  1. I picked up a Johnson P on ebay for around £70, chunky necks on them tohugh. £30 for a less flimsy bridge or a nicer pickup. The one in it was bit wooly but plenty of output. Trade it and gumtree is the place to be.
  2. Its just a single P style pup, volume and tone. And its only one half that does it, mostly when playing, its a click when you touch the pole. Since there ar only two wires comin out of the pickup, if one wasn't connected, it just wouldn't work, and why would one half be different to the other?. Gonna just have to tape over them for the moment.

WITH a very light overdrive.[/quote] Light strings aren't really an option when downtuned to A. The marshall 2x15 was borrowed from the practice space, am going to make sure I get 10s next time of take my 4x10 with me, and add another cab. I was using my stereo bass with one channel clean into the sansamp and one through both valves in my DHA, and a wah, which is what was doing all the feedback stuff that was cut out of this recording (15 minutes is too long for myspace).
  6. No idea which section to put this in, might fit in all of the gear and technique ones at once. Got a lot of dense guitar going on, and having some trouble making myself heard, check new recording posted up on myspace on sig. This wasn't aided by the lame borrowed marshall 2x15 cab that just wasn't dealing with the downtuning. Any tips, gear or technique or eq setting wise? You might hear where I start playing near the bridge and use a bit more nail to get some clank at one point, but that not really the sort of sound I'm after.

  8. I've just put a 1/4 pounder (p style) in a bass, all works fine, but on one half I get a hum when I touch the polepieces, but not on the other hald, is some sort of shield or earth disconnected? It also hums a bit through the amp, but not loads.
  9. If you are getting rattle from hitting strings hard, heavier strings will help too.
  10. I'm doing something like that at the moment, using stereo wired bass and a blend cause I can't afford biamped rig yet. Downtuned to A, snarling dogs wah with built in overdrive intodual valve DHA pedal blended with clean into a sansamp (my sound in a backpack is current plan, due to amp borrowing). Use the wah on overdrive to do huge intro feedback, then control the generally full on to huge lows sound using volumes on the bass. Putting headstock on cab for feedback is also a recurring theme.

  17. One is a standard mono with both pups going to it, one is a stereo one with pups split. Stereo wiring is awesome.

  22. Brass will change your open string sound a bit in theory, and graphtec is very brittle, so you have to make sure you file it to just the right size, otherwise you'll have same problem again.
  23. One of my basses was hung in a shop window for ages, it made the rosewood go very pale and the red paint to go pink. Not recomended.
  24. I've got a full set of hardware for a Westone I stripped to restore, its all tatty and stuff, shoot me a pm, I'm tempted to let it all for and start from scratch with just the body (the neck needs a new fingerboard).
  25. If you put in a block under the whole neck pocket, then the contact area should be sthe same as before, which would make no noticeable difference in sustain. In addition, many stock basses will come with a shim in anyway. Get some numbers on how much sustain it has with and without the shim.
