1.
That was my main point. I agree wholeheartedly that Scruton makes some bizarre judgments but I do also think he makes some good points. I particularly liked the line about our fear of silence: 'Silence must be excluded at all cost, since it awakens you to the emptiness that looms on the edge of modern life, threatening to confront you with the dreadful truth, that you have nothing whatever to say.'
Mr Scruton will always believe he has something to say.
 2. I like Status Hotwires. But they do cost more than nothing
 3. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hawkwood-Handmade-5-string-Bass-Guitar-/281857144274?hash=item419ffeb5d2:g:0~sAAOSweuxWR66Z I don't know anything about these, but the Ibanez "inexpensive" fan-fret (SRFF models) seem to run about £700 new. So a start price of £300 on a Hawkwood might be quite good.
 4. An Ashbory might be better for travelling? Less bulky and less fragile.
 5. My Yamaha BEX 4 is no louder than a solid-body, IMO.
 6.
I did give a Dean Markley bass-amp that I was no longer using to an ex-student of mine recently. Does that count?
Probably Even if it doesn't, I applaud anyway.
 7.
A lot of semi acoustics are short scale. The. Epiphone Jack Casady is 34" the same as yours so I reckon that's a good place to start. I found the Jack Casady case dimensions on the net. If yours matches , then the case should be good. lower bout - 16.5" upper bout - 12.5" middle (hips) width - 10" body length (bottom to hips) - 13" body length (hips to top) - 8" overall length - 50.5"
Apologies for somehow missing this. That would be a decent fit - if anything slightly over size. Thank you very much
 8.

Gibson TR spanner arrived yesterday. Perfect fit. Thank you
 9. I like it, but I can't possibly afford it.
 10.
Bad news on that Antoria I bought, the neck was pretty badly warped on proper inspection, and the truss rod went after I took the adjusting nut off, just spins inside the neck now. real shame.
Bad luck
 11. Joni Mitchell - Hejira. New buy. Not sure about it.
 12.
Warwick do have a case specially for their Star Bass Semi-Acoustic. I have one. It's not particularly small or light, but it offers excellent protection.
Thank you; I will look again.
 13.
Ah, sorry, they've always looked deeper than that in pictures.
They are tricky little devils
 14. There are definitely some overpriced ones out there at the moment.
 15. "There are no flaws on the body whatsoever..." Not so sure about that, TBH
 16. I guess the Burns is the same as in Ormston-Burns, but beyond that... pretty radical shape for 1959 I think! Might be too early for a truss rod? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/burns-weill-bass-guitar-/262135542040?hash=item3d087ef118:g:E2AAAOSwhcJWQNjq
 17.
You could visit a shop that stocks Casady bass and try your bass in the case.
I'll be trying that. Thanks There's probably somewhere in Bristol or Southampton.
 18.
For that bass aren't you going to need a full size acoustic bass guitar case, rather than the semi-acoustic styles that have been suggested? http://www.amazon.co...r/dp/B005F40M1I
I don't think so. The body is less than 6cm deep (front to back), so the 16- or 18cm acoustic cases look to me as if the bass will not be properly supported. I may yet have to go that route and build a (removable) false bottom in an acoustic case, but that's a lot of work for a case which is going to take up more space than I can spare.
 19. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hohner-The-Jack-Headless-Bass-Guitar-with-Hiscox-Liteflite-Case-/111819359753?hash=item1a08f40609:g:f2EAAOSw5VFWP38o With a hard case. Bromsgrove. £250 start bid.
