Stingray Shootout: Standard VS Classic (video!)
Highfox replied to AngelDust's topic in Bass Guitars
Nice. I think the Classic gets closer to the sound of the pre EB's.. maybe it's just the 2 eq vs 3 eq here. -
It does happen. The Fender Roadworn I bought new had been hanging in the shop for over 5 years, I know because I saw it and played it everytime I went in there. Guess some colours and models just don't appeal to people. I'm not complaining as I got it half price as they were ending their deaslership with Fender If you got a nice bass I wouldn't worry about it.

Very sad. Soundtrack to my youth. I'm sure he lived a full life, another British legend gone.

Stingrays are pretty aggressive. Try turning the vol down on the bass and let the amp work, that works for me sometimes and a softer touch. other than that more speakers and a shared load might help.

Simmo is /was the dogs nutz, not the bussiest of basslines, but all feel and groove (what it's all about for me) Live he was (is) awesome and hardly ever dropped a note and did all that as we know looking supercool slinging his bass -about. My fav by far...
I've got (and very much like) a Bassman TV15. Thinking about the Bassman 500 which I suspect I would like equally but have a potentially daft question which I'll ask anyway.... How much of a trade off is there with going for the cheaper and lighter Rumble cabs (say a 1 X 15 and a 4 X 10) against the impressive looking Neo versions?
I think you'd have to let your own ears decide on that. I use the newer Rumble combo with the 210 extension and couldn't be happier with tone it gives me. I have more expensive gear sitting around that I don't use.

Congrats. Great sounding and cool looking gear.

Crimbo done and dusted yesterday in these parts My Daughter is outside cleaning her car, the wife watching (in peace, as she says) a film, the dog and cats are sleeping and I'm doing my usual window shopping on the net . Happy Holidays everyone.

Sort of.. I was for a long time chasing an ultra low reggae type tone and then later something ultra clean and quite bright that sounded great solo'd but not always that good in the mix. Then I started using a bit more drive firstly with Catlinbread SVT and now with the Darkglass VMT.. just a little break up and more harmonics cut nicely in our 3 piece. A little goes a long way

Sid Vicious - undervalued bass innovator?
However unless it was The Osmonds or the Partridge Family for instance, it would be customary for the bass player to be able to play, unless the bass was to be used as a stage prop. There are several quotes in this thread which are truly hilarious - Bristol Johnny at a time when Philly soul singer Johnny Bristol was riding high in the charts........ and the Led Zeppelin with Albert Steptoe singing is also great .......... However for me, talking about Zeppelin and the Pistols in the same breath is like doing the same with Chopin and Bobby Crush (sorry Bobby) - an outrage. They sounded more like Chris Spedding to me (but with Albert Steptoe singing). You will have guessed I think they were truly sh*te and over hyped by a wicked PR machine - they certainly released a seminal album and did wholesale anarchy before the Young Ones and Bottom - but the latter were actually good!!!! Jaco was far more a punk (though a jazz one) -These guys were vomiting and gobbing yobs first and foremost!!
I think that's exactly the kind of response they were looking for.... even nearly 40 years later. Maybe the social movement (sub culture) the Pistols had with a lot of the youth might be lost on you, they were certainly a voice for the young workingclass at the time. Zeppelin may or may not of connected like that in the late 60's early 70's I don't know about that I'm too young and wasn't there . But I was for the Pistols. The pistols may not of been great musicians but I'd say Lydon's lyrical content is a masterpiece of the times.. not sure Dylan could even get close! Like most things in life you either get it or don't. They changed the whole live music scean in London almost over night.. Maybe form the UK the Beatles were the last group before them to have had that kind of impact. Maybe I'm talking B#llocks, but that's how I (see) saw it. -
Glen Matlock was very good - the recordings on sp**k show that, he was very fluid and did a lot of riffs/runs. Gave a much different feel to the songs than the traditional NMTB that we all know and love.
Lozz is right. I think that may of been part of the reason for them getting rid of Glen, too tight, good and musical lol. Listening back now (after many years) to some of the pistols (old) live performances I'm almost amazed that I didn't notice how much Rottens vocals hold everything together, like it or not he never seemed to forget the lyrics and always gave 100% on delivery. He had pride in what he was doing, could still show a few so called musos's up nowadays. -
I've always understood Steve Jones played the bass parts on the SP records an that SV was just a tailor's dummy for the stage.
I have heard a few inteviews with Steve Jones and he said that Sid can be heard on Bodies and Holidays and that Glen is playing on Anarchy.. the rest of the bass is jones on NMTB. -
He had the look and the attitude for Punk but he could barely play and he admitted to throwing a bottle at a gig which blinded a women in one eye. That's before he escalated to murder. He was really a thug along for the ride - the puppet of McLaren. So.. I recognise the importance of the Sex Pistols but as an artist in his own right... nah. (*Although I did quite like his version of 'My Way' in NMTB... probably the only time he actually appeared on a record - singing or playing)
He sang a few others as well, the solo album Sid Sings (1979) has a few tracks on it. As well as all the live stuff that was reordered and released with Thunders. -
Except in the OP
Oh yes, thanks. I must stop scan reading. I'll add Leigh Gorman.

There are a few.. Paul Simonon, as he hasn't been mentioned yet.

Just to prove he did actually try to play live . As has been said Sid was all about attitude and look, not his playing. -
Lol, it's always the same when these McCartney threads pop-up. Not sure it's a matter of liking or not, You should be mature enough to give talent, credit where it's due, despite of it's genre, you don't have to like it to appreciate what's going on. Personally I never really thought much of him as a bass player because he wasn't out there sticking it in your face.. Many years later I decided to try and work through some of it and gave it a better listen in context of the songs and couldn't help but be blown away I like Skanks Macca more above ...
Good call, some of the nicest playing basses I`ve played - why don`t I have one, wrong colour schemes. I really should just get one anyway as they are awesome players,
Yes you should Big chunky necks with a fat sound that resonates forever and fairly light weight and comfortable also something you don't mind if it gets knocked about. It's my current number 1.

I tell you what, give the Roadworns a try as well..
