1. What sorta bass are you looking for? I have a Peavey 5er that is kinda not being used, and I was after something tele bass shaped.
2. If you get a guitar for yourself, get one that looks totally innapropriate for your band (my guitarists generally describe mine as 'gay'). That way its less likely they will start borrowing them and making you lug them to and from practice on their behalf. And les likely to start playing 'Come as you are' in the corner of your living room.
3. Had a look on ebay and not spotting equivalents, and my IDing ability is limited. I havea 70s Laney 4x12 and a 60/70 dirty white Fender 2x12. Not so much looking for prices as much as where to go about finding them. Or gimme ballparks.
4.
Interestingly he reckons by putting a note in the case saying "thanks for the loan buddy" he can get around the import/vat issues that arise when sending stuff from outside the EC. At some point they will twig as he had a huge loan collection............
"No scammers. P.S. I will help you scam the tax man."
5. Think these are alder bodied ather than maple. Would weigh a ton. Might be wrong though, never owned one.
6.
Only downside that springs to mind is that the wrappings on the head end of the string are now maybe an inch closer to the nut - and maybe close enough to touch it.
Like most problems in this world, that can be cured with a blade and fire.
7. I'm sure I router attachement jb on a dremmel would be ideal. I've got one for the purpose, not tried yet though. Oli
8. I have a bit of experience with going down that low on a 4 string. We tune down to A. I use an 86 NJ series mockingbird with stock Dimarzios, hex polepiece jobs. I had some strings made by newtone with a .145 Low string, and had them all taper wound so the thickness wouldn't kill the sustain, I think thats pretty important. I like high string tension, so that should cheefully drop another tone and be happy. Bigger problem once I'd done that (am experience bass tinkerer, generally know how to get the sound I want there) was amplifying that low note. Generally stuff ain't made to cope so well down there. I use a very large ported 15" cab and sometimes another one, and a 4x10, along with a Firebass head running at 475w, and that is still generally going flat out to cope with guitarists 5150 stack. Hit me up on msn or something if you want to have a long in depth on doom bass.
9. All depends on the neck as to fittings, some will just fit right away, others will need bit of sanding or routing or shimming. The tuner holes are consistent and measurable, neck pocket less so. Any luthier would be able to fit it. Go right to a luthier rather than a shop that will likely farm it out and take a cut.
10. Depending on how much work you wanna do to make it, those wood recovery places sometimes have purpleheart decking and such you could use, also, some railway sleepers were rosewood.
11. I lugged my old Carlsbro valve head back from home and had a tinker with the crossover on my Firebass head. Sounded pretty damn good, but thats a lot of stuff to be shifting, running 2 15s off the Firebass for the lows and a 4x10 from the Carlsbro. Sounded mint, not practical in the slightest.
12. Ebay is doing well, if I click your name and 'items for sale' you have nothing at all.
13. If you are passing by Bristol at some point, I have a strong desire to own this.
14. I've got a peavey 1x15 and an OHM GA140 head you could have for £150, would be a good start. Its currently my practice rig till Iget my Ashdown combo back.
15.
I'm pretty sure it doesn't ya know, if it expanded and contracted that much i'm pretty sure a plane flying from glasgow to dubai would be a bit forked! Yeah it expands and contracts a bit in heat, but not a lot, and it has to be a lot of heat, i'm sure it would be a lot more stable than wood.
Hhm, planes do expand and contract bunches, but they are all made of same stuff. Mostly its the dead fast ones that heat up due to air friction, if you looked close ar a Blackbird, its all wrickly. Doesn't happen so much to airliners. Kramers are generally happy enough, so you should really be fine. Sort of temperatures that will make any odds would be detrimental to your health.
16.
How does this sound? And what would it take to get the other pickup working? I am very much a beginner, but for that price this could be worth having waiting for a day when i'm ready for it. Does it sound and play like your usual run of the mill 6 string electric bass, and also realisticly will the lack of a truss rod effect the neck on the future? Jesus (Deano)
Speaking for mine. The neck is plenty thick enough to be happy.
17. think something to consider about the 'good bass into rubbish amp' thing is that basses are very much simpler than amps, so a £100 bass is still going to be a few chunks of wood, pickups, strings, screws, whereas and amp is all sorts of FETs and valves and transformers and classes, and speakers, ports, tweeters and all sorts.
18. Kinda think you fudged up the poll a bit with the two options. Voted for expensive amp, need lots of headroom, and pretty happy with my cheapy basses, much better at tinkering with them to get what I want out of them.
19. I have a suspicion I'mone of those people in a sense. I've spent lots of time telling people about gear stuff, but it is generally cause they ask, only a coupla hours ago my guitarist asked about how to get an atmospheric sound in acoustic guitar parts, was chatting away about reverb and subtle chorus for a while till I realised, 'Wait a minute, I've never recorded acoustic guitar parts or used chorus or reverb in my life.'. Pretty sure I was right anyway.
20. Some compression makes things much easier if you are doing that. All our stuff is written in Audacity. Lots of distortion plug ins.
21. If that was local I'd probably have to score it, even though theres no way I'd be able to play a fretless 6er. If you are passing Bristol I'd cheerfully swap for my Peavey 5er.
22. I've found my TU2 is happy with my low A, no prob there. I find the mute pretty damn useful also.
23. Played my first gig on Tuesday supporting Asva. Went pretty well, put a mic at the back of the room, on listening back am painfully aware of my fluffs. Sound was great, mic'd up and DI from my sansamp, as knew the sound guy (props to Joe Garcia). People stayed for the whole set, clapped at the end, I didn't freak out. Best part was we went and found the promoter to see if we got anything for playing and he gave us a stick of gum and told us not to chew it all at once. Then I had to carry my whole rig home by foot (1x15", 4x10, Firebass head).
24.
hmm, a steel finger board sounds good... but how do you think i could attach it to the neck? glue?
Put screws as dot markers. Also, the machine heads I have are fake Fender types, bit big for that purpose.
25.
you can't polish a t*rd!
However you can paint it.
