Good place to get my bass set up?
MatthewKeys replied to MatthewKeys's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thanks wayne! I use elixir on both of my basses, not because I want to, but they are the only strings that don't die within an hour of playing from my acidic sweaty hands! -

And theres something seriously wrong with my precision, but no one I know can seem to find what it is! The strings are REALLY tense, it's as if they are being strangled... when every other P bass i've played feels really loose. But yeah i've tried setting it up myself, the guys in Music Matters tried setting it up but it was still really strangled. -
Good place to get my bass set up?

I Have tried many times and I can't get the action to be low without extreme tension on the strings! And my Jazz bass was bought for very cheap and it is in horrible condition, it could definitely be looked at! -
Hey Basically, my mexican fender jazz and my mexican fender precision are in dire need of a set up! Does anyone know anywhere good in Maidstone (or very close to) where I can get an awesome set up on my bass for a reasonable price? Thanks!

Eh guys, turns out the one he is selling is one of the older ones which look different... and it doesn't look too good to be honest and i'm not willing to part £300 for it. But I am still on the look out for one of these, SO if anyone is selling one of the newer 810 ABM's, message me!
I don't think there's any doubting the capabilities of an ABM810 and if you can get it for £300 with a cover its good value, i guess you just have to decide if it suits your requirements and if you fancy humping a 70 kilo cab around! I'm biased as i hump a MAG810 around and it doesn't bother me. The sight of your amp parked on top of an 8x10 and the sound when its cranked more than makes up for the physical effort!
I guess your right! However, the Mag weighs 64kg whereas the ABM weighs 70kg... is that 6kg difference going to be noticeable?
-
Yeah, it's a shame because if it really does look like the perfect 8x10.. It's almost as light as a markbass one! Any more opinions on the Ashdown ABM and it's portability anyone?
-
The laney 810 looks perfect! But they seem fairly uncommon, and I doubt I will find one secondhand for £300.....
I've never used an Ampeg 8x10 but i imagine they must be pretty good considering how many of them are out there! Maybe a 6x10 might be worth considering?
Yeah Ampeg 6x10's are about 50kg... 20kg lighter than the ashdown... but also around £200 more expensive. But then it might get a similar tone to my 410hlf which I do not like.
I can lift mine into the back of a van on my own but i wouldn't want to do much more than that! They are very heavy but i'm lucky that mine is stored at our rehearsal room so i just wheel it into place to use it and wheel it back when i'm done, and when we gig we all travel together in a van so it's rare i have to lift it by myself. Everyone seems to be going to lightweight gear now, so there's some bargains to be had if you don't mind a bit of bulk! So if you don't mind a bit of physical exercise, go for it. I guarantee the first time you stand in front of it when its really cooking, the weight of it will be the last thing on your mind!!
that is reassuring, thanks! I've read that Ashdown 810's are 70kg and Ampeg ones are 63kg or something... would it be worth saving another £200 to save up for an Ampeg one? I am 6ft2 but pretty weak, I think I would struggle getting it to, and out of the car for almost every single show. But i'm not sure because i've never tried to move an 8x10 before. I struggle with my 410HLF, purely because it's so low down.
If they are the same dimensions as a MAG 8x10 then yes it will fit in a Focus. Never used an ABM 8x10 but it's a lot of cab for that price especially with a cover thrown in. My only gripe about my MAG 8x10 is that the castors it comes with are rubbish, mine started to fall apart after about a month! But i managed to get much better quality replacements cheaply so it's not a major problem.
thanks! I hear that the ABM comes with better quality components anyway. How do you find moving the 8x10 around? Can you move it by yourself?

Hello I was just wondering what everyones opinions are on the Ashdown ABM 810. 1. Are they much heavier than an Ampeg 410HLF? Would it fit into a Ford Focus? 2. I can pick one up for £300 in immaculate condition with a free case worth £75... is this a good deal? 3. How do they sound? And any other things you have to say about them! Thanks!
There's a recent post about the very subject: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=134360 Hope it helps!
Thanks, i'l check it out now!
I wouldn't stop playing bass just because your hands tend to sweat more than average. I would recommend wiping down your strings after playing them and maybe look at getting some string cleaner for after practice/gigs etc. A few bass players out there wear gloves and play, I personally think this looks insane but again, worth thinking about perhaps.
It's more so the clamminess of my hands making it hard to play, like sometimes it's actually ridiculous! But if all fails, I guess I could try the gloves for a bit!

