1. I have a very robust finger style so quite a high action and I tend to set the pickups quite low too to avoid clanking. LaBella stainless steels every time, they have the tension I like.
2. Very nice indeed! Is this based on a standard Ibanez model?
3. What are your thoughts on the V2's? I had a pair fail on me almost immediately and the second pair didn't last much longer. Sounded alright but not as good as the V1's! I think they've got the sound of the V1's with the V3's and they've sorted the reliability too.
4. SRM450's are great, go for it! V1 and V3 are best, I think 2014 would be V3. Monitor-wise, have a look at 10" active speakers that can be put on their side. Behringer, Alto, theBox will all be good enough and, new, are like £100-150 each. Just remember to turn the bass down on the EQ to make the vocals pop. You'll probably need to buy new stands within the year if you use them regularly. Might be worth spending a bit more on Quiklok or something instead.
5. +1 Snake oil methinks.
6. Fender Rumbles are great. The 100 may be a bit large for home use but able to cope with rehearsals too. The 40 and 75 are really good!
7. +1 It's a bit of a minefield. Personally I'd just buy a spare (with the money you'd spend on insurance) and hope that nothing goes wrong.
8. Guitarists want heavily coloured tone, bassists not so much. This is why bassist like lots and lots of power because you can reach higher volumes without distortion occurring. This is also why bass speakers are specially built. They can handle a lot more noise before distorting. Guitar speakers will break up at very low volumes. Lots and lots of power ends up being very expensive and heavy which makes it unattractive for obvious reasons. SS and Class D technology means you can get all the clean power without the expense, size or weight of valves. Lots of bassists do like valve tone but I think it's a bit of a niche market now with most amps being vintage and/or second hand. Most large manufacturers do make all valve heads but as you've found out they tend to be at quite a high price point.
9. That is possible the most beautiful finish I've ever seen!
10. Failing that, a Yamaha RBXJM 1 or 2 would be perfect. The JM1's are quite well known for being heavy though. Can be had for less than £400 and are top quality instruments that look a little more 'metul' than the TRBs.
11. Yeah my 100 is easily loud enough for pub gigs. Cuts through like butter! I have finally decided that I really don't like the vintage contour button though. Too boomy at volume.
12. Just bought Beely's Samson mixer off him and the deal couldn't have been easier. Paid the money, got the item a couple of days later! Cheers pal!
13. 87% the speed of light?!
14. But you're happy carrying the RS212 for the rock gigs? Honestly, doesn't need changing. Keep the same rig for everything and use the EQ to make it work. With the am-dram group you can just boost the tube tone a touch and cut the mids slightly. Keep the volume down and jobs a good 'un. No need to spend out on stuff you don't need!
15. Yep! It's a great song
16. Looks to me like he's ripped off Alpher!
17.
I eventually bought 4 black 4-way mains extensions. 2x3m and 2x1m. I'm a great believer in selecting the right length cable for the job when mains is required. Regarding XLR leads I try to do similar. We have two very long ones for active speakers and two very long 1/4" jack-jack for the active monitors. Everything else is 3m. You can always extend XLR by daisy chaining.
Exactly! Only the mons and tops/subs need to be any sort of distance away from the mixer. Everything else should be within 5m away.
18. It's the new black
19. Also, tbh there's as much chance of an analogue mixer failing on you as there is an iPad. Go on YouTube and watch videos of people using it! If you've got the budget, do it!
20. Depped for a band that use the Mackie/iPad mixing desk and it's sick as chips (which is good)! Scrolling through the channels is a breeze, adjusting levels couldn't be easier, parametric EQ's are a doddle. Basically setting levels for anything, be it effects, mixes, volumes, gains etc is so so so easy and the best part is you can operate it wirelessly if you bring a little wireless router with you to gigs. The other party trick is that individual band members can adjust their own monitor mix using the app on their smartphones. It's magic I tells you!
21. Really? Interesting. I do need to get out and try one at least!
22. They look great and I'd love one to use alongside my BB424 but I hate hate hate 2+2 head stocks with a passion! Such a shame
23. It's not as if the note choices are particularly experimental or difficult or even that it's hard to play, technique wise. In places it's seriously sloppy (not a criticism!). But it's his sense of groove and phrasing that makes it an incredible piece of music.
24.
I can't believe that any decent musician doesn't have the ears to realise that the Do Do Do part is in no way connected to bass guitar part which is a standard funky finger-style bass with the occasional slap and pop for accents. If I was in a covers band playing this, to Do Do Do would be handed off to the keyboard player straight away.
Oh, shut up will you? Not all of us have been blessed with the same musical ears and talent as you. I asked a genuine question and, as usual, you denigrate anyone who is struggling with a certain aspect of their technical or musical development with a sarky, patronising and condescending comment. The second part of your post is half-useful. Thank you for the suggestion but we don't have a keys player.
25. Hadn't thought of singing over the line! Will try it this evening. Good to know that some of you don't use effects for it because I really thought I was getting nowhere!
