Ok, So sometime after letting my 1977 P bass go, I started lusting for a bit more old P bass action. I wanted a player and not something on the pre CBS price scale, thanks to Basschat's very own Bram I managed to seal a deal on a 69-70 P. It is nice and light weight- 3.6 kg on my scales (that was a major factor in getting rid of my 77 it weighed a bomb and I'd suffer if we had to do a couple of sets a night). It's almost a jazz width neck at the nut maybe an A? So far so good, strung with a new set of flat rotos, off to practice with it today and a gig tomorrow to see how it sounds in the mix. btw, anyone got any tips, the tuners take a good bit of effort to turn and wonder what's best to help loosen them up a bit? We had a Pub gig last night. Not too many in, but those that were in seemed to really enjoy it, lots up dancing and asking where we were playing next. Only 4 gigs I've done with this band, but this was the best so far. I finally learned all the songs and can relax and let rip. I only took a 1x12 and the TH500, sounded sweet slightly over driven

Yes, that looks nice. The finish does look a bit different to the US standards. Is the pup spacing the same? You wouldn't maybe want to be back here now, about 25+ here today

I went from the LaBella 760FL (43/104) to the Fender 9050L (45/100) on my P and they are pretty close in feel imo. Nowt wrong with the LaBella's.. just wanted a change.

[/quote] That was me trying to be sarcastic, as we all know P-basses are used in all types of music, a roll of the tone will do a fair bit... abit like the Rick.. which was the point I was trying to make.

[/quote] I agree, there is a fair bit you can do with them, the newer models even have a vintage/modern circuit on then them, 2 pups, 2 tones controls, stereo feed if you want it, that's just for starters. Just like a good old P and one trick pony.. great sound no matter what you do imo, The only thing the Rick can miss is a bit of clout compared to a P in the very lowend, but the Rick has a lot of sweet mid sounds that you won't get on any other bass. That's how I hear them.

I had a set of the new coating BB's, liked the feel, the only problem I had with them is that they caused some kind of interference and crackle (like a grounding issue) on my basses, tried it on an active Ray and also passive P and Jazz and they did it on all of them, through different amps as well. Not sure if it was down to the coating or what? Nice strings otherwise.

3 out of the 4 Fender Bass's I own have had pick-up changes... 2 Japs and one Usa.

I have found time for 2, it can be a bit of a strain when you have to put one first. The reason I took on another band is that nothing more than practising and the odd gig here and there was happening with my original band! I wanted to be a little more active in playing- live and recording and the other band is a lot more active in those ways.. Tho I'd dare say I much prefer the stuff we do in the band that's less active Strange isn't it!
