Not all J pickups are the same. Fender single coil J pups certainly suffer from this, but my EMG's don't.

All my lovin' is a great workout to play on double bass in one position.

For your budget, I'd suggest looking at a good laminate or hybrid (solid top, laminate back 'n' sides). I managed to pick up a second hand Gedo hybrid for a lot less than your budget, which I'm really happy with, although I use it mainly for rockabilly / rock'n'roll stuff. If you're transporting the bass a lot, a laminate or hybrid bass will stand up to the rigours of the road better. As Artisan said, if you're going to amplify the bass it makes very little difference what it's made of, and, to an extent, the laminates are less prone to feedback.

While you may not regret getting a double bass, there doesn't seem to be an immediate need. Just keep using the EUB for now, from what you say, they seem happy with that. I'm sure the desire to get one will take over soon

I'm sure Mark King isn't too keen on your sound either It's all subjective (as is the P v J debate). I currently dig the Jazz, having previously liked a good P, however mine has a Status Graphite neck .

Forget the acoustic bass(guitar) unamplified. You'll need at least a double bass (the bigger the better) and play it HARD.

Nice 'n' simple, does the job. I concur with the somewhat homemade feel. With a bit of tweaking / snazzier graphics, it could be turned into a punchier, more professional site imo.

Playing the same scales daily can be tedious to some. For a more 'musical' (less tedious) approach it's worth learning / reading / practicing something like the Bach cello pieces adapted for bass guitar.

Eberhard Weber uses loopers to good effect on his upright stuff.

I'd imagine you'd get some great clean and woolly speaker response from that. Hope it turns out ok.

Roland CM 30 Quite pokey for bass, and mounts on a mic stand.

FWIW, speaker size doesn't really matter, I've seen DB's used with all sorts, from 2 x 15's to 16 x 5's, all can be made to sound good. Problem is that for a £200 budget, you won't get modern lightweight speakers to get enough volume for heavy rockabilly / punkabilly gigs. I know they're 'heavy', but my money would be on an old Trace Elliott, either a 4x10 or 1x15 combo, with bags of power to spare.

Take the frets out! On a more serious note... if the instrument is perfectly in tune at the 12th fret (fretted note and harmonic), there shouldn't be a noticable problem higher up. It suggests either your instrument needs the set-up (bridge saddles) adjusting, or there is something seriously wrong. I've never had problems with intonation above the 12th fret. What strings are you using?

Sounds like a good idea to start a DB luthier thread. Useful to list them by area also. I've been using one near Peterborough for set-ups and the like with good results.

For a more contemporary example, check out Imelda May. Her bassist is a fantastic slap player.

I believe that original S1 pickups have 2 wires from each coil, to enable these to be switched (parallel/series).
