I had to make a version of that. I once turned up to a gig without any strings on my bass. Could not get a decent sound, no matter how I tried. I've been told that the tone is all in the fingers, but I also remain unconvinced. I'll get my coat 🙂 🧥 😂😂😂😂

Almost every gig I've been provided with a bass rig that all the bands use, or festivals I have been to watch the bass rigs have mostly been some kind of Ampeg, next popular would Ashdown with about equal measures of Eden and Markbass. So I would say Ampeg rigs are still the standard for most genres. As for instruments FSO's are still the ones I see mostly on stages, on tv concerts or videos, regardless of genre so I would again think they are still industry standard. That said there are obviously individual variances and my setups are far from industry standard.

I had a dep gig with an acoustic instrument/vocal band called Eeek, at a club in Wolverhampton last night called "Georgeous" doing Christmas Carols. It's been decades since i have played any of those kind of songs and back then it was on guitar. Nice gig and really nice band to play with. I think this is the third dep i have done for them.

I have a Schertler Unico that I bought for my EUB and recently got a Barefaced LF800 powered sub to use via the schertler's aux send. It has an LF switch to set the crossover with it. I was not looking for a loud sub, just something to add some weight to the bottom end. So far I've used it on one outdoor under cover gig and it was fine. I have an indoor gig on Wednesday and if the sound guy wants it off. I will go along with that.👍

They are not currently in production and I don't think they made many. Mine is a pre-production model without a serial number, bought from a bass chat member.

i had regular failures with plannet waves cables until i replaced the jacks with neutrix ones. Same with Fender ones, the jacks look sturdy but Neutrix are much more reliable in my experience.

This topic subject is always going to be a contentious one. Formerly a guitarist first, I have not owned many brands of basses so have virtually no useful personal experience of the differences their construction woods, neck through, set neck or bolt on etc has on their sound. (this is one of the reasons I joined this forum and talkbass). When I decided to have a go at playing bass properly I made my choice from the bass sounds I enjoyed the most in my record collection, and chose the one who's sound i found the most interesting. Hence ended up with high end bass. With that bass I haven't chosen based on any claimed tonal properties of the woods of construction as I have confidence that any bass I buy from their brand will sound fine. If I was to choose to buy another of their basses it would be based on the model and the cosmetic appearance of their body & woods. I would be hard pressed to recall a gig I went on that the bass sound was dreadful, badly mixed ..yes, some I prefer more than others. Buy what you like and your budget allows, enjoy playing it and pay less attention to what others think you should be playing. Life is too short, and really who actually cares about diminishing returns if you are playing a bass you really love engaging with regardless of price point?

It triggers mine too but less so when I use the my setup like this. However I use this setup mainly if it's a reggae gig and don't have the bass in the PA or it's an outdoor gig. Helps keep the heft in the bottom end. .

It has never been common for me to allow other musicians to use my instruments basses or guitars. I had one multi-band gig where we were headlining and the band before us (blondie tribute band) came and asked to use my bass. I was polite and declined saying I don't allow anyone to play my basses. Few minutes later he was back on stage playing his own bass that sounded fine to me. My band know that and have told me a number of times when people have asked them if I mind them using my bass or gear and they have told them it won't happen. The last time anyone other than me played them was at the midlands bass bash in 2019. Never had a string break on a gig but I always carry spare strings. One used and one new set. If a string broke I would prefer to replace it with a used string as it is more likely to balance better tone wise with the existing strings. Then when I get home, change the strings for a new set.

I tried a compressor pedal at home once when I was learning to slap but that was a tone sucker so it had to go. As for reggae again i just plug direct into my amp. Though I have noticed a number of the reggae bass players i've seen on gigs using the octaver/sub button on their bass amps, It does give a heavy bottom end but is also muddy and lacks clarity. But I wouldn't use one for reggae, but maybe if I was doing anything by parliament funkadelic it would give something like that a try. For reggae good bass rig tone controls and barefaced cabs work well for me.

To me that sounds like a distortion/overdriven sound on the bass. So is that what is generically termed as Grunt, any bass sound with overdrive or distortion? Don't misread my comments I'm not trying to be awkward or criticise anything about anybass or anyone's choice of sound i'm just trying match the terms used to describe a sound with an actual sound that I can recognise on a bass if I hear it. Grunt? i read that word a lot relating to bass sounds but have no idea what that means. Can anyone enlighten me please?
