  1. I noticed them because I had been trawling ebay and other on-line sites regularly looking for my dream alembic. 🤫🤓🤓 I've found it so don't do it a much now.
  2. Yes that bass may be new in the sense that it has not been sold by the dealer but it is not a recent build and has been on sale since at least 2016.
  3. There have been a number of alembic J style basses come up on ebay over the years and yes those two have been listed for sale for a heck of a lot of years. In face bass direct had one not too long ago ok yes i just checked and its still here. That is a beauty. http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/Alembic_Custom_4.html
  4. If you look at how far forward the bridge is, it is much further forward that a regular bass so this will dictate how far the reach is to first position. To play, the length feels very much like a long scale bass but obviously the fretting is narrower. I guess it needs to be that far forward in order to access the upper frets without a deep cutaway on the lower horn.
  5. These This has been my experience too but i prefer wearing the bass lower.
  6. That is a beauty I just love those basses. I have one and have recently had a chat with Mica at alembic and am about to order the new wiring harness to convert the electronics from signature to anniversary but without the pickup and mono stereo switches since the existing position of the controls make putting those items in the traditional location difficult. I wish mine had the neck pickup positioned right on the truss rod cover as yours, as having played another like that it makes the bottom end so much thicker and yummy without losing the crisp sparkle in the tone!!!! All the best with the sale.
  7. Musical Youth at the Frog & Fiddle Cheltenham I'm in the basschair on this gig. Just out of curiousity, has anyone here played there and can give me a heads up on the stage and live room size. Cheers
  8. They fit in micro compact Smart cars too. Thought you'd need a really compact combo. https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=double+bass+in+a+smart+car&&view=detail&mid=46269B5E3740DEC5D22C46269B5E3740DEC5D22C&&FORM=VRDGAR
  9. I have that strap too. It's nicely padded and doesn't dig into my shoulder and my bass weighs in at 14lbs!
  10. For my rack mount bass rig, which has a separate pre and power amp, generally I have the master on full and adjust the input gain to get the volume I need, then any further adjustments live I do that from my bass. I normally don't go for real loud stage volume but this this method gives me a great clean articulate sound and the PA deals with the rest. However I can't do that option with my mesa boogie walkabout head as the background hiss is too high when the master gets anywhere near being at full level. So when using that head I probably have the master on about half and bring up the gain and volume on my bass to suit.
  11. Yeah I agree it does, but there is no way I would be lying on the pub floor to take the picture without the perspective distortion. 🙂
  12. They take a lot of weight. I have this rack which weights 56kg and my big baby 2 doesn't have any problems holding that up.
  13. I bought one of these about a decade ago and never regretted it. It's a superb piece of kit. Here is some reading material for anyone considering it. http://www.alembic.com/prod/sf2.html
  14. I have considered a custom a few times but because of the cash outlay on one, I want to be absolutely sure I know what I'm trying to get from a personal custom I cannot get from a bass that was not custom made for me. I have a few basses that were custom made for someone else and they feel fine for me even though I had no option to try them out before I bought them and that has also influenced my decisions. But the idea having one is a good one if you get it right.
  15. I'm just curious as to why most DB players I see live use small speaker cabs when electric bass players generally go for bigger cabs. Is there some other aspect of physics at play that I am unaware of? The DB strings are about 42 scale length and seem at least the same thickness as electric bass strings so I would have thought they would have a bigger impact on a speaker. I'm a beginner with a EUB and a PJB Briefcase that I practice through which is fine at low home levels. What say you?
  16. Agreed though I do wonder if anyone has gigged with one and hit it with that wattage and the cab and their hearing survived!
  17. The weight was the big factor in my offloading my PH cabs. I still have the 1x15 but that was because it was the hardest one to sell and incidentally the one I used the least. I used the 4x10 the most but I found that with the low end I needed for reggae it couldn't stay clean and loud and i'm not into the edgy sound. For everything else I never found any problem with the sound extremely thick, clean crisp and punchy. Kind of miss them sometimes just for their sound but loving my BF cabs.
  18. I have had 3 lessons so far learning to play and would like to know the pros and cons of standing to play vs sitting. Most people ive seen tend to stand. I am currently doing that but i think my posture must be wrong as my left hand and lower back ache after a practice session. I plan to discuss with my tutor on my next lesson but wondered what you guys who play think.
  19. I went for an interview at a company and when I got there I noticed a friend of mine I hadn't seen for a few years and had a quick chat with him on my way out of the interview room. As it happens I got the job and arrived there the following Monday and got shown to my desk which was next to the area that the admin ladies where. I presume my mate must have mentioned that I was a musician that played in few well known reggae bands. Anyway maybe an hour after I'd started working, one of them called me over to their cluster of desks showed me a picture of Astro they had googled and said.... "That's you isn't it"..!!!! Apart from our ethnicity, the fact we both have locks and are Brummies we look completely different. They could tell from my silence and facial response that, I did not take that as a compliment. 🙂 That said some of them came to a few of my gigs so that was cool.
  20. Also you could try the Bass Lounge in Manchester http://greatbritishbasslounge.com/product-category/bass-guitars/
  21. I m a real upright bass newbie and had 3 lessons so far. I bought an acoustic db about 5 years ago and it was inexpensive but OK based on my limited understanding of them. I took it for a setup and re-string which cost about the same as I paid for it. Then after a few years of neglect only because I have been far to busy to dedicate time to it due to work and other gigging pressures. I decided last year to start learning. I have noticed from years of going to watch jazz gigs that whenever they are used live they are always used with a pickup so you basically have an electro/acoustic EUB. (sorry if that sounds condescending it's not meant to). That in mind I decided to sell my mine and get a decent EUB that has a good DB sound, (my tutor assures me it does), is more portable and start learning from there. I'm not gonna say that an EUB is as authentic a sound or playing experience as a full blown acoustic DB but it's probably close enough for me now and hopefully in the future. I hope to play at least a couple of tracks with it on one of my gigs this year if my intonation is good enough.
  22. All my guitars and basses have their own individual straps. It seems common sense to me and it is not expensive to get good straps. Excluding my Stratocaster which came with a cloth based strap, all my straps are leather and whilst I have always been vegetarian and in recent years vegan. I won't be throwing those straps away anytime soon. When they are due to be replaced I will consider what the alternatives are depending on my viewpoint at the time.🧐
  23. My basses are heavy and as such I don't trust having any plastic on my straps so I use padded leather that are about 4" wide. One leather strap I bought way back in the late 70's for my guitar and it is now on one of my basses and is thick leather and looks like it will outlive me. Like someone else here I use Minotaur straps.
  24. I have both of those myself and they are incredible tone shaping tools. All the best with the sale.
