One of the few left on my list of basses I`d really like to try, especially after the famous Bass Player magazine test of 5 strings ” The 5 string shoot out” or something like that. However, what I`ve experienced is that instruments with a slight off-set of the body neck joint comparred to traditional Fender style of the 12th. fret in line with the position of the strap lock on the upper horn, in this case it`s at the 14th. can make playing the first frets a “Stretched “ experience. The worst in this case are Warwick Thumbs and old Alembic series 1/ Stanley Clark models. Funny enough not with the wonderful Warrier Dran Michael Signature I traded years ago with Acebass, and stupidly sold after a while. It had the joint around the 14th.fret and played wonnderful. Same with a couple of other basses, and then a problem with Warwick Streamers, Jerzy Drodz and other I`ve have had. So guys, to those of you who have owned and played them, what`s your experience?

Sad to see this being left in a corner as I don`t play for the time being. Make me a resonable offer so it can get back to what it`s supposed to do - make music. Don`t think this bass requires a long introduction of the basic features. A versatile powerhouse of a bass that despite the single PU still has a couple of tricks up it sleeves with the PU coil selector swith. Haven`t examined sn. and year of build, but believe it to be around 2000. Could be wrong though. Tasteful Olive Metallic Green with a customized pickguard I found and imported from Canada. A bridge between the colors of Tortoise with a hint of the Metallic Olive A spare even more expressive pick guard can be included as spare or installed as preferred by the buyer. Overall fair condition, neck, trussrod, frets, PUand pre-amp works flawlessly, just a fwe paint chips on the lower edge of the body and upper edge of the headstock. Bass will be shipped in a literally new hardshell case from Fender. Price include shipping to EU. Add 30£ to UK as not all couriers offer private shipping to UK post Brexit. A very very reluctant sale indeeed. I first came across Chris Larkins instruments some +25 years ago reading an appraising review. As they never have been made in high volumes they don't come up for sale very often. Small series quality and attention to details from one of the best and most respected (deceased) instrument makers. Aquired this quite recently but the 35" scale on this design simply doesn't work for me. If you're used to Warwicks, Spectors, MTD's, Alembics etc. etc. you won't have a problem. I'm from the old school Fender ergonomics. Very clean condtion, only a few smaller marks on the lower body edges. Mahogony body and sandwich construction with facing of to me unknown beutiful veneer. 35" 24 fret mahogony and maple neck. Flat C shaped profile. Pls. notice, Larkin was one of the very few who used the set-neck principle. String spacing at bridge 18 mm, saddle witdth at 1st. fret is 44,5 mm with B to G string spacing of 36,5 mm center to center. Width of neck at 24th fret is 70,5 mm. Weight around 4 kg, definitely not above 4,5. Kent Armstrong PU's Schaller tuners & composite material nut. Bridge supplier is unknown, but obviously of matching quality EBS special series pre-amp. Volume, blend, treble and bass. Swith changes the pre-amp function making the treble pot a mid range boost function. Incredible punch! Sound: Yes the do sound like a Ken Smith (had a BSR5EG in the past). Unusual combination of Clarity, punchy and authority. But what is most noticeble is the dynamic of the tone . Never had an instrument which reachted so fast in the development of the tone. If you play slap funk, be-bop. fusion, avantgarde jazz or anything with lots of 16' notes and want to hear everyone of them, here's the instrument which will serve you perfectly. Shipping central Europe included. Trade: Yes absolutely, hit me with everything 5 string Regards Thomas WhatsApp:+45 6120 9520

