  1. If it is an Orange terror, no probs with having no load. The impedance selector is a fudge. Should be noted it isn't the class that causes things to be upset by no load, its the use of an output transformers, you could make a class D amp with an OT, and one with valves, and it would be upset by no load, ditto with solid state amps with output transformers.

The ones I have to deal with most are the buy all the gear some dead guy they listen to exclusively used, barely ever play, never listen to themselves (because that wouldn't be listening to the dead guy). Kind of a cult of personality, except instead of a personality, they have vintage gear. But their money spends as well as anyone elses. Interestingly, you get similar, but are actually keen on the music, but still gear obsessed, and they tend to be penniless. The other easily spotted classics are the ironic band t-shirt wearers, who have no clue about the associated music.

The string motion produces the sound and the motion is a product of a bunch of factors, the simplification is in flexibility, the round windings damp the strings less than flat windings that are closer together. Really, for the purpose a pickup acts like a microphone, just instead of reacting to air disturbance from the string motion, it is reaction to magnetic field disturbance. Maybe picture a string of round beads vs a string of flat discs, if they are all packed tight, the round beads will tend to bend easier than the discs, that damps the higher frequencies.

  9. Depends if you like a massive notch where the output from the speaker and from the scoop are out of phase. Gives that loud and 'bassy' but messy sounding thing There was a write up here: http://www.speakerplans.com/index.php?id=faq12 but the throw thing is a bit dodge, probably the room effects cutting out the bit where it does work, and the in build scoop taking out the bit where you can hear it closer.
  10. Thing is, if matching four numbers on a chart with some dials is scary, messing with glass things connected to a few hundred volts should be terrifying. Plus there'll be a whole bunch of good valves binned when the microprocessor misidentifies one and the user isn't sharp enough to spot the anomalous readings, or just because there is dirt in the socket. Actually, its pretty standard for Orange amps to use only one half of one of the pre valves, so you can cheerfully use one that has failed on one side.

  12. A DI that has the sound you want would be ideal, Sansamp if that is your sort of thing. Ground lift is to deal with ground loop issues, only to be used if there is such an issue.
  13. Don't think the B500dr is a valve one. Something is wrong though. Could be the cab. What noise is it making that says you can't turn it up more?

  16. How much heat are we talking? Use a soldering iron on frets to get them out, and the wood is happy enough.
  17. Ha, that Mullard doesn't look like any I've ever seen. Plus, ECC83 has a gain factor of 100, so 7, 8 or 9 means they've got their own made up scale. The stuff about having to replace an entire set if you break 1 valve is wrong, only applies if you are cheaps out by only having one bias adjuster (or none). In fact, this guy has literally no idea what he is talking about. This valve tester is more expensive than an old one that does a full range of valves, and tests bunches more stuff. Here is my stylin one: I have a couple of new ones that test more stuff now too. Its missing microphonics test and intermittent faults (those involve giving it a knock, which is incorporated into the instructions on my testers)
  18. Cheap stuff they don't bother. Plenty do bother. One of the least interesting jobs I had to do at the hifi factory was weighing out the stuffing for speaker boxes, controlled amount goes in. Lined cabs give a bit more midrange transparency, that is only a good thing if you like the sound of the rest of the gear and player attached to it. This is why guitarists tend to prefer unlined cabs.

I switched to elixirs mostly because when I started playing high chordy stuff, the treble needed made for horrible string squeaks when you finger runs against a string, the slippery sorts that out. But the fact they stay bright for ages is a pretty significant advantage too. Could do with heavier guages though, I like heacy strings anyway, and use a detuner, so a 115 bottom would be better for me.
  20. Looks like the bridge is shaped for intonation. Works on acoustic guitars. Pretty Wishbass styley.
  21. V30s in a bigish cab, and a valve guitar head. The V30s are middly and loud, the guitar head will high pass the sound so won't wreck speakers. 4x12s were meant to be bass cabs anyway. Distortion sounds more guitary and 'right' through guitar type speakers. But if the volume with band is dropping, then something is breaking. Isobaric 2x12 means 1x12 comparative output, since one of the 12s isn't contributing to output.
  23. How are you eqing? The baked in mid scoop of the tone stack plus the dodge mid from the isobaric cab might be combining to lose you key cutting frequencies. Plus a 1x12 isn't much to keep up with a band, especially when half the power fed to it is wasted in not making sound.
