1. Judging by the other strings (E & A), there appears to be a definite 'kink' where these run across the nut slot. To me it looks like the nut needs some attention. As you say, bit difficult to see from the photo, however, unless you know how to shape a DB nut, I suggest speaking to some local repairers / luthiers first. Shaping a nut shouldn't be more than around £20 - £25 and will definitely be cheaper than breaking strings.
2. If you're changing string gauge it would be worth it IMO.
3. It can be frustrating getting to grips with your first DB. The strings breaking above where they cross the nut could be down to a weak string (due to excessive / repeated bending) or a badly cut nut. I would recommend you consult a DB luthier or someone who specialises in setting up DB's as it may cost you more in the long run through trial and error. Some specialists are very friendly and might be happy to look at the instrument for free.
4. You're welcome. I'm using these for some rockabilly / slap type stuff. I like 'em
5. Hi there, they are Rotosounds RS4000
6. Just waiting for a 'super-Ray'
7. I suppose 'super-Jazz' sounds more super than 'super-P'.
8. I'd like to know where F3nd3r got the name 'Jazz' from, because AFAIK it doesn't have anything to do with the genre of music or was aimed at that market . The 'Precision' name has been explained. Maybe the 'Jazz' should thus be great for playing lot's of scales over chord changes and the 'Precision' more suitable for root note stuff .
9. Bump for a great cab. Will this come with the 'thick' PJB speakon cable?
10. Sold pending the usual.
11. Thanks mrtcat. Replied.
12. Great idea Beer of the Bass. Anyone know a good place to get the Vox style replacement grill / speaker cloth?
13. Continuing the 'reso mood', herewith a few more shots:
14. Thank you for your kind words ref my ad Mr Monk, much appreciated. Just because it's a 'budget' bass doesn't mean it doesn't deserve a good ad . B U M P
15.
Is that a Dimarzio Model One pickup in there?
Indeed it is.
16. My pleasure. Hope you find 'the one'.
17. I also thought the deluxe jazz has a pre-amp as standard. Anyway, IMO any Jazz Bass with the right set-up is suitable for slap. You don't need a built in pre-amp, you could use an external unit, such as a Sadowsky (others are available ). It largely depends what you look for in a bass and what type of feel and sound you're after. If the MM Jazz suits you and fits the bill as far as sound is concerned, go for it. I like to tweak stuff and am in the process of gathering bits for a 'bitsa' Jazz. It also depends on your slap style, your required string action and the type of strings you prefer using. Try as many basses as you can and you should find the answer . Good luck with the search.
18. You can indeed. It's a National WB.
19. Nice resonator. As I was in a 'reso' kinda mood, I thought I'd show you mine:
20. Yamaha 5-string BBN5 in 'natural' stain with 24 fret rosewood fingerboard. Serial number MX23147. The bass is all original except for the brass nut. This bass will be supplied without a case or gig bag. The bass is a passive design with Vol / Vol / Tone controls and single coil J-type pickups. It has had a complete set up and the neck is straight and clean. The price will include delivery / meeting up within a 60 mile radius from Peterborough. Alternatively, buyer could collect for a reduced price . The bass in question: Close-ups: Some details of general 'wear' and 'ageing': The tone knob has suffered a bash at some time, thus the plastic knob itself is damaged. The tone control is still fully functional. Action at the 24th fret is about 6mm for the B-string and 5mm for the G-string. Hit me with some offers...
21. I always associated Louis E (thunder thumbs) Johnson with a 'typical' MM sound
22. I'm using TI flats on a resonator FWIW, which give the best combination of acoustic output and electric thump IMO for that instrument. I did also like standard (light gauge) roundwounds which gave it a good acoustic volume and a good amplified sound. I found the black nylons too low output, possibly due to the configuration of the bass (being a resonator).
23. I use an Acoutic Image Clarus head with PJB cabs for both DB and electric and am very chuffed with that set-up. The AI heads/combos are some of the lightest around (I presume you meant light as in 'low weight', rather than to illuminate the front panel ). Acoustic Image gear is expensive but sometimes secondhand items appear on BC. If you're going to be using it for a long time it's worth it IMO.
24. I disagree, the Basscentre are worse..
