Hey all, I've been asked to play in a band that plays the music of Yellowjackets. I've aways known OF Yellowjackets but have never been in to them. Can anyone recommend a sort of 5 album list that I should go out and buy to sink my teeth in to them over the next few weeks before I receive any sort of charts for the music and so I don't seem like a total plonker on the first rehearsal. Cheers in advance!

Nah, if you're playing 70 gigs a year which include weddings and functions, there should be a band 'kitty' or 'petty cash fund'. My function band puts aside 10% roughly of income of weddings and function gigs. This is put towards travel expenses, a newly bought PA system, any hotels that need to be stayed in at gigs far away, dinner etc etc etc. The band looks after the players well in other words. However, if this isn't happening just now - You should definitely put that to the band, if enough cash passes through hands. I'd recommend each of you putting up cash for the new PA, equally, and the band introducing a kitty and when there is enough money in the kitty, each player is reimbursed for the PA. This PA is now owned by 'the band' and no one person meaning that if anyone leaves the band, the band owes you nothing. Likewise, if any equipment is sold, it's then income to the band's kitty. Try to introduce a band kitty. It's a good way of the band looking after you.

In fact (on a second listen and the realisation my excitement of finding a BAAM on Basschat got the better of me), sounding really good. Nice tone.

Craig! Totally unrelated to your post (sounding good btw!) But after a wee stroll around your Soundcloud, I couldn't help but notice you had BA Applied Music Big Band on there. Clearly not their current Big Band. Were you a BAAM? When did you study? Who beside? I've just completed the course, awaiting graduation. My recital was last week. Scary, unemployed times ahead! It really is true that you can't turn a corner without bumping in to a BAAM!
RE dings, there's three types for me, buckle rash on the back is great, proves you play it, chips on the front of the body, painful but heals, any damage to the neck is unacceptable, I've had necks repairs because they had tiny amounts of damage. I've not bought instruments because the neck was dinged, even one. Oh I forgot tarnished hardware, I like that too.
I have a ding in the neck of my jazz bass. It happened in the house. Whilst I was putting another bass away, it brushed the neck of my jazz and resulted in a ding. In my eyes, unavoidable, and part of 'wear and tear'. I also have a ding on the fingerboard of my Stingray due to something else knocking it in the house. Both great tragedies but both unavoidable - Though, neither affecting the playability of either instrument - And neither happened out gigging at thrash metal gigs in rowdy pubs either to those whom believe that the state of instruments have something to do with the type of music you play in whatever venue.

Music is a language. As musicians, we need instruments to speak the language just as in spoken and written language, we need voices and writing devices such as pens, pencils, typewriters, keyboards to convey thoughts and opinion. In our case here, our bass guitars are these devices which help us speak and give us a voice in the language of music. In my bass bag, I carry a pencil. The pencil cost me £8. I use this to mark parts etc and make sure I never lose it and am extremely careful who I lend it to on rehearsals. I'd be devastated at losing my £8 pencil. Why am I telling you of my £8 pencil? Because over the years, I've lost a TON of pencils at rehearsals etc and didn't think twice about these cheap pencils that I'd lose - It was more the inconvenience of turning up to rehearsals with no pencil because I didn't look after the cheap ones. So, after 18 months, I still have my £8 pencil. Now, back to bass guitars. I think we all have a bass guitar that we've saved for for a while and love to bits and though we buy new ones, trade and sell them, they're all very important things in our lives - So why not look after them? Dents/dings are inevitable, yes but we should all respect them. Yeah, we all play pub gigs and gigs where our basses may get a bit more tattered than on other gigs, but is this really going to dictate how bashed we let our instruments get or dictate to us that we need an inferior bass to play on these gigs? It wouldn't for me. So from this, I'd say, rethink your rehearsal pencil.

You could ask the MD for some MIDI recordings or seek out MIDI recordings? If you or anyone you know has access to Logic (and POSSIBLY Sibelius - I'm not well versed with that though!), you can put the MIDIs in to Logic and it'll give you a full score of it at the click of a button. That's the best I can come up with if it's a possibility for you.

Just bought Gwilym's Fretless Sandberg 6. Beautiful bass, beautiful price - Top man to do deal with. Brilliant comms. Smooth as you like! Thanks man!
The smelling will be moisture trapped somewhere, neck pocket, under the plate, need it all apart to dry properly. I have to sort a bass played by a dude sweaty enough that it had pooled under the scratchplate, whole thing smelled like armpit, was gross, and all the shielding foil had corroded away.
That's quite disgusting.

Yip. Tone is more how YOU play. I think you're just disappointed that Laguna didn't come with your bass

Easy all, A few months ago my band, Freddie Goes To Mercury recorded our debut EP, "Rocket Science EP". It can be listened to here: http://soundcloud.com/freddiegoestomercury It won't be everyone's cup of tea and it's a bit Scottish if anyone has aversions towards that. We do feature some some wee trumpet lines though. Bass was recorded through SansAmp BDDI and another signal just straight from the bass. No amps. Comments and opinions are welcomed and appreciated.
+1 Its been around for years, great stuff. Garry
Yip, another +1 for Slap It here. It's more chop building and see what you can do with it than being flashy. -

Cheers for your kind words Louis. I can send you the tranny for that Jaco line. Took me about 2 weeks to get it to that level. It's still not perfect there but it's much tighter now. And aye, I mean, for playing with cover bands or just general bands, I never learn note for note lines. There's no point BUT I'm in my 4th year at uni studying music and have an important 40 minute performance recital in May. I'd like some things to be note for note for that, for example, that Jaco line.

... What actually happens at a bass bash? But aye, being from Lanarkshire, Moffat is a much safer option for me than Perth kinda way to be honest. First 'weekend' in February? That'd be a 2 day event then? I'm otherwise engaged the Saturday of that weekend but I'd love to attend if it's still happening on the Sunday!
