Please help me fix a route on my bass?
alyctes replied to DawnPatrol1990's topic in Repairs and Technical
I suppose the other thing would be to get a preamp/pickup set which needed 18 volts - which would need a two-battery route, which would be bigger, which would obliterate the evidence of this foulup. -
After my initial shock has worn off somewhat... It's very 80s - though there are similar Italian designs from the 60s, IIRC. I wonder what it weighs - that extra upper bout (?) has to add to the weight. I suspect that doesn't actually do much except add weight and look, um, "different" seems the least controversial word - so I don't know whether I'd bother, even if I could afford it.

Ouch... That's no help, I know. But good luck! -
These are better than their price suggests, IMO. One of my guitarists has one of these (now working properly since I had a go at it ). It would make a good starter, project or backup bass - I might have learned to love P necks if I'd got used to one of these when I was first [s]playing[/s] making a noise with a bass.

P-bass body requiring finishing. A partly-shaped but unfinished P-style body with a nicely figured top - possibly bubinga? £30 plus carriage. Some things which should be noted: - The routing for the controls is quite large (and crude); it won't fit a Fender P pickguard. - The bridge holes are not positioned exactly square and would need adjustment - probably filling and redrilling? - One of the pickup mount holes has come through from the front. It's approximately 4mm diameter. looks to be 4mm or so. I've shown this in one of the pics. (Don't look at me, the previous owner done it guv...) Bass Collection SGC Nanyo SB301. P/J passive four-string, black. Nut is 39mm wide; weight is 3.1kg (6.9lb in old money). This is not labelled as Made In Japan, and therefore is probably from the pre-production series made in Korea when BC were moving production out of Japan. It has a few minor bumps and dings, but nothing nasty. The main issue with it is that the trussrod is maxed out. This may be fixable, but I haven't the skills or the time. The action is rather high as a result. Possibly related, the fingerboard/neck joint is a little too prominent, near the nut. This is stable (I've had the bass since March 2012), but I've not moved the trussrod in this time. Overall, I think it needs attention from someone who knows what they're doing. Thus, sold as a project. There is a whisper on two of the pots when they are moved (not a crackle). It comes with a cheapo gig bag; it will be decently packed, or delivered if it can be arranged (I'm in east Dorset). Erm, I ticked two boxes in the poll... (No I wouldn't.)

Got one. It's noisy. (Anyone detecting a pattern here?) I haven't done anything about it yet (I have too many basses already). Shielding was my next move, but if it's not terribly effective to do that, do we know why? I'm considering stringing it ADGC, because I've found the E string "flabby". I'm curious to know what strings other people are using? Thanks

Me too - if it was mine, I'd be going for a clear finish. Not sure if I'd leave the headstock as is

If you can rig something up so that you can get contact on the mastoid (contact with the bone behind the ear, like an old-style hearing aid), that will go a long way towards hearing it enough to practice, even if it's muted.

SOLD Ibanez SRF700 Portamento Fretless Bass *£350*

I reckon you need a wide-angle lens

The three-string is interesting. Though I doubt I would buy one; four strings seems a comfortable number with a useful range of pitches.
-
What have I bought? A one off? A small run Burns?

Looks nice - and white isn't my colour -
Aluminium-necked five-string. Never heard of this maker, so I'm curious. Does anyone know about them? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rare-Vaccaro-X-Ray-V2-5-string-bass-Kramer-1998-2002-Aluminium- neck-/252533460042?hash=item3acc2acc4a:g:uRIAAOSw9IpX0-b6
Piccolo bass works certainly. I often string up my fretted and fretless basses with thin strings. My basses are 34" or 35" a short scale is not at all necessary. It's simply a case of finding thin strings long enough, and choosing the right gauges to keep the tension low. Tension must be low for very thin roundwounds or thin plains to not break them. But the lower strings need more tension, so the optimum is tension falling steadily from low to high. This also turns out to be optimum for chording, tapping, bending and other alternative techniques, and best for general playability. Kalium Strings of USA have a huge range of piccolo sets in any string count, and bass length singles down to .008. But postage is expensive. Much cheaper is to buy D'Addario 'loop end' plain steel strings, which are extremely long, and improvise ball ends for them (or even squeeze old bass ball ends into the loop). I buy mine from Strings Direct. Then use those beside standard bass wound singles down to .025 or so. For the tuner post nearest the nut some guitar strings are long enough, just thread an old bass ball end onto one. To design a set the Kalium tension chart is very useful as it covers all scales, all gauges and a complete pitch range, the data roughly approximates any brand of roundwound. http://store.kaliums...ator/index.html Soon i will be stringing up a 5 string fretless with a mix of D'Addario Chromes bass flats, a Chromes guitar flat and a plain steel string.
Very useful, thank you
