Scott just put up a nice video where he compares a couple of P-baases, admitedly one is a lot more expensive than the other. Jump to about 6 mins in if you want to skip the chit chat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YarWwi7gRqI
Thanks! I am just about to trade my Fodera NYC for an Enfield Canon. There is also a bunch of Jazz basses and Precisions in my corner waiting to get some playing time but I need one-does-it-all 4-string for my gigs.
Sounds like the Simms could be just the job for you then. Just out of interest what pickups are in the Canon, the Super 8's?

Hi. I have a Simms Enfield Lionheart with the Super Quads. I would say it gets pretty close to the sound of the basses it's supposed to mimic, but to me it still has a sound all of it's own, some extra character so to speak. It's a great tool , well built and easy to play and gives lot's of tonal options if that's what you are after? Saying all that I still use my P or Jazz when I want that sound or feel. maybe just because I already own them. Great bass still and a keeper for me. Hopefully someone else will chime in.
I've long had a love/hate relationship with fretless bass. I can play one happily for a week, then suddenly want to chuck it out of the window, it sounds so whiney, out of tune, and generally hideous. I dislike most fretless bass playing almost as much as my own - it can sound so lazy and flatulent. The best fretless playing just sounds like a bass - you shouldn't really be able to tell straight away whether it's fretless or not. But I'd never want to be without one. It's a whole load of fun. It should just be very rarely allowed in public.
Sorry I don't get that. I think I can almost always hear a fretless when it's being played in pop /rock music, Mick Karn, Pino, , Levin, It all stands out so wonderfully when they go fretless?
And we haven't even mentioned flats, rounds, fingers, pick, amps, cabs, action, pickups...
Yes, there we go, complicated old affair.

They can and do all sound slightly different to my ear. I have owned quite a few They can range from very warm and woody to harsh and brittle. Depends what you like and what you are going for. The unmistakeable P sound is in ther tho.

I like the feel, touch and sound you get from a fretless, I took mine to practice this week for the first time in a while to try it out with some songs with a newish band, definately worked for some tunes but others I think the fretted sat a bit better. I should play the fretless a lot more as it seems to open up my fretboard a lot more and gives me a feel I don't get with the fretted. Problem is I don't practice enough with it and can that lead to some woeful intonation erros when I listen back
I'm down at Wal towers Friday morning... I'll keep an eye out for it, looks great
Excited for you Rob, is your new build close to being finished?
A true originator, it's not overstating it to say that Chuck Berry sowed the seed from which all guitar-based rock & pop has grown.
Well said. A sad day, I know he wasn't the nicest guy in the music bizz, but sure left a legacy.

brain - fart, sorry.
Anyone got one of these? Had a gig last night and the combo kept going quiet on and off and sometimes no sound at all. The pub had about 20 extension leads on the go so not sure if that had anything to do with it?? Any pointers as to what it could be? Thanks.
Try it without all the extension leads, when you get a chance. Mines been good for a few years now.

I just got the R16 and love it! Using it at practice as a recorder and mixer (out into another mixer) getting fairly good results. Plan to do some demo's on it as well. Easy to use and set up, me like.
I saw the Beatles there in the 60's. Saw. . . didn't hear a note due to the screaming!!
Very cool. Makes me wonder why I only went to see punk and reggae related bands there from the late 70's till early 90's, when there was so much other great music going on! Shame on me.
I was thinking that you meant Corduroy...
Thanks, like them as well.
Nope, but I'd be interested to find out.
The New Mastersounds, where who I was thinking of. Maybe a bit more Jazzy on some tracks. Leeds not Birmingham. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMo8ALy6LSA

Can anyone remember the name of the British( funk) band of late that were fairly minimalistic little bit like Vulfpeck? There was some video's and post on them here at some point, forgotten the name. Bass, Piano, guitar and drums, no vocals from them, except for some guest singers. It's bugging me and like to check them out again. (Might of been from Birmingham)!

We just started doing Brass in Pocket, easy and fun to play, my kind of song

I only started with b/vox about a year ago and can still only do them on certain tunes and rythmns Takes me a bit of brain power trying to make sure I'm roughly in tune and doing all the other stuff properly.. May hat is off to anyone that can carry the main vocals and bass live, Basschat's very own Police Squad included. (fat Sting) lol.
Thought he was a Bass Collection JiveBass man?
I think he mix's around what he plays now after selling his 62 shoreline gold Jazz.

Is anybody getting bored of "reliced" instruments?
Relicing aside, how do these basses get in such a state anyway? Up until I sold it last year, one of my main basses was an Overwater Original made in the mid 80s. From when I bought it in the early 90s until I bought my first Gus some 15 years ago it was getting played at least a hour every day, taken to rehearsals twice a week and gigged every other week. I was careful with it, but never precious. I'm also a pretty "physical" player and energetic performer on stage. It might have picked up a ding or two on the way, but nothing noticeable without a close inspection. In fact the most significant wear was that the chrome plating had started to come off a couple of the machine heads. That's for a bass that was over 30 years old and had been well used for the majority of those years.
I guess a few things could cause wear, extream weather conditions for example, here winter time the weather can be as low as -25, stick your bass in the van outside for a few hours traveling back and forth to gigs, get in there and it gets sweaty hot, I used to have a 70's P that the paint would flake off in the case from I guess extream heat woukd do the same. But I'm with you, I had a Warwick Streamer that I gigged and was my only bass for over 20 years and apart from a few knocks it was a s good as new, saying that it was a natural finish and had no paint on it. -

I love my Roadworn P In fact as a few others have said I personally prefer the feel of a played in bass. As well as not having to worry about putting dinks into your new pride and joy. I do like a new bass as well but I feel it takes me time to give the bass a soul -
Some great chops, touch and groove. Bassrace, love the fast finger style stuff. I feel inspired, but don't think I'm upto it

I'd guess something under £200. Some might pay it some not!
