Yes, Fodera's are worth it, supply and demand speaks for itself. Some people wouldn't think twice about forking out more for an old Fender? Would you rather have a beautifully crafted instrument completed with all the TLC possible, or some old 'dog' screwed together from mass produced bits?

Upgrading your current double bass is false economy. It sounds like a fairly basic instrument and you will not recoup the money spent and will probably still want a better bass at the end. for the money, you'd be better off getting a half carved Gedo and investing in a pro setup. Gedo's are highly regarded on Basschat

I have both an AI combo and an AI head. The speakers are the weakest part in the AI combo's, that's why I run the head with some PJB cabs for gigs. With an acoustic amp such as the AI and Euphonic the speakers become the important part. The frequency response is markedly different from the same amp using different cabs and speaker sizes. I tried my AI through some 12 inch Vanderkley's at a recent bash and found that they had a much reduced bottom end to my PJB 4B's. I would love to try the AI with a Barefaced 1x12 though for a more lightweight setup.

You'll also need a neck shaped like a banana and some old socks under the strings near the bridge

I use 30-90 rotosounds on a 32 inch scale reso bass, however, it does have a di marzio humbucker near the neck. No problem with floppyness or low end response.

Anything goes these days, and there is no shame in rolling up with an eub to any jam. An eub, especially an NS, and an acoustic double bass are as similar as night and day. Both are vertical, but that's about it. Playing an NS is more akin to a vertical electric fretless and is fairly easy to adapt to. A db is a different beast altogether and will require much more practice and effort.

Try it with a nice Chianti perhaps?

I occassionally slap and use Spirocore Solo steel strings tuned down to EADG. This will give a lower tension compared with Spirocore Weichs. It's all about practice and some people, like Djordje Stijepovic, can play fast triple slap on medium tension steel strings!

Sounds like you may have the eub to low down if you get back ache. The top nut should be about level with your eyes. If you're not sure, get someone to check out posture / height etc. I agree that an eub is easier (less physically demanding) to play than a db. Nothing will prepare you for playing a db, other than proper lessons on a db.

Having your refreshments at a comfortable height between songs is essential. Having to bend down to reach your drink could cause injury. Adding the second cab will elevate the drink to a more comfortable height, thus avoiding injury.

A lot of cables etc grouped together and running across each other, can induce hum. If that's not the situation when you gig, ignore this, otherwise, separate the cables as much as possible and see if that reduces the noise.

Supply and demand, not much of a market out there. If you're looking for that level of functionality / amp sims, you'll probably be looking at an iphone with interface. Not sure why you'd want to clip a preamp onto your belt though.

I'm not a snob, just choosy. I know that my time here is limited and that I won't possibly be able to listen to everything. Therefore I choose to listen to stuff I like most, but that doen't mean I hate or do not appreciate other genres.

Interesting concept. There are bassists who are known for using one particular bass for most of their career, but not exclusively as far as I'm aware. The only person I can think of who's only ever used one guitar exclusively (although I may be proved wrong) is Brian May.

If you're looking to play most styles, inluding arco, a steel string, such as the Thomastik Spirocore Weich is your best option. Not cheap, but they will last for years and are very stable tuning-wise. Hybrid strings (synthetic core, steel wrap) can be cheaper but often won't bow as well, and will take longer to settle in.
