1.
I used to have a real hankering for one of these back in the 80's, but it looks awfully dated now.
There is no doubting that it's a good looking thing. It remains to be seen if these turn 'vintage' in the same way as a Fender. I doubt it personally though. The Artist models do fetch decent money and they are very 'whizzy' in the electronics dept, but the standards just don't stack up any more, and they're battleship heavy!
2.
How many "fairly bog standard" basses do you know have a maple body, have 22-24 frets, have a series/parallel switchable humbucker, have a four in line angled headstock, have strengthening rods in the neck and have a bridge which is adjustable in all directions (action, intonation and string spacing)? I hate to think what your understanding of "bog standard" is.
I notice you have 2 artists models. Was the standard a bit too bog standard for you? It's a fact that many have tried to emulate the success of the Fender P, but most have failed dismally, including Gibson!
3. Hi Dave, Yes it's the very same and it's a corker as you know. Strangely, the volume and tone pots are wired the other way round. I asked Simon in Cardiff guitars to leave it that way when he had a look at it because I kinda like it that way. I was considering putting a Seymour in it but he reckoned the one that's in it is better! I don't know if all the Korean made Squiers were good but I'm kinda thinking that this one is exceptional, just so playable with a new set of Ernie Balls on it. Anyway, any buyer would be really pleased with it, but as I say, I'll leave it a few days and hang on to it if no-one wants it. LC
4. Hmm...lot's of views but no comments. Methinks you all might be thinking this is a little expensive and I know this isn't a good time to sell. I decided on this price because this bass is so good. I've played a lot of Squiers and owned a few, and this one beats them all hands down. I'm talking myself into keeping it aren't I? I'll leave it here another week and keep it if no-one wants it. Cheers, LC
5. One of Norm's basses in on sale at Andy Baxter Guitars, the shoreline gold one. No price on it so it's bound to be bucks!
6. A few years a go I depped for the cellist for a weeks run of The King and I and turned up for band call having never seen the dots!! The fact it was a paid gig made it worse (more pressure). I got to the theatre early to find the music on the stands and quickly rifled through it to see if there were any solo's of which there were a couple just so I wouldn't just happen across them during rehearsal. I need not have worried, the MD was a great bloke and made allowances for me getting to know the music and by the end of the week I could play it in my sleep. Don't forget to mark up your copy in rehearsal with all the vamps etc and enjoy it! There is nothing like playing with other musicians and you might find that some of them won't have had the dots for long either! Good luck LC
7. It looks like a double glouster to me!
8. The same fella has a Daion power XX bass on E bay. I was drooling over it the other day, looked like it was built very well indeed.
9. Yeah, nice looking thing. A fairly bog standard failed P bass rival though. This one is not a bad price, there's one on Andy Baxter Bass for £850!
10. I used to play cricket with my corvette $$, amazing array of sounds....hideous neck!
11. Vintage 'cack' by the look of it. Might clean up tho and be a bit of a project. New body, neck, tuners, pup's, bridge, nut, strings and it'll be as good as new! Had to be worth 20 quid surely? LC
12. Came away from Bass Direct this afternoon with a nice Vigier and a Stage Clix wireless kit. Won't be gassing for the Lull's just yet....as I'm skint! LC
13. Daion ? There's one on E bay and it's absolutely beautiful. LC
14. I promised myself I wouldn't sell this, but having just crashed out the best part of two grand in Bass Direct I guess I really should try and recoup some of that. This a proper P bass, deep and punchy, built in the Sammick factory in 1996 and I regularly pick this up in favour of my US P bass, it's that good. The build quality is excellent and it's in fantastic condition with a nice low action. I took it to Simon at Cardiff Guitars for a service and he reckons it's a good 'un. This would make a brilliant first Bass or a reliable back-up. I'd like [s]£210[/s] £180 please, no trades and I'd prefer not to post but may consider at buyers expense. Cheers, LC
15. 2008 USA std P, Oly white and torte, mint? LC
16. Nick is a good chap, has faaaaaaaaarrrr too many basses!
17. Yep, Can't go wrong with this. The more recent Am Std's are very good indeed. Good price too. Good luck, LC
18. There is an example of Neil's work in Cranes in Cardiff at the mo. Looks very nice indeed. He used to be a carpenter and spent a lot of time on building sites until he got fed up with it. I spoke to him today, very nice guy and helpful. Might just ask him to make me something. Just wondering if anyone knows his work? He's based in Glastonbury. LC
19. I rate Bass Direct as Mark is very helpful, attentive etc and his place is choc full of basses, most of which are desirable and exotic. Not so many Amps but what he has got is quality gear. Bought a very nice 70's P from him a couple of months ago. LC
20. I bought a '70's precision from Bass Direct a few weeks ago. For those of you that haven't met Mark the proprietor, he's got a real downer on Fenders and I can understand that as he has a shop full of exotica like Nordy's, Vigiers, and Dingwalls. He had just 1 precision in and I bought it which tells me a lot but you nothing at all. It's all a matter of personal taste and age may have something to do with it? If you caught OGWT 70's Gold edition on the TV the last weekend nearly every band on had a Fender bass in it, what you've been brought up with?? Having said all this, Bass Direct now have the new Ken Smith 'white tiger' in which I'm drooling over. This is probably a whole new thread but has anyone got a view on Ken Smith's work, especially the white tiger??? It's Fender's for me for now but who knows....... LC
21. Whats goin on - Marvin Gaye Peg - Steely Dan Road to Ruin - Mr Big. You'll find the dots in the Theory & Technique thread. Not that difficult but full of rhythm changes and syncopation. YYZ - Rush
22. Just to say Pete that I'm looking forward to seeing you guys in the Globe in November! LC
23.
Here's a transcription of that tune. Joe.
What a top bloke you are Sir! Thanks a bunch for this, just makes life so much easier! Gary
24. Thanks. Yes, I'd originally gone there to try the '78 Jazz, but I felt that the bridge Pup was a bit lacking (low output), and it was a three bolter. So I tried the P and was amazed at it's condition which has to be 9/10. The body is beautifully figured and is all original. It has flats on it (not sure what make) but they play and sound great! All in all, a good purchase. Mark is very good at Bass Direct but he carn arf talk!!! LC
