1. This is a pink 'Phil Pro' P-bass. It's a Chinese-made P-bass knockoff, badged 'Phil Pro' (according to the sale post, Phil has now quit importing guitars). It was bought new via eBay a couple of years ago, and has never been gigged, or even played much. It's new enough that the plastic protective layer is still on the scratchplate. Neck is a comfortable satin-finished P-style; nut is 42mm wide. Truss rod turns smoothly - it takes a 4mm key. Frets are fine - better than the J+D neck I have on a bitsa. Electrics work well. The finish is not perfect - there are minor flaws in paint and body - but the colour is more even than the Westfields I've had. It's not everyone's ideal colour, of course Weight is 4kg according to digital fishing-type scales. More pics: http://s1295.photobu.../?sort=3&page=1 It would be fine as a backup, or for a starter, or as a base for a project. £100 plus shipping.
2. This sort of thing seems a bit pointless to me. How close does the audience have to be to see it?
3.
Billy Sheehan. And I think it was 20 years (yay), but I could be wrong. Edit... my OCD drove me to find the quote, I think it's actually someone's sig on here. Questioner: How come you never play a 5 or 6 stringer Billy? Billy Sheehan: "I dont need one, I have my hipshot for lower notes, and I can go to harmonics for higher notes" Questioner: "do you own any"? Billy Sheehan: " yes I have two or three, though rarely use them outside an ocassional studio set piece" "I dont like to use them unless I really have to, as when a guy takes a 5 or 6 string bass into the studio, you see the engineers and producers, sighing and shaking their heads" (Smiles) Billy Sheehan: " I have nothing whatseover against 5 or 6 string basses. I just belive that guys dont give themselves a proper chance on the 4 stringer first." Questioner: How long is 'a proper chance'? Billy Sheehan: " At least 20 years" (not smiling here, being serious)
It is or was someone's sig here. I can't remember who though.
4. Not too bad, given there were only two of us performing - main guitar is on holiday. Small audience in a smaller venue - mostly ladies of a certain age. I didn't distinguish myself - though having someone else reducing my level in the mix didn't help me (it may have helped the audience, I suppose).
5. Apparently an import from Japan - a new make to me (not that that means much). https://www.gumtree.com/p/guitar-instrument/bossa-5-string-bass-ujb-5-right-handed-rare-bag-included/1155577566
6. The metal colour is right for aluminium. Given they don't line up with the end of the metal body section properly, I wonder if the two body halves are replacements?
7.
The wear seems a bit strange to me but I can't quite put my finger on it. I don't know a lot about them so most probably fine, definitely not for me though.
It looks too hard-edged to me to be play wear. I have a suspicion the wear is deliberate, sort of - it looks as if someone has chipped it accidentally, then found that the finish will come off if you pick at it - maybe with a scraper. Look at the way the wear pattern is parallel, perpendicular to the neck.
8. Tasty. Though I am just a leetle put off by the US$556 import charge...
9. I like that. Shame about the headstock shape, but that could be corrected.
10. I think it's ugly and pointless, but who ever lost money by underestimating the taste of the punters?
11. I guess it makes sense to have it headless. The neck dive from eight tuners... m hm.
12. Can anyone tell me whether there is a specific type of foam used for guitar stands? I need to patch up a stand, and I don't want to risk using something which will react badly with the finish. Thanks in advance
13.
I think that's why the headstock's squared off: if it'd have been pointed, you'd be digging it out of the floor every five minutes...
Never mind the floor, what about the player's foot... !
14. I thought I'd done well to get mine for £50... Buyer beware, but really, if these work properly, then they're a steal.
15. Bridge for a Marathon... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shergold-Marathon-Bass-Bridge-Original-UK-1970a-/141903311502?hash=item210a18b28e:g:gjkAAOSwQYZWv8G2
16. Rob bought a neck from me. All went well and I'd be happy to deal with him again. Thanks Rob
