1. Oh yeah, and a bunch of the tone is in the power section, so you need a DI that goes after the output, and a cab or inductive dummy load.
 2. See if you can have the back off and see what they are made of. Curious as to if they are a pair I saw up for sale before. Matamp have changed lines pretty often with cabs.
 3. Open it up and follow the wires round, and get a meter on each speaker.
 4. For Ampeg, new one under guarantee, all good. S/H, budget for a service when buying, they are a giant pain to work on when they start going wrong.
 5.
On this I have to say that's absolutely untrue. Every amp I've ever bench-tested could deliver a higher voltage swing into an open circuit than with a load connected.
How exactly do you measure voltage across an open circuit?
 6.
Why? Because he didn't mention instantaneous power. As written it amounts to perpetual motion.
Didn't specify anything. Output watt ratings are pretty much meaningless anyway, so it is fully valid to be able to have a rating above the consumption, because amplifier output isn't like mains output.
 7. Power demands in music aren't constant, and capacitors are cheap.
 8. Big transformers for bottom. The higher bit is a bit more interesting, C-cores are used in super duper mic stuff, apparently due to better high end performance, but I don't know if the advantage is too high for audio. Some of my very fancy amps have C-cores though, more exciting than the Partridge ones that are excellent but I have tons of.
 9.
Valves were (and still are...) used at RF transmitter frequencies, and radar. There is nothing inherently 'slow' about valves, at least in anything like audio frequencies. Cite your sources, please..?

fact.
10.
PLEASE DO NOT BID IF YOU HAVNT GOT THE MONEY TO PAY FOR THIS ITEM...I WILL LEAVE BAD FEED BACK AND CALL YOU A WORD THAT SOUNDS A LOT LIKE "PETROL-TANKER"
Bet he won't. All seems fair really, you have to deal with a lot of numpties selling on ebay. recently had a guy open a case against me because shipping to Europe was 50p extra, and a guy saying my price for a 60s amp was too high because he could get a new one cheaper.
 11. You have a Barefaced cab. Introduce a weight limit per band member based on the weight of all yours.
 12.
That is a scientific fact.
Citation.
 13.
valves are slower than transistors
Which bit is slower? I like SS in the rectifier stage.
 14.
Could be a sign they are incredibly narrow minded as well.
Not quite following the logic there?
 15. When someone uses one amp for 30 years, that's a good sign they know what a good sounding amp for them is. If they are changing it all the time, either they want a broad range of experience to draw upon, or they just can't get a good tone.
 16.
He was just talking about how it sounded to his ear. That is a valid basis and whether he's been inside it is irrelevant.

Reliability and fixability matters, however much you like the sound it makes, doesn't count if it isn't making sound.
17.
Are you talking about me in the highligjted section? Did all of BC wake up on the wrong side today? My Ampeg is a B-15 reissue, not a POS in my mind but there you go...
That's the thing. How much amp work is that opinion based on? Ever been inside it? Got gutshots from when you did? Opinions don't gain validity without basis.
 18.
If for you an SVT 2 pro plus what ever bass and cabs you use is sonic perfection to you, that's all that matters.
Reliability and fixability matters, however much you like the sound it makes, doesn't count if it isn't making sound.
Don't think oli owns an ampeg, he owns lots of amps with proper iron and non sag based power supplys though.
I used to own an ampeg, it would have been the worst amp I ever owned, except I have one that is 100v line out only which ranks it as slightly more useless on a potential basis, although it would have been cheaper to have converted than to have the Ampeg brought up to standard. Massively annoys me when people pick a boutique example of one thing and a cheaply made nasty POS for the other and think it makes a valid comparison.
 19.
You are cordially invited over to have a test run on my Aguilar DB-680 + Lab1000 + Bergantino AE410 rig. Maybe it sucks, but to my ears it blows my all valve Ampeg out of the water easily in terms of creamy goodness.
I would say that would be more to do with Ampegs being seriously badly made devices. I've not been into an Aguilar amp, but I've heard good things.
 20.
Preamp - yes tubes are definitely a good thing. Power amp - not so much a necessity. IMO, YMMV and so on.
Power amp valves are where all the goodness is for bass.
A full on bass valve amp has lots of fuzzy goodness but can't suddenly be set to modern clean.
Properly engineered to be so, a full valve amp can be very clean. When people could be bothered to engineer them to be so, cab's weren't so much though.
 21. I look for ability to turn up, owning their own gear and knowing how to use it (before I let them borrow mine), and willing to drive me places since that is my major failing.
 22.
Ohh, that sounds messy and I don't want to get blood on my club. It's a nightmare to get off
Could probably borrow this guy's sander: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/177541-hahaha/
 23. Preamp valve do the grit thing. Power valves do the girth thing, which is in a certain sort of compression that retains dynamics, and some different sort of harmonic distortion, which sounds a bit like what you get from an Aphex Exciter with Big Bottom, and makes everything more massive sounding.
 24.
Last time I used a 100 watt (solid state) amp at a gig, it was inaudible on stage, on full volume. I`m not tallking difficult to hear, it could not be heard at all - no matter what eq settings I tried. Whereas I`ve never had any similar problems with amps of 300 watts or more. So the technology and theory is fine, but I let my ears make the decision, if they can hear an amp it`s loud enough, if they can`t, it`s not.
Ah, I see where you went wrong. You'll need to add a cab or two to that setup.