Hey all Basically, I have sweaty and really clammy hands and causes so many problems when it comes to bass. If I use an ordinary set of strings, such as rotosound or ernie ball, after two-three days it will sound like they have been under the ocean for a few hundred years; this makes me have to buy a new set of £35 elixir strings every month (and that's just for one bass!). It also makes playing very hard for me, which is the worst part. I was wondering if anyone that has a similar problem, has found a decent solution for this, like a hand anti-persperant or hand surgery or something!? It's causing a lot of problems and i'm going to have to stop playing bass and sell all my gear if theres no way to fix this because it's just stressful and I can't afford to change my strings that often, especially £35 ones! Thanks!
buy my 410 HE to go with it?
Yes, I will!!! Where are you located? and how much

The SVT7 pro is a really good amp in my opinion; and it has plenty of headroom. There is currently one on gumtree atm http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/ampeg-sv...kaging/78050660 Someone is also selling an SVT4 PRO head for £450 with a rackcase on here, which is a steal for a £1300 pound head!
Hmmm :/ Even without a tweeter the cab should still be pumping out some highs at around the 2khz mark. If you could post some kind of video or something I dont know. Usually if I have an issue I can't fix myself I just take it to my local stores as they'll usually check it for free and then if it's bust offer to fix it with a cost of labour plus parts.
Yep, not many highs coming from the 10 inch speakers. I don't think my local music store would know what to do with a problem like this, but I could always take the head in and try it on a cab. I emailed the guy at the amphospital in surrey, and he said it could be possible that the speakers could be over-dissipated. But he would need to test it to say for certain, which would cost £50.
Are the speakers the originals? If this cab is really sounding that bad, it may be that there have been replacement/rubbish units put in there. As said, whilst the tweeter does put some crispness to the sound, running any cab without the tweeter will still give some highs. This all seems strange to me. I`d definately try using a different amp through the cab. The SVT3-PRO has such a wide range of sounds, that if a different amp sounds ok through the cab, the problem may be with the amp. Likewise, try the amp through a different cab, same thing.
Hey, to be honest I really don't know whether the speakers are originals but I would assume they are. I bought it off a basschatter after the summer; it's one of the american made ones. I think it's about 5 years old. And yes I will be able to test my head on a different cab in my local music store, but I don't know if they would let me take the cabinet in and try a head.

But I really didn't get along with the 410HLF, and i'm guessing the 610HLF is kind of similar because they are both ported?
-
In view of this..then maybe a 610 is the better bet. In days gone past, I never liked the Ampeg chassis' and they were low powered. Depending on your POV..this was Ampeg being conservative OR other makers being OTT with cab power ratings. It could have been that I was using tired old hired-in rigs most of the time which probably didn't help with my observations A 610 is going to be around 600w hopefully ...and that will easily cope with a 450w amp..but you'd need the 610 to be 4 ohms to to get that sort of power. Getting a 210 AND a 410 for that budget might be hard...
One of the reasons I was thinking of the idea of getting two separate cabs was to take the smaller one to band practise instead of having to lug around a big 610; but then at gigs use the 410 and 210. I've seen 210s go for around 200-250 in the past and 410HE's go for around 250. Might have to exceed £500 by a bit but it shouldn't be a lot over
was kind of hoping you wouldn't ask, explaining is hard when tired. Basically, if you think of a 8 ohm 4x10 with 8 ohm speakers, it will be wired as two 16 ohm 2x10s in one box, so when you add a third 16 ohm 2x10, all three are the same, thus power distributes evenly. If you have an 8 ohm 2x10 and an 8 ohm 4x10, both complete cabinets will get an equal amount of power, so the 2x10 will be getting twice as much power per speaker than the 4x10, so it will be struggling whilst the 4x10 is coasting and drowning the struggling sounds out.
Right yea I think I know what you mean. But how do would you fix that problem?
