Model-makers' styrene sheet? Available in various thicknesses; BITD I remember it in thicknesses from 5 thou up to 60 thou (about 1.5mm). 5-thou is thin enough to bend almost like paper. And you could build up a laminate from pieces of 5 thou, if you wanted a wedge; use liquid styrene cement (from a bottle not a tube - apply with a brush) to fix the shimming pieces together. (I have NOT tried this! In particular, liquid styrene cement might damage body finishes, if spilt. So, YMMV.)
OK . . . any thoughts much appreciated . . . . . . . Just measured up my PBass up . . . . the neck pocket is approximately 95mm long . . . . and the scale length, nut to bridge saddles, is approx 865mm long. So by calculation we can deduce the following:- Assuming the shim is a wedge triangle tappered from 1mm to Zero within the neck pocket, then, (by the maths of similar triangles) assuming also that we maintain the relative action height of the strings relative to the fretboard, then, that wedge shim, of 1mm thickness, will raise (or lower - depending which way round you introduce it) the strings 9.1mm from the saddles at the bridge. This means that for every 1mm increase/decrease of clearance over the saddles that you wish to achieve at the bridge by the introduction of a shim, then, your shim wedge triangle taper needs to be approx 0.11mm thick at its fat end - privded that your neck pocket is about 95mm long to achieve that relative string height change of 1mm. If your neck pocket is different to my PBass then the ratios change obviosly. Funny thing about all this is though . . . . I still dont really have a clue what type/thickness of card shim material would be 0.1 or 0.2 or 0.3mm thick. For my project, I need to raise my strings about 2 to 3mm over the bridge . . which means I need a shim wedge somewhere between about 0.22 and 0.33mm thick ? . . . I woudn't have the slightest idea how thick a business card is and I've got no way of measuring one ! . . so I still dont exactly know what to use for my shim ! . . . ha . . All that work and not really much further forward ! ! ! . .
I bought PaulKing's mangled Ormston-Burns upright from him (not mangled by him, I should note). Excellent bloke, lots of thoughtful and helpful comments. Good comms, good packaging carefully labelled. A star.

passive 5-string by Enigma - anyone know anything?
alyctes replied to alyctes's topic in Bass Guitars
Any chance of pics? Im no help but Im curious
Not very likely, unless I buy it... Unfortunately, if I explain to them what its actual resale value is (which is probably £150 tops, given this has to be a no-name knockoff), I'll then not be able to buy it, because they will not be impressed. What's happened here is that Teenage Sprog has prevailed on Parent to buy the thing to do GCSE Music with, then lost interest and decided to do a different course. Parent is now trying to recoup the cost. Sprog might yet actually learn to play, if left alone, but I suspect Parent is quite annoyed and has decided that Sprog can buy guitars with Sprog's own money. I have some sympathy with this position Just to add confusion to the mix, the bass is being advertised under false pretences, as something it isn't. I'm not quite sure why, but the no-name probably has a lot to do with it. -
Hi folks I've been offered a passive, neck-through five-string, decently made, stamped 'Enigma' on the headstock; pups are two big humbuckers. No visible serial number, no model number. I've tried several web searches, and found pretty much nothing - a few copies of other designs (Precision, Strat, SG). The owner wants £250 for it, and claims it cost £350. I think it's probably a good deal, but I also think it would have zero resale value. So I'm a bit wary of it. Does anyone know anything about these?

I asked on the Ashbory forum at LargeSound, and it appears this is a real one.

I also bought an MM-type pup. Quick, well packaged, decent communications. A nice transaction - I wouldn't hesitate to buy from Dave again.

wiring diagram for a Peavey Cirrus BXP 4-string, please
alyctes replied to alyctes's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thank you very much! It hadn't occurred to me to try Peavey themselves. -
Hi folks Can anyone point me to a wiring diagram for a Cirrus BXP, please? Mine is eating batteries, and I've heard interesting stories about some of them coming from the factory miswired, so I'm reluctant to just accept that it's correct as it is. Thanks! (No, I don't know why I posted this in the Wanted section either. Senior moment, I guess.)

I bought his singlecut rework of a trashed Hofner. Good communications, lots of photos, good explanation of issues. Superb packing for transit. A nice guy and I would be very happy to deal with him again. Thanks Keith!

Thank you both, much appreciated. I can't move one of them at all, but the other definitely opens. I think I'd better glue it. It has other issues - missing nut holding the three-way switch, woodscrews and washers holding the strap (!!) (those went ASAP, but I will probably have to plug and drill the body to put sensible strap pins on), a nasty crackle on two of the switch settings, the switch endcap is missing, and quite a few dents bumps and bangs. So I may well wind up stripping it for parts.

I've just acquired a Yamaha BB450, 4-string, bolt-on neck held by four screws. There are cracks in the wood of the body from both the screws at the neck (open) end of the pocket. I've removed the neck to have a look, and it's definitely cracks in the wood, not just the lacquer. The bloke I got it from bought it sight unseen from eBay a few years back - my guess is that it was dropped or stressed badly in transit, since I can't see any obvious sign of a harsh blow to the headstock. How serious an issue is this? It's not something I've seen before. Any comments welcome.

A sensible bloke - he lost a (smallish) sale by pointing out to me, very politely, that I was being stupid.

Bought a Warwick Rockstand from Lozz. Carefully packaged, and evident care taken with nuts bolts washers and screws. Plus, both the Allen key and the spanner (no idea if they're "original", I'm just impressed he knew where they were and sent them Good deal, would definitely deal with again. Cheers!

My second purchase from Cieran (I bought some more strings, one of these days I'll get round to playing them ). All as before; nice guy, good comms and quick shipment. A pleasure to deal with, and would definitely do so again. Cheers!
