1.
Short scale series 2 built in 1982 and with a partial refurb from the Mothership back in 2010. The wood finish is original though and is the lovely satin lacquer that Alembic used to use before going all glossy. Acquired from Stefano (Steno) on this forum, credit to him for the pics.
How are you getting on with it? I just love this bass and wished I could have bought it when it came up for sale but alas my bass budget was depleted by a 5 string series bass last summer. If you are ever gigging round the midlands area with it let me know I'd love to hear it in action.
2.
My '89 .
Let me know if you ever decide you want to sell this bass. What are the controls on it?
3. I'm still waiting for an opportunity to try their cabs.
4. Mesa boogie powerhouse 2x10 is a good choice. I use one for my weekly jam session but they are pretty heavy weight cabs to carry.
5.
I'm not going to defend Schaller's as I'm aware they do have their faults, especially in getting the strap part fitted to something like a nice Levy's leather. What tends to happen is the hole is never big enough on the strap to take the Schaller and in forcing it through the existing gap, it bunches the leather around the hole and exaserbates the problem. To this end I purchased a set of leather hole punches. They were dead cheap ones from eBay and there is one in the set that is just the right circumference for Schallers. One clump with a hammer and the hole is trimmed perfectly to accept the Schaller without bunching the leather. In an ideal world I would love Dunlop Flush Mounted Locks fitted on all my basses. Fodera fit them as standard and I love 'em, but Im not taking a drill to and of my basses that don't already have them
In my case the bass was bought used and the previous owner was a luthier and he fitted dunlops in a different place and pluged the screw holes with dowel and a mother of pearl plug so it was just a case of redrilling the original holes. I haven't removed the dunlops but just don't use them.
6. I have schallers on all my basses and yes I think they could put a couple more threads on the strap fitting. But I tighten mine up really well and so far not had any fall off yet and i've replaced the bass part of the system on only one bass. Over time anything that moves will eventually wear out or come loose so just with all things It pays to check now and again and retighten as neccesary. One of my basses came with dunlops but since all the rest had schallers I put schallers on instead for no more reason than consistency.

8. I've had one of these since the mid 90's and it's the most beat up of my guitars. But it's a superb sounding and playing guitar.
9. All my basses have ebony fingerboards. Over the years I've avoided rosewood purely on cosmetic grounds on guitars and bass fretboards. I have no idea what the tone benefits are compared to maple or other woods. Well I guess now I'll never know.
10. Point well made Phil, thanks. :-)
11. Yes I have done it a number of times at venues that provide a bass rig that I really don't the sound. Not ideal for me really as I like to feel the bass as well as hear it.
12. I bought the fretted version of this one last summer and it has a great sound with the phosphor bronze strings. But I think when the strings need changing I will get some flats and see what that does for my sound. Although I don't currently play fretless, I'd like to find one in a shop so I can try it out.
13. Yep understand your point about not taking kindly to a request not to toucn anything. But that would be my perogative since the rig is mine if I thought someone was abusing it or I felt damage was likely to occur then I would have no qualms about turning the rig off. But I did stress to the bass player not to change anything on the amp. (I've read too many horror stories on here and on talk bass about that sort of thing and rarely the culprit is honourable enough to pay up for the repair). Fortunately the regular bass player is back now so that particular session is over. I'm back to my regular session where the volume is more sedate and the cab doesn't need to be loud. Phew. Thanks for the advice and suggestions guys. :-)
14.
Thanks to all so far for the suggestions. Thanks with putting me right on Harvest they are in the frame if a UK source does not work out. I'm based not far from Walsall which was known for it's Equine leather goods I'll see if there I anybody there that can help. Please keep up the suggestions. BR Alan
I'm not too far from Walsall and did lots of phoning around to see if anyone would make me a custom bass gigbag but none seemed interested. I think the leather museum would be a good place to start your search.
15.
Harvest are German. I've got two, they're great.
Yep they are, I have them and have no qualms about recommending them.
16. Have a look at flightcase warehouse they might have something there new or used.
17. Thanks guys I certainly will try first angling it upwards or raise the height so it's easier to hear the cab and hopefully if they can hear themselves they won't want to keep turning up and make themselves deaf. For me I was wearing earplugs and set my volume according to what balanced with the band and left it and moved to where I could hear it best which actually on that day was off to one side.
18.
If you (acting as sound guy) were turning down his volume, while he (on stage) was turning it up, perhaps it was more of a monitoring issue than anything else - he just couldn't hear himself?
yeah I think that was a lot of the reason for him upping the volume as the cab was a 2x10 vertically but right by your legs due to space constraints so even I couldnt hear myself perfectly but enough to get through. But I was concerned that he would turn it way up and blow the cab.
19. I wish I'd seen that before I bought my recent PJB!
20. On Monday this week I had a short notice dep call to hold down the bass on a jam session so I brought a small rig consisting of mesa boogie Walkabout head and 2x10 powerhouse cab. Later on a band came up to do a set and had an acoustic bass guitar which I plugged into my bass rig and eq'd it so that it wasn't too loud or too bassy and turned the tweeter to it's minimum setting as I know these things seem to kick out a heft of a signal. My parting words were don't turn anything and don't blow up my cab! Anyway as their songs went on I had to keep walking back to the stage to turn down the volume then bottom end and upper mids as it sounded raspy ( he was using a pick). On the one occasion I saw him turning up the volume between songs I went over reset it below where I originally had it and stood behind him for the remainder of the set. I'm not going to do that again. In future any acoustic bass players will have to go through the P.A. or bring their own amp. Any advice for me using that setup for myself in the future. Is it a good idea to use a regular bass rig for acoustic bass guitars or would I be better off with a dedicated acoustic bass guitar amp. As an aside at home I use my PJB Briefcase and that's ok at the volume levels I use and in theory on the right gig I could DI out from it into the P.A. but what about those in between gigs that the PJB is too small or those where there is no PA and the bass has to fill the room. Any experienced advice would be grateful.
21. I decided to have a switch put in my strat so I can have the outer two pickups on together and that gives me a good enough telecaster sound for what I need. I got it done by Martin at the Little Guitar Shop in Hockley Birmingham.
22.
OK sorry I'm not an Alemnerd.... how about this then? https://www.youtube....h?v=YlCzYpr-98Q
No need to be, I am a certified Alembic nerd and proud of it. :-) That link isn't a series bass either, nor are any of the ones on display in that video. Whilst the body looks the same as a series bass they are generally categorised by the electronics in the bass but that may not always be the case on a custom build. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TJ_UMV7sGQ The one in that video i posted is a series II which is basically the same shape as the one you linked to. But the body is wider to hold the series innards and has a 5 pin plug for the external power supply which comes standard with series basses and has true single coil pickups and a third pickup which is for the noise cancelling system. Hope that helps.
23. Tonights gig was superb. Played a jazz/reggae fusion gig with my band. The sound guy told me it's the biggest crowd he can remember at the venue. Good to know.
24. Hi George here is my addition to your thread. It's with my Alembic series II 5 stringer playing What is Hip? at a gig at the end of 2015. https://www.youtube....h?v=oLUT2Z_Fi68
25. Neither of them are series I or II instruments.