Bass Mods KM5 - Reserved until 15.11 to Sami in Finland :0) - *SOLD*

Yes somebody did a wonderful job. This instrument more than provides everything I could possible ask for. A very special feature that you get to notice after a while is that the pre-amp doesn`t just raise the treble level. What it does is introduce “air” around the tone. Never ear shattering sharp metallic zing, it just opens up the sound and allow the higher register of a tone to be noticed. A quality in a pre-amp I`ve only heard in the 19” rack mounted Glockenklang BassArt I`ve had in the past. There`s still a very few instruments out there that I`d like to try before putting this hobby/musical lifestyle to bed. Xotic XB-2 that Carmine Rojas used for a period while playing with Joe Bonamassa in the 2010`s and a Keith Roscoe Lg3005/lg5. But honestly, more of couriosity than anything else. A lefelong experience is that more expensive instruments doesn`t make you play better. Look better maybe, but the rest is down to practice and talent 🙂 -
Well here's one you don't see often. Absolutely mint condition Bass Mods KM5, upgraded with Aguilar PU package. Definitely on level with the many other 5 string Jazz Basses that I have had over the year from Sadowsky Japan, Mike Lull and F-Clef just to mention a few. Retail new would likely be around 2200-2500 £ with import charges from US and VAT. Ash body, maple neck and fretboard with inlays 34" scale, > 4 kg, 45 mm neck width at saddle, 78mm at 21st. fret. 19 mm string spacing. Fretboard radius around 18" Pleck'ed frets i.e. as good and even as it gets. Aguilar PU package with AG 5M/J-HC i.e. split coil neck and parallel MM at bridge Pre-amp is Bass Mods own noiseless 18V consisting of Volume, Balance, active passive swith, stacked bass & treble, mid with 3 way switch for frequencies, likely 250/500/750 or 300/600/900 Hz. Tuners from Hipshot, no sure of the bridge but quality on par with the best. Color really depending on surrounding light. If bright it's silver changing to almost gold'ish in darker rooms. Shipping in well packed but used Gator soft case. If hardshell Gator case required add 60£. Perfectly happy with it, just on the look out for something towards a Musicman 5 sound. Trade options welcome however only 5 strings. Link to my bass from the shop it came from.

I think I owed this specific instrument for a period. Is this the one I traded earlier with you Mustapha? If it is, it's an excellent bass. Looks larger and heavier than it is. Really comfortable to carry, play and enjoy the sound off. Not just a spetacular design but excellent quality in all matters of design , build, fit and function. Highly recommended, both the bass AND the seller🙂 Thomas

Thanks Guys. Yes indeed a wonderful bass, just a shame if it doesn't get played which is the very likely situation if it remains in my position. My current inventory consists of this, a 5 string fretless that I'll never sell (Lefay) and that's actually it, so I am really down to the bare minumum. As stated above, not interested in a direct trade but if you have another lower cost 5 string, preferable Jazz type or Musicman, I can take that plus money. Can't see myself being without an instrument, just don't need something this valuable if it doesn't get played. Kind Regards Thomas -

Musicman SR5 sound - but with 19 mm string spacing
Thomas P replied to Thomas P's topic in Bass Guitars
Thanks All. Some very valuable inputs. -
Believe title says it all. I just feel so much more comfortable playing a 5 string bass that has 19 mm string spacing, but would love something with the punchy, slightly compressed tone you can get from a Musicman when the treble is rolled of a bit. I`m not after a Louis Johnson Stingray slap sound, think more Pino. It`ll be a back-up for my 5 string jazz bass where the song allows the sound to be more pronounced or “in your face” to use that expression. Warwick and Spector are obvious choices but their design don`t work for me, I`m always left with a feeling of having to stretch to reach first freet. So what should I look for. Lakland, Ibanez ATK, others? Thomas

Probably one of the the most versatile basses around. No wonder as it came from the man who invented the single PU Precision, followed by the double PU Jazz. Then the Active MM and now this with dual PU, series/parallel switch, front, both and rear PU switch + passive, active and active + treble boost pre-amp. US L2500 from around 2002-2004. Two owners, a friend of mine and I, so I've known this instrument for +10 years. It's been used a lot causing the rear side of the neck to feel extremely smooth and comfortable. It has this really nice "Broken in" feeling you only get from well used instruments Other than that, the almost mandatory marks at the upper edge of the head, and at the rear body edge. No blemishes to the front of the body. Everything obviously works as it should and I'm still impressed with how much you can cover with one of these, from Preci with the front PU in passive mode + full bass boost and treble dialed back, to clean Jazz with both in parallel, to power MM sound with both PU's in series active preamp with treble boost. The working Man's Do All in one instrument, and in a finish that'll work in any stage environment Comes in original G&L hardcase. Spec: Ash body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard. 34" scale. Weight around 4 kg, definitely not much above. String spacing at bridge around 18 mm. Noticable non tapered neck width comparred to say modern 5 string jazz basses (46 mm at saddle and 70mm at 21st. fret) Priced to sell so not much wiggle room there, and this time no trades :0 Happy Holidays Thomas Handy & WhatsApp: +45 6120 9520 Email: [email protected]
