Credit Crunch, recession - what will it mean for us?
Mr. Foxen replied to KevB's topic in General Discussion
Thus far its meant tht food is slightly more expensive (inflation does that anyway) and second hand music gear is cheaper. Bearing in mind the relative amounts I spend on each, been on a winner so far. Course, HSBC ending my student overdraft has made me very poor, but I refuse to blame that on the economic trouble, as most of the actual economic trouble is being cause by peoples reaction to hearing there is such trouble. As for gigging peoples inclination to stay in will affect pubs, they'll stay in and watch tv which will tell them how terrible the economy is and be even more inclined to stay in, pubs will suffer and the economy declines. Great. Play happy tunes about how the good times are coming. -
Sold various things anyone else would have binned long ago to Jon, tuners (don't let the name fool you) and knobs. Always been easy to deal with. Also advises me on japcrap I spot.

Got a call from my housemate who was doing sound at the venue next door saying the bands bass was malfunctioning so could I take a look. Said 'Sure', and went over to check it out, was having an occasional intermittant volume loss. It was an active P J special or something, Mexican, 3 band EQ, sparkle blue with the gold plastic scratchplate. They are a pop/ska punk band (Mike TV, formerly Pickled Dick, check them out if you like that sorta stuff), and told me their bassist is kinda sweaty, which might not be helping. Anyway, took it home and took the scratchplate off, having to dig the rust out of the screws forst, found there was enough sweat under there that it pooled. The foil shielding had dissolved into white powder and it smelt like an arm pit. Aside from that the electrics were apparently fine, so sprayed servisol in the pots, wiped off the sweat, cleaned the jack that was a bit manky and put it back together with a few packets of that silica gel stuff inside. Recon that will sort it? Any other suggestions, I got their email address so I can be their e-basstech. Suggested they get a bass with rear loaded controls.

I get bored of hearing the same track loads of times generally, exceptions are Bolt Thrower, I've been listening to them solidly for several weeks, and all their albums are essentially the same. Any, point being radio gets annoying super rapid when I am forced to listen to it, another TV free household here too, so music comes from the internet, I'm a member of a couple of music forums, which for fan sites, have people with a very broad range of taste, so I am pointed in the direction of some quality stuff. Of those things I check out, theres very little I'd bother listening to again. Whats most annoying is when people reccomend me bands because they sound the same as another band I like. Defeats the point of listening to a different band.

My mockingbird shows signs of various button placement experiments, currently its on the end of the neck pocket end: Balances fine, got a suedy sticky strap though, although to be honest, when I'm actually playing it is mostly being waved about in front of my cabs and feeding back.
You might want to try camping shops..they do 3 legged foldaway stools...very light too. But alas no padding, comfortable though...I use one when I am camping out at festivals to play my guitar with.
Drummer uses one of those to put his sticks on. He was oddly excited about it; 'Check out my new fishing stool, great isn't it?'.

Regretting not selling the ones I don't play now the market is screwed.

The end bit was ok where it started to be a tune I recognise.
Just out of interest, is that a non-standard mains plug coming out of the back?
I'd guess its either hard wired or one of those dodge oldschool 3 pin bakelite jobs that crumble into dust when you unplug them, leaving you with a handful of wires and metal. Gonna switch that out. Got one of those 'on long term loan' heads with one that I can't switch.

Bit more to it than price. Safe bet is OBBM a guy who posts here, makes leads, decide what you want and you'll have the best sort of lead, in the length you ask for, can be confident others aren't gonna be better.

