Recieved my Jazz control plate, from the royal mail depot, today. Posted quickly, shame about the RM. Very pleased with it.

With one guitarist who generally plays facing the side wall and the singer wandering about down the front, lastgig I found myself pretty much alone in the middle of the stage. Self concious hit me a bit, fudged some easy parts. Turned into a total poser for the drone parts, holding my bass up so it feeds back though.

Yep, sounded like that when I started tuning down to A, took a bit of tinkering to get any definition. Got there in the end, all learnin innit?

Top load bridge and tapered strings solves the bridge problem. Tuning that low is never going to be that fun. New nut cut higher maybe?

Mickleburgh tried to sell me a guitar lead when I asked for a speaker lead cause 'it would be fine.' Unimpressed. Drumbank are definitely more helpful and I've made most of my purchases there. I wouldn't listen to much Rikkaxxe Rich says, he's pretty annoying and up himself.

I've got a 5 string version and its great, but 5 strings is too many. Wanna swap? Got lots of potential with the big vavity and 4 knob holes, crying out for active fun.

And the top of semi acoustics is often spruce laminate, so softwood and ply. Probably a horses for courses thing. Stability, durability and workability I suspect are the most important characteristics, second only to availability (and therefore price). Pretty sure thats why Leo Fender used alder and ash. I always read 'laminated hardwood construction' as plywood.

solder a length of wire to a spoon, and a crocodile clip to the other end of the wire, clip the wire to your bridge and put the spoon in your waistband. That way you are always touching the bridge.

I cranked the presence on my sansamp, played near the bridge, and conciously tried to use more nails when a pick sound was demanded. Gave the necessary bite, but then we dropped that part anyway.

You can't have two guitars made of the same wood, only the same species. Also, where does it stop becomeing a topwood, bodywood and accent layer and become plywood?

I'd be inclined to agree it makes less difference than anyone thinks. Some woods are certainly deader when you feel them vibrating. Harware, and neck joint have far more effect. No-one pimps a plywood instrument though, so they never really appreciate it. I through strung and heavey bridged my plywood first bass, made a hell of a difference. Not ebough to make me play it over my pimped second, cheap by solid wood bass though.

Reckon teak oil would work? It darkens wood you finish with it, dunno how it works though.

I have some pointy basses, they have to be second hand, with no finish on the points, can't be dealing with having done the damage myself. Wish my P and J copies were more beat up though. Sdaly, don't gig them, so it isn't happening. My cabs and amp are proper beat up, always spend the money on bass and pedals, large cabs only got important recently.

Its easy to kill sustain, hard to increase it without bass modding.

I get the impression that the recomendation to have more amp power that cab power is so you hear the speakers farting out (which is bad but not too fatal, and quickly remedied) before your run your amp into clipping and put a square wave dc current into your speakers which will just make them die right away without necessarilly making a prolonged nasty noise. The explanation of the 'run your amp into clipping and put a square wave dc current ' bit you may want is the reason why people just say 'have more power in your amp'. Course, that might not be the reason at all.

Eh?[/quote] That isn't an option, drummer is always about to batter some part of his kit. If you take a guitar stand with you to a gig, make sure you take one home with you after a gig.

If you get a guitar for yourself, get one that looks totally innapropriate for your band (my guitarists generally describe mine as 'gay'). That way its less likely they will start borrowing them and making you lug them to and from practice on their behalf. And les likely to start playing 'Come as you are' in the corner of your living room.
