Getting paid to play bass is a terrible job. 1. You can be a session musician but you might be asked to play with one of those dreadful bands that appear on 'Later'. 2. You can play weddings or cruise ships but you'll have to play things like 'Eye of the Tiger' or something by Coldplay. 3. You can teach but you feel suicidal after the first month. Get a proper job.
Man, I'd much rather be a session musician and play with a dreadful band that appears on 'Later' or play weddings or cruise ships and play 'Eye of the Tiger' or Coldplay and I'd rather teach (some pupils over others) - Than work at a desk and feel someone else's whip at my back. No thanks.
You can afford holidays & fast cars on £800 - 1000 a month? I'm moving to Glasgow!
No, I can't afford these luxuries on £800 - £1,000 a month but I earn double that during the summer and can afford holidays & fast cars. I just want to live during the winter.
Pro shows - you can earn between £600/£1,000 pw [company dependent], or course ex's on top of that to take off. Not the gig for everyone, but on the plus side you can dep out and do other stuff. Even a Full on Panto for a few weeks over the winter/xmas period can earn you between £400/£600.00 pw, again depending on the company you work for. All hard work but worth it, and you get to meet plenty of Musicians and MD's. Garry
Currently looking in to pantos. Thanks bud.

What are you listening to right now?

Daft Punk - Get Lucky. I've not stopped since I first heard it. The whole album is great. -
How much money do you want to make? Beer money? Or enough so you don't have to have another source of income?
During the summer (April - September) I make enough so I don't need to work elsewhere, can afford a few luxuries like holidays, fast cars and beer. I'd like to keep this up through the winter too though (minus the holidays! - And maybe slow cars. The roads are dangerous in winer after all!). Realistically, £800 - £1,000 per month.

Hey guys, I've just looked at my diary for the Winter 2013/2014 and it is awfully quiet. I make most of my money playing in a wedding band which is great throughout the summer but not so much through the Winter - Which makes the Winter an even more depressing time! I was just wondering how any of you pros out there earn cash other than playing weddings? Paid gigs around Glasgow are hard to come by. I have NO idea how to get in to session work, though would love to - And musicals is always an option for me too - Just contact a few MDs. How else do you guys get work? All help would be appreciated. Cheers!

Hey guys, I've had a really cheap (£300) bass for a while now and am only now starting to play it a lot more. I'm a member of a Studio Orchestra who play a range of things from show tunes to pieces for string ensemble from the classical repertoire to backing pop singers. The other bass players there get much nicer sounds out of their basses than I do - I understand their basses will be "better" than mine and what not. I also play jazz on the bass so would preferably not like to go for strings that are wholly for arco playing. I'm looking to get a better sound out of my bass by maybe changing my strings, bow, and/or rosin. The strings, bow and rosin that I'm using all came with the bass which was new for £300, which I understand to be an extremely cheap price to pay for a bass and with these things, you get what you pay for. I'm looking to spend a bit of money on these things to hopefully improve the bass until I can afford a whole new bass. I should also add - I don't really know much about bows, strings or rosin so any help would be grateful. Thanks in advance.

GuyCee. I wonder if anyone remembers him. He had a channel in about 2006 but removed it, along with all his videos. a great shame. He's never returned. I've never known why!

Hey all, It's been a while for me around these parts. Some other stuff got in the road in my life and I wasn't bassing or basschatting for a while but hopefully be back to both for a long while. I thought I'd reintroduce myself with a simple cover. I'm gonna try and record one video cover per week. The audio is not bad at all considering it's all just camera mic. http://youtu.be/gJaNBUsSBtA Enjoy!

Thanks a lot for your feedback man (I just noticed someone had responded! Haha!). It's much appreciated. The artwork was done by a friend but does us extremely well. But who's interested in artwork in this age of the digital download (I most certainly am btw!) These songs are all over a year old now and we have a lot of new material which we hope to record before the summer. Unfortunately, our vocalist isn't a vocalist as such. He's much more of a songwriter and guitarist but does his best with the vocals. But aye, cheers for the feedback.

How has your day been as a bassist?
AndyBob09 replied to charliethornton's topic in General Discussion
As a bassist, my day's been awful. Haven't put a thought to bass at all. Tomorrow will probably be the same. I never do these days. It's such a damn shame I gig lots and never practice. New Year's resolution? Why not! -
I'd love to jump on a ship in 2013. I need to shed hard at the start of 2013 and will apply in the summer to be a member of the show bands. The hardest part for me will be shedding hard to prep for an audition.

Had a wedding last night which was a dream. We didn't start until 9pm (it's usually 8) because the meals ran on and the venue took their time turning the room around for us then at the break the groom paid us. I took the envelope and divided the money between us - only to find that we'd been overpaid a considerable amount. I took it back to the groom and told him that we'd been overpaid and to that he asked if we could play til one. I told him that we're only contracted til 12 and were only expecting to play til 12 and would rather give him back the money he'd overpaid us. To that he told us it'd be totally fine to play til 12 and to keep the money. I literally hugged him. Oh, and our usual drummer wasn't there. We had a dep in who was a DREAM. His feel was just in the pocket at all times. Great gig, great wedding, great people, great dep, great over-payment. Nice!

I bought a Fender Precision '51 RI MIJ from Gary. Utter stand up guy. Great chat on him - Flawless transaction. I'd deal with him again in a flash! Oh, and the bass isn't bad either! Thanks!
