They were £169 when released IIRC - but this was nearly 10 years ago so with RPI (not Brown's CPI bullshit factor), this probably isn't much over the new rrp. £80-100 were the shop prices after said shops bought huge batches of surplus from Akai when they were dicontinued, in fact, I'd be amazed if there was ever more than one huge production run.

Surely a similar spec could be found - only problem is fitting it in the case!
Cool. Looks like I've found another Aguilar GS412 now anyway. Sounds amazing with the V4 by the way, exactly how I'd hoped. Looking forward to a proper practice with it tomorrow, last one before studio time. The VBC810 was at Fairdeal Music: http://www.fairdealmusic.com/marshall/7042...10-bass-cabinet
Awesome, glad to hear it!

Joe, don't worry - you'll struggle to stress it out, I used to have the 412 and it'd handle pretty much anything thrown at it.

I've used Bass Central & guitarman nyc (www.guitarmannyc.com)

Ah, superb - as long as it's sealed then you are golden. Just think of the money you saved if it starts to feel heavy
Would postage be a possibility on an IEC mains lead?
Sorry - all promised out. PM me your address though and I'll pay our IT guy a visit!
I am not sure you will be able to crank them up enough to do a good comparison given the nature of the room!
That's a shame. Good point on practise amps - I can bring a little Line 6 10" job with a headphone output.

Jesus, some of you guys are a bit preachy on something that is purely subjective. YOU might like heavier gauge strings and YOU might think that anything else will result in crappy 'thin' tone. Just remember that not everyone is like YOU so can we stop touting personal opinion as fact? I like a heavy gauge but have over the years lowered my action a good deal. it works for me but it wouldn't for others. Just my tuppence worth.

Bit of a cheeky request (despite limited room for gear!) - does anyone have an Ampeg 810 that they can bring along? I'd love to do an A/B comparison with the Bergie 610 and see how it fairs with a good few neutral pairs of ears (i.e. those who haven't splashed out on either of the cabs!).
-
If you find that you don't get along with it, particularly using the V4, then one thing you need to consider which hasn't been mentioned above is the cabinet design - whether it is sealed or ported. Ampeg and the marshall VBC810 are sealed designs, as a result you lose a bit of low end but you will struggle (probably fail) to stress the cab out, whilst a ported design can and will fart out if you get up to stupid volumes; especially with a valve amp. That's the reason that everyone swears by the Ampegs etc. they are just bullet proof. Bergantino NV610 is supposedly better sounding (I don't know - never compared) - but it is half the weight and yet still a similar sealed design. Price-wise, it's not cheap but it's still not much different from the Ampeg.

COuldn't find a thread when searching so.... very prompt payment buying an amp off me - great to deal with. Cheers, bud!

Amazing deal on a beaten up GK400RBIII (which works faultlessly and sounds fantastic). Very, very well packed as it wasn't boxed and kept me updated whilst he was packing/posting. Cheers, Mike!
I'll be driving past the M4 end of the M32 and may have room if you can get to Hambrook ...
Much appreciate the offer - I'll start a thread a couple of weeks before the actual day so every is certain what they're up to etc.

I was about to agree with the pickup dropping - they all come too high from the factory, but I see that you've persevered so I suspect you'd be better off with another bass. Whilst they aren't quite Marmite basses, they are generally popular with players who appreciate the versatility and 'grunt' rather than one core sound.
-
They're all f***ing ugly, but that's nothing to do with the colour I like a bit of brightness, ideally a sparkle.

In response to the above post, I've never been a fan of the single pickup G&L's (1500/1505 - can't comment on the SB's). Unfortunately they won't do a Stingray neck (1.65"?), I asked when I ordered my L2000. Which Fender neck don't you get on with? Jazz or Precision? My L2000 is a 1.5" 11" radius like a jazz but I've played others with the huge P style necks too. Regarding the comparison with Stingrays, they do come close with the sound but not 100% - but the positive trade off is the massively increased versatility in tones with dual pickups and various switching options. If you like versatility in a bass then you are absolutely golden with an ASAT or L2000, however there are plenty of people out there who think they are too complex and just stick with something like a stingray which, even with lots of knob twiddling, will still sound like a stingray. I can understand both views, it's just that I fall into the former camp and love having the different sound on tap. On the ASAT, just beware the potential for neck dive with the lack of top horn - it looks great but after owning a Warwick Thumb I couldn't live with any more balance issues so went with the L2000. Hope this helps.

OK, I'm up for this. My Shuker 6 and G&L L2000 are probably 'run of the mill' enough not to bother bringing - is anyone interested in trying a Bergantino NV610 or a mid 70's Ampeg V4? I think a liftshare thread is needed, although I've got a small car so could probably only carry one person after gear! Good idea on the minibuses if there are enough takers, but i notice that there's not much response from the Bristolians on here yet.

I was under the impression that 'officially' we had dropped to 230 years ago but in reality in matters not.
-
It's fugly too!
-
It's a mod that a lot of people would do anyway on a jazz. Or they just buy a G&L

I know of a very picky Frenchman who never fails to be underwhelmed by most gear - his dream rig is a hevos.