Dunno if this is a lucky score or an extra wardrobe. Figuring its a lot like a 18" folded horn a lá Acoustic 361. Think the 150W is wrong from the valves I can see. Anyone know anything about these? Or feel the urge to pick it up and drive it to my practice space. Traben Phoenix WITHDRAWN WITHDRAWN I'M KEEPING THE BUGGER!
Mr. Foxen replied to BassJase's topic in Basses For Sale
I'm currently based in Enfield, North London, but i'm always going to both Bristol and Norfolk, so anywhere between any of those would be fine for me to possibly deliver. I might be interested in the Peavey, but in all honesty I already have a Peavey International 5-string. The pickups are active, but they're not the highest output i've ever heard, but still waaaay louder than any passive i've heard. Anyone else possibly interested.....?
I'm in central Bristol, so that would be good. How do you find the Peavey? I like mine, except for the 5 stringess, the thin neck makes me happy in its case, whereas I don't get on with the 4 string Peavey skinny necks. Maybe defret it to have a pair? -
Good Dedicated to my band (guess thats the main reason I'm in the band) Do all my own instrument setting up, and that of guitarist Good finger technique (totally not needed in my band) Never found a bass neck profile that I couldn't swap for one I liked more Bad Dreadful at playing by ear Can't count Can't keep time Play tapping and trills in quiet bits of practice Dial all the high end out of my sound (I like it, but rest of band complain) Play horrible looking basses that look like I found them in a skip (cause I have) Change basses and entire pedal board every practice Forget how the song goes and where the notes are and where I'm supposed to be playing Tune my bass half a step out and not notice during the part I played so many times its in muscle memory, then forget how it goes whilst playing live Can't read music Talk about basses all the time Tell people their beloved vintage instruments are planks of wood and demonstrate by taking it apart Call my bandmates pricks constantly Press for more drone parts in songs so I can feed back and pose Stroke my nipples whenever someone gives post gig compliments Trying to learn the 'Murderface Solo' Been listening to nothing but Bolt Thrower for the last 3 weeks Spend all my money on more cheap basses and have totally crap cabs and an unsuitable amp

The Dimarzio Will Power is narrower spaced apparently, but also expensive. Have seen the pup from the cheaper Attitude going on ebay too, looks like a giant Bill lawrence bar humbucker.
-
Like the Dimarzio (?) pickups in my bass, but they squeal with the drive and treble cranked. Guessing this is cause they are not potted. How hard is it to get done to cure this? Reccomendation on who should be able to do it?
Im using a Traben Phoenix 4-string. im currently using DR strings. im confused. can someone please suggest what i should do? through body or through bridge? (Considering that it has a MONSTER bridge which has a whole lot of bridge-body contact)
Since its established it may or may not be different, try and see which you like. Top two through and bottom two back strung could work. Would make less odds with the chunky bridge I'd guess. Make sure strings are long enough to string through before you kink them.

Other plusses of bidding early is not doing that thing where you forget to bid. And not doing that thing where your connection hangs or your PC crashes at the last moment. But one of my favourites is the knowing when someone has outbid you and knowing that cash is free to be played with elsewhere.

I didn't realise he played bass !!!!! Lookalikes
I always wait till the last second that way I don't get in a bidding war and therefore push the price up.
This is why I enter my max bid early. Ebay bids for you up to your max, so if you were to do this, you'd still have to bid just as much in order to win, without the time to reflect upon what the item is really worth. I think a lot of people don't realise Ebay bids for you up to your max, as I've seen people bid 8 times in the last few minutes, being outbid by a pound each time by my earlier max. Only problem is it leaves you open to shill bidding, but I just bid the amount I want to spend, they can't shill it higher than that, the only second chance offer I've had was a ridiculous bargain anyway. The last minute bidding war is where people spend silly money on Ebay, buying items for over their value as they get overexcited. Auction sniper seems especially pointless, If I have the same amount of money to spend on the item, I win because my bid is higher by the auction sniper fee, no matter how close to the last second you bid goes in, if you bid more than me, you win regardless of when you bid.
-
Winner is who bids most first, so they are only gonna beat you if they bid more than you. I always bid as early as I decide how much I'm willing to spend. Which is rarely very much. I've snagged quite a few nice things, and for silly low bids. Scored a P copy with EMGs in it for a very low bid. You can only get lucky if you chance it.
