1. Welcome. Most of the upgrades I have ever done on my basses have been a waste of time and money, I don't do anything now that doesn't need changing. DI-ing the bass should give you a full sound.. maybe try a preamp first, I usually use a Aguilar tone hammer for shaping when recording For more oomph, you might need that P
2. We sometimes do a couple. easy and fun to play. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoBJXwdn2Jo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Ta5T8cg3c0
3. Looks like who ever owns it couldn't string it properly, the D string is out of the tree Might nice if you have the dosh.
4. I tried a whole range of flats on my Ray before deciding I really did prefer the sound of it with rounds. Came to the same decision on my Jazz. Enjoy the experiment, that's what it's all about.
5. Must of been a one-off.. normally the boys are very tight.
6.
I`d very much doubt it, but then to me that shows how the A&R people were doing their jobs well. Yes the band weren`t musically that hot, but the labels could see that`s what people wanted at the time - credit to them for being interested in bands which they probably privately thought were dreadful.
From my reading and understanding the Clash were still pretty much in debt to CBS until mid 79 when things started to take off for them in the USA. So I guess CBS were along for the long ride. I enjoyed watching the film mainly for the interview's and old footage of London. The Clash certainly had something to say at the time, that's pretty obvious the way Temple could tie in what was happening in the UK/ London climate with the footage and lyrics. Just like the Pistols films.
7. Any one remember Freddy Laker? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ns-fw7a16Gw
8. This one I used to own is close, but no cookie. It had a remarkable amount of lowend as well as all the clank you could need. Edit.. There is a photo of one in the gear porn, Precisions section page 45
9.
I`d check the Fender Rumbles, they have a really nice warm, rich tone to them.
+1 To what Lozz says. I use their 500w 210 combo with and without an extension cab, love it.
10. Awesomeness, I've had my 22 a couple of months now and still can't leave it alone Enjoy.
11. Yes ,you were right Lozz with the humbucks Maybe the Ray sounds larger as it's active/pre-amped already and the rest had no kind of DI boost or anything, tho the Stingray always sounds huge to me isolated with the drums like that, just one of the reasons I have to have one. I think the P with the flats has very low out-put from it's pick-ups, they are 45 years old.. I'm thinking of sticking some of the new F custom shops in there and keeping the old's original. Cameron thanks, it'd be nice if someone had the time to do more bass comparisons, I'd definitely give it a listen.
12. A Jazz or a Ray would be a great choice. As At says get your hands on one of each if you can and see which you prefer for feel. Active /passive can be a deal breaker for some people as well. I'm lucky enough to own both and wouldn't be without.
13. Well done, your both right. Number 3 was also a P but with flats.
14.
Well I`d put 1 as a Precision, and 4 as either a Jazz or a Stingray, with 3 being the treble-cutted bass.
Your close Lozz, what do you make 2 as?
15. (yes I had some freetime today) Four sightly different basses straight into the PC.. Three of them wide open and one with some treble cut, how I'd normally use them at practice etc. Forgive the sloppiness and for anybody who listens I promise I don't slap in public lol. If you want to play, can you tell what's what? https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/90499974/Bass%20mix/1.mp3 https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/90499974/Bass%20mix/2.mp3 https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/90499974/Bass%20mix/3.mp3 https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/90499974/Bass%20mix/4.mp3
16. Main stay for me is a Comp, OD and Envelope filter, if I had to lose one it would be the OD.
17. Bit OT, but I did a stupid thing with mine at a gig at the weekend, accidently put an 18v supply through it, I have 9 and 18 on my psu and in the dark didn't check properly. It's now ferked and I'm now gutted as that was my always on pedal.. Lesson learnt from me I have now colour coded the power tips. (bit late I know)
18. I've had a set my gigging P for about 9 months now and they still have a bit of zing and harmonic on them, haven't felt the need to change them yet.
19. I guess it all depends what kind of tone your after, a little punchier in this vid. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKEHQdONP90
20.
I feel sick. The more I play my new Precision, the more I like it. As the strings lost the initial zing (but still remain bright) the bass just seemed to get in a "zone" that's just... fat and creamy and I love it. I haven't played any other bass (gigs, I mean... at home the others get occasionally some attention) since I bought it nearly two months ago. It wasn't love at first sight... I liked it a lot from the start, yes, but I didn't really start to TRULY love it until a bit later, as I learned how to adapt to its sound. Last night I had a rehearsal, and it was just soooo right, that I realised I was not going to bother with a preamp on this one Yes, I seem to be addicted to onboard preamps, in particular John East's mid-sweep module. I just love how you can tweak the midrange "just so" from the bass. But with this band, the Precision just seems to fit and anything I want I can get from its rudimentary tone control. I normally have the volume fully open, and the tone backed off just a bit... and the ancient and battered Trace Elliot 410 combo that they have in this studio (and that I normally hate) made me smile. Really. Just like that. Admission: ok, it's not just the Precision. I started using the EBS Multicomp compressor that I had stopped bothering to bring to rehearsals. It seems that a tiny touch of compression goes a long way. Only one other bass has made me enjoy playing so much: yup, the Stingray. So what's this talk about Precision or Stingray? OR???? Pah! BOTH!!!!!!!!!!!! But the Precision has been a total surprise to me. I thought I hated it, really did. Now I want another Classic50 to use different strings on. Like I said... I feel sick.
Could be something in it, I hadn't used my Ray for a while and took it to practice yesterday. We have 2 gigs this weekend and the Ray gets the nod I'm with you on the comp, use the same one and it's always with me. Yes you need a Ray a P and a Jazz.
21.
Anyone care to tell me this ISN'T just the bollocks..!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6Wz076V1Fg Classic P... and the reason why I want one...
Nice tunes, Remember to stick some flats on there if your looking for that kind of thump and rounded sound.
22. Thanks for all the info. I was wondering as well. I'm a subscriber and always learn something new from your lessons, even if I'm too lazy to go at it note for note .
23. I'm a little confused by all the above! As has been mentioned a couple of times the bass looks fine apart from the photo of the rear of the headstock? I'm not buying as I already have an 82, but it might help you sell it if you put the right photo's and information up.
