  1. Most of my gigs are reggae and sometimes I have used my Dubster II and Big baby II together as recommended by Alex and the bottom end is Righteous, heavy and clean!!!! Strictly speaking I didn't bi-amp it Just had two cabs that had different frequency responses. I do have a crossover on my pre-amp so i could have done bi-amping by frequency. I tried it once but found it a bit fiddly to find the right crossover frequency to set. My new pre-amp has two independent channels so I have the option to send each pickup to a separate cab through my stereo power amp. Hope I get the chance to try it on a gig this year. Probably not any use for reggae though.
  2. A variety of vibes from Ska, Toots, John Holt, Wailers, Morgan Heritage, Beres Hammond, UB40. I had pretty much paused my guitar playing to concentrate on bass, so this is a nice push to get my chops back as i do still have some nice guitars that deserve to be played.
  3. Not bass but, i have been asked to cover on guitar for a good friend who's band has just lost both guitarists for an upcoming gig. So dusting off my guitar and learning some 90 minutes worth of vintage reggae classics.πŸ‘πŸΎπŸ€ͺπŸ˜πŸ”ŠπŸŽΆπŸŽ΅πŸŽΈ
  4. wow that's an incredible looking venue. No doubt the gig was superb too.. πŸ‘πŸΎ
  5. I quite like rack units so i can mix and match as i please. The first picture was my old rack until i started downsizing to lighter gear which is when the QSC got replaced with a crown. This is my current rack with a new F2-B and vintage alembic In-2 switching unit with bass power supply and two DI outs. Only got those two bits last year so not had a chance to use it live yet. Overall i think the QSC sounds more hifi to my ears and more punchy, but the overall weight of the rack made it a chore to drag to gigs, hence the Crown replacement. I do have a Walkabout head which i think is a great head that i use when travelling light with out my cabs.
  6. I am curious about these things, do you actually hear your bass through bone conduction or is it just pumping the dynamics into your feet as punches and you are not experiencing any sound. For example if you used it without in-ears or any other speakers, do you hear anything from the transmission of sound through your body to the inside your head?
  7. Looks fine with Phil Lesh https://ritter-instruments.com/artist-series-phil-lesh.php
  8. Have we just seen the perfect double bass for metal? πŸ˜‚
  9. This is a video we had filmed early last year (2021). It's not recorded with the double bass, I just thought it would look better on the video..
  10. Yeah I found a bass that is perfect for me, (maybe slightly different meaning to the OP). What I like is that the pickups have a really even sound throughout the sound spectrum. Whilst i can use it successfully for all genres I get to play, I am particularly choosy about when I take it to gigs. Like someone else pointed out perfect is not a static thing. So while this one is the most perfect of my basses, there are others that i choose when I want a different kind of perfect :-).
  11. If the DI in the pedal is uses an isolation transformer, then you won't fry it as the DC won't transmit through the transformer to the pedal. Might be worth browsing this article on DI's it refers to stage DI's but the principle is the important thing. I just looked up the pedal pdf on line and it does not mention much about the DI but since it has a psu i guess it's an active DI. Maybe a recording guru will enlighten on the best line of action. Prepare to DI! (soundonsound.com)
  12. I recall seeing two alembic series basses in the window of a shop in Birmingham called Woodroffe's, just after the first Clarke Duke oproject tour came to town. I think this was some time in 1981 or early 1982. Both basses were up for sale for Β£3000 one was the large classic body shape and the other was the short scale series bass.
  13. The tone was in the mittens unless they were fingerless. πŸ§₯
  14. I had to make a version of that. I once turned up to a gig without any strings on my bass. Could not get a decent sound, no matter how I tried. I've been told that the tone is all in the fingers, but I also remain unconvinced. I'll get my coat πŸ™‚ πŸ§₯ πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
  15. Almost every gig I've been provided with a bass rig that all the bands use, or festivals I have been to watch the bass rigs have mostly been some kind of Ampeg, next popular would Ashdown with about equal measures of Eden and Markbass. So I would say Ampeg rigs are still the standard for most genres. As for instruments FSO's are still the ones I see mostly on stages, on tv concerts or videos, regardless of genre so I would again think they are still industry standard. That said there are obviously individual variances and my setups are far from industry standard.
  16. I had a dep gig with an acoustic instrument/vocal band called Eeek, at a club in Wolverhampton last night called "Georgeous" doing Christmas Carols. It's been decades since i have played any of those kind of songs and back then it was on guitar. Nice gig and really nice band to play with. I think this is the third dep i have done for them.
  17. I have a Schertler Unico that I bought for my EUB and recently got a Barefaced LF800 powered sub to use via the schertler's aux send. It has an LF switch to set the crossover with it. I was not looking for a loud sub, just something to add some weight to the bottom end. So far I've used it on one outdoor under cover gig and it was fine. I have an indoor gig on Wednesday and if the sound guy wants it off. I will go along with that.πŸ‘
  18. They are not currently in production and I don't think they made many. Mine is a pre-production model without a serial number, bought from a bass chat member.
  19. i had regular failures with plannet waves cables until i replaced the jacks with neutrix ones. Same with Fender ones, the jacks look sturdy but Neutrix are much more reliable in my experience.
  20. This topic subject is always going to be a contentious one. Formerly a guitarist first, I have not owned many brands of basses so have virtually no useful personal experience of the differences their construction woods, neck through, set neck or bolt on etc has on their sound. (this is one of the reasons I joined this forum and talkbass). When I decided to have a go at playing bass properly I made my choice from the bass sounds I enjoyed the most in my record collection, and chose the one who's sound i found the most interesting. Hence ended up with high end bass. With that bass I haven't chosen based on any claimed tonal properties of the woods of construction as I have confidence that any bass I buy from their brand will sound fine. If I was to choose to buy another of their basses it would be based on the model and the cosmetic appearance of their body & woods. I would be hard pressed to recall a gig I went on that the bass sound was dreadful, badly mixed ..yes, some I prefer more than others. Buy what you like and your budget allows, enjoy playing it and pay less attention to what others think you should be playing. Life is too short, and really who actually cares about diminishing returns if you are playing a bass you really love engaging with regardless of price point?
  21. It triggers mine too but less so when I use the my setup like this. However I use this setup mainly if it's a reggae gig and don't have the bass in the PA or it's an outdoor gig. Helps keep the heft in the bottom end. .
