1.
OK. It's a J.D. custom four in kinda black... matt black, opaque black, translucent black...
Jesus, that looks awesome and something that Batman might play. Nicest JD I have ever seen!
  2. Huw's on here sometimes. Maybe he'll let you know himself. Very modest bloke.
  3.
My main stage bass is a Japanese Fender - a 54 Precision reish in very fetching 'blue flower'. Brilliant bass for me. I can gig it round the worst toilets in the north and not worry too much about it while my precious lifelong friend Mr 73 Precision stays home safe. They tend to be a lot lighter too - handy for those of us who are long of tooth , grey of follicle and therefore weak of back !!
Spot on! Dave.
  4. Nice one. The MIJ's/CIJ's are great basses as anyone will tell you that's owned or played one. I have 2 and won't let any go.
  5.
Fender Precision, black with black pickguard and maple neck = ultra-cool. Not too keen on black basses with rosewood fret-boards though.
I voted cool, that be the one I bought off you Lozz lol.
  6.
It is getting into dangerous territory to speculate who manufacturers the strings. Here's why: it is not that much of a leap to go from, "Who makes the strings?" to "Same strings." Case in point: there is a huge urban myth on Talk Bass that Fender flats are the same as D'Addario Chromes. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The Fenders are grey, have different width tape wrap, and have a resonant peak at @ 600 Hz., while Chromes have the obvious shiny chrome wide tape wrap and have a resonant peak at @ 200 Hz.
That's interesting, I like hard cold facts. I've tried Chromes and never got on with them..whereas the Fender CL's have hit the spot.
  7. First gig with a new Band last night and.. ..We played 2 sets, nice crowd of live music fans in, all in all good fun. We did a mix of 50/50 of originals and covers Bluesy.
  8.
Steve Harris bought me a pint of Guiness once - Oh yes , like brothers me and my mate Steve !! If it's Iron Maiden beer I expect it'll pretend to be heavier than it is , be consistently average , cost more than it's worth and already be past it's sell by date.
Thanks I enjoyed that Dave I have brewed my own beer at home now for a number of years. Homebrewing has moved on a lot since the old days, you can order all the ingredients you could ever wish for at the click of a mouse. I can brew beer to my own preference with flavour and Alcohol % etc. The bonus is it works out very cheap, just over €1 a litre, knocks the socks off most supermarket beers and would give most craft breweries a run for their money, plus it's great fun to do. Recommend it
  9. I mix and swap a fair bit.. 3 different flavour P basses and a Rick. The Jazz has been left out atm. This week I took the Rick and fretless P. Gig tonight will be the 51 P basses turn .

    What flats?

I now have 5 different basses all strung with different flats... ... after all these years I think I have discovered that getting flats in the right gauge with the right tension has been the key issue for me.. as well as which bass they suit. A complex issue lol. From now on it's Fender 9050 - 45-100 on all my P- type basses that's one thing I have found out. The TI's seem to suit jazz type basses at least in my hands.
  11.
have to push the boundaries sometimes...
That's what the Rickenbacker is for lol. If you like your basses stylised and personalised and really want to stand out those P's would go down a treat I'm sure. nice playing btw.
  12. Sorry Warriorbass, not for me I'm afraid.
  13. More Precision love here. My current 3.
  14.
That ain't no Bob Babbitt unless he changed ethnicity!
I think that was Pierre Brock on the live clip. Babbitt did the studio version as far as I know. edit as a PS, that's the kind of P bass sound I'm after

    Fave guitar solo?

I like my guitar solo's pretty short and simple: A couple of my favs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LgEA5AO-K3U http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTFHXKVQJqc
  16. I remember reading somewhere that Bill found it uncomfortable playing full size basses. Not sure if that's really true or not?
  17.
Well I went for maple purely as I wanted a recent US Standard with both rosewood and maple (as with my back getting worse, I need lighter Precisions than I`ve had previously). Plus I can then, as above, change the maple to look like a 57.
Congrats Lozz. I did think you were cutting down on basses They both sound nice. I'm GAS free
  18.
I had them on my 4 for a while - far too high tension. I've now gone the opposite way and fitted a set of TIs.
I never had that problem with them in the 45-100 guage. Found them a little lower tension than the La Bella 760 FL's ..That I had been using. The Ti's I get on with when I play on my own, but once I'm fired up and playing with the band and I start to dig in the Ti's are way too floopy and farty for me. Wish they made a slightly higher tension set! I'll be getting some more Fender 9050L that's for sure.
  19. Nice one, enjoyed it. Good luck.
  20.
And the bog standard Fender strings are so much better than the old cheesewire that used to pass as strings.
Here here to that, Love the newish flats they are putting out and they seem a steal at the price! I have 4 Fenders in different flavours 2 Jap and 2 Usa. they all needed a setup and a bit of tweaking to get right but once right they are as good as it gets in my book.
  21. Not sure about the Jazz's but.. I just recently had a standard-wind Fralin singlecoil put into my 51 P bass At first I wondered what was going on, playing with the band I had to roll the volume and tone knobs right back on the bass, where with the stock pickup I had both wide open (that's me and P-basses) to achieve roughly the same clarity and bottom end. The Fralin's seem to have a lot more response and are even sounding over the strings and a little smoother with the highs, even tho there are a lot more brittle highs on tap. (almost too much) That's how I have found it on a singlecoil P-bass.
  22. Congrats Murphy. Any chance you can put a clip of her up? Love to hear how it sounds.
