaker, it will be functional again. Pickup in Stokes Croft, Bristol.

Marshall 'VALVE' amp... rare he reckons!
Mr. Foxen replied to warwickhunt's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Mines there too actually. Ha. -
Did you check out the Christian Rock mosh pit (points for reference spotting)? Pretty damn sure getting a bunch of people together to make music for a reason other than liking music is a very good thing, how else would you find out that you love making music with other poeple. That Lydia on youtube with the playing some Marcus Miller song with the bouncy Fender top is from a really Christian family, thats what being brought up singing and loving music can do for you. Not really sure why I know that actually.

I'm down the road from you in Stokes Croft, I can do it. Right next door to the Croft.

Shall we play match the comment to the basschatter. I can see Bassassins. -
Don't think its blown, just figured (on another's advice) that modern driver will like low A much better, it did seem to be farting out some, but I suspect it would be very loud given some distance at that point. Ain't pushed it again since I took everything apart and tightened it all. Some of the bolts were kinda loose. Loads of wadding in there. is there some property like you need to be half the wavelenngth away fromthe cab for the sound to resolve properly? Its definitely louder further away. Didn't spot a power rating, the cab says 150 watt (the head actually says 130RMS, guess he read wrong thing when listing), but that doesn't relate if driver is replacement.
It's for reactance annulling.
Just read this article (in a 1920s raddio announcer voice) on that: Reactance anulling That means it even out the responce right? This stuff is heading to more complicated than I need to know, but I'm an enquiring sort of guy. All back together now. My Dad restores classic cars, I can see the paralells, luckily, there is less legislation governing speakers and how they are made.
-
Right, got it apart. Speaker is a Cetec Gauss 8142. Its very vaned. Occurred to me that the speaker is effectively in a very small enclosure of its own, does that limit excusrsion due to air pressue difference? Making it less likely to break but limiting it? If I put a tougher modern speaker in would there be an advantage to porting it somehow?

Eyin this: Eminence Bit less high response and bit more sensitve, not much more expensive and in stock copared to Beyma. Plan is to be running two rigs, one with smaller speakers (in theory my 4x10 or my guitar 4x12, in practice other bands borrowed bass rig), so highs ain't such an issue. Gonna go make a mess trying to take this apart now... Edit: Bunch of unscrewing later and the center section is still riginly in there. given it a tug, doesn't seemlike paint adhesion.
Looks like an old EV Eliminator copy to me. Have a look here: http://members.aol.com/xxbase80a/eliminator/box.html Click on Zeichnung for the drawing. Klappe is the hatch. No guarantee, of course.
Not quite same proportions, and there ain't no hatch there. I know the AC ones had a hatch in the back so you could at least see front of speaker. Housemate has paved living room with pedals so can't really enact plan right now.
you don't hear people talking about getting that sweet transistor tone from valves.
That's basically cause solid state stuff is relatively clean, so you don't hear transistors, you just hear whats going in, louder. Point about the 'wow thats cool' vs. 'bin it and buy a modern rig' is that I have it and I am going to do things with it and am looking to guidance as to the best way to go about it. I have bunches of time to think as I need to save some pennies. Current challenge is how to get at the speaker. There is no hatch anywhere, reckon the whole middle bit comes out. Plan is detach the wire I can see, lay whole thing on its front, undo screws on the sides and lift the shell off. Sound like the way?

Right, now two experty sorts are having some discussion on the matter, this is ideal for me learning stuff. Can fairly safely suppose this cab is a clone of the Acoustic Corporation 361, so here are its dimensions: Anyone have any advice on fitting side handles?
