1. Inspirational for me Done this list before I think . Paul Simmonon Jah Wobble Sting Aston Barret Good old Norman Watt Roy. Foxton, Edwards, Pino, oh boy the list goes on....
2. These are great basses, had mine out last night and it didn't disappoint.
3. I didn't listen to all 6 minutes, but liked what you have done with it.
4. Funny that, I'm fussy as hell about my tone at home or through headphones.
5. Here's the pickup from my 69-70 Precision, that I believe to be origional, if it helps.
6. I have a 69-70 Fender P "F-series" and the Tuners do look different to those. Think mine are Nickel. But then again Fender are known for their inconsistencies.
7. I do like the Dunlop 45-100's in Nickel, get about 8 months out of a set. Good tension for me and decent bit of brightness.
8. I like my jazz, but I seem to be forever twiddling it's knobs Seems to come across better for me on recordings than how it feels playing live. I have played on the same bill as a few guys using jazz's and got what I thought was a great sound, had a peek at their amp settings and was surprised to see a lot of them had cut their mids drastically.
9. Oi Oi Oi ! that's a lot of clank on the bass Catchy song, likey.
10. I'm on the look out for a fretted version of something like that. Be all over it if it was fretted.
11. Hedaman. I'm waiting for the Mothership
12.
Highfox, did you manage to source Velve tune machine heads? One of mine is an odd one and I can't find replacements anywhere. If you have a source, I'd love to know!
Thanks. Unfortunately I didn't manage to source any Velve's , when I took it to my luthier he had a box of old tuners and he just used the ones that matched best. The neck is original and shows signs of wear on close inspection, and being neckthru I'd imagine they would be a pain to try and change.
13.
Thanks Highfox, and congrats on the acquisition. The fretless ones are lovely- does it have an unlined board?
Yes, here "She" is. Had the tuners on the right side replaced with ones that match now. I
14.
I've always done both. It's all music.
Yes, I agree with that. Here in my part of Finland unfortunately it is harder to get gigs if you only do originals, very limited opportunities especially if you only sing in Finnish. Had one band doing only originals in Finnish that I felt we had something, got some radio play, but never really got going 3 years in practice and only 1 gig lol. One of my current projects (talking as an oldie, attracting a mature audience ) we seem to have it covered kind of 50-50 with covers and our own songs, the covers we try to do our own versions of, so the creative freedom is there still. From my experience people like to hear music they are familiar with, to do only originals I think you need to hit a certain niche, style of music that will attract enough punters, it's a hard slog here and boring imo to have to categorise your musical style.
15. Nice. I recently picked up the fretless version, very nice basses. I have left mine with all it's battle scars, it still plays nicely and I think it sounds great. Your's looks like it will a stunner when it's done.
16.
Are you on Facebook? The Wal group there often flags up Wals that come up. I mod it and it's a nice, friendly bunch. The link is here... https://www.facebook...?ref=ts&fref=ts
Thanks Trevor, yes I'am joined recently...
17.
Keep your eye out for a bargain... Just before Christmas I was beaten to a fretted 80s MK1 on gumtree the seller had up for £1200. I believe another BCer got in before me! Aside from that spectacular bargain, used prices seem to be pushing up from £3k...
Cheers Rob. I guess I have to be realistic pricewise. If you spot a fretted MK1 for sale on your travels please drop me a pm .
18. Yes Rob, that is a wait and in all seriousness I think I'd prefer a used one, so would my wallet. At somepoint I see myself having to move on a few basses if I can't hold out. That is a beaut Joe and if it was fretted and more around 3k I'd be going nuts
19. And it doesn't come any worse than wanting to own a Wal again The last one I let go in 88, so it was a while ago! Would mean I'd have to sell off a Vintage Fender and possibly even my pre EB MM, tempted but not sure still. Been trying to ignore the feeling of wanting to own one now for nearly a year. Seems they come up for sale fairly rarely so also toying with the idea of ordering. Anyone else been there?
20.
Trio FTW
Same here and like it
21. off topic! but this thread leads me to wonder "do you need a large ego to be a good musician" ?
22.
https://www.youtube....h?v=JaFa_BVAVOE https://www.youtube....h?v=rA6ZRMAFpxE couple of demos of the basses. I've played them both, incredible tone machines
I've always liked those white slab and maple, maybe one day
23.
High Fox, nobody wants or listens to a live band for 4 hours. However, it's the format for bar bands in the US. Every weekend it's either 9-1 or 8-12 gigs. And 3-7 on Sunday. As mentioned before people go from one bar to another. The 3rd set crowd is usually a completely different crowd than those there for the 1st set. Definately a cultural difference. Blue
Cool, I guess it is a totally different kind of thing. Most of my gigs there is a cover charge to get in, so people tend to stay put once they are in.
24. I don't who would want to listen to 4 hours plus of the same Band, even Springsteen in his prime became a yawnfest after 3 hours lol. Customers must come and go unless they just plant you in the corner with the flowers and just use you for muzak. Some of my favourite bands used to do almighty sets ,The Clash and The Who, but running time was no more than 3 hours.
