1. Yeah! My band play Black Coffee....in E!
2. Have you looked at the Yamaha BB424? The 'X' ones (with a scratch plate) nail the vintage looks of a Fender P and can be had for around £200 second hand. Just as good quality and you get the extra flexibility of a bridge pickup too
3. Yeah there's a lot of ladies in Hozier! Two backing vocalists and a keys player. What I especially liked about the band is that everyone sang and the vocal parts sounded massive!
4. Just catching up on iPlayer and these guys have really caught my eye! They've had a couple of hits recently and they look great on the main stage. Amazing band, great backing vocals and interesting arrangements, sound and songs. Interesting bass too. Anyone know what it is?
5. I don't think you have to play rock music to have a rock star lifestyle.
6. Yeah, two combos isn't a great way to get a great sound. How are they connected? Are they both the same? Better to use a combo and add an extension speaker if possible.
7.
...and then screeching unbearably in between songs.
I think that's her talking voice.
8. Hang on, Kanye West, along with other hip-hop giants like Jay-Z, Snoop, Fiddy and Pitbull ARE this generations rock stars. They sell out arenas, have sex with supermodels, crash super cars and drink bottles of champagne worth $1,000 each. Are we also assuming they're all male? Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé have also had their fair share of scandal and are probably as popular as the aforementioned male artists. You guys should read the gossip mags, they really get up to no good!
9.
Yes I saw it featured in BGM recently... I doesn't matter how good it is I'm not walking into a shop and asking to try a pleasure pump...
You haven't lived!
10.
She's ten, guys!!! Give her a break. Buy a cheap black one and let her cover it with stickers!! She has other basses around to compare. If she gets serious, she will find her way. My first guitar was unplayable, had steel strings and two nylon ones. Now look at me. Felixstowe's second best double bass player!!
Normally I'd agree but she's already at Grade 4. She already knows how to play and, obviously she's still learning, but she'll find a cheap instrument hard and unsatisfying to play. Buying a second hand one for around £500 is best bet because it's unlikely you'll lose money on it should she lose interest in the coming years. The G4M one will halve in value the second it's dispatched and then lose even more over the years and you may even struggle to move it on at any price point.
11. I think there's a similar concept used for drummers with a stool that transmits vibrations through the players body while playing. The one guy I've seen use it (The Zombies drummer) raves about it, says he can't live without it!
12. As above, anyone play it live? Interested as to how well it gets recieved because I can see people getting bored with it after the first 4 or 5 minutes. Reason for asking is that we blasted it at rehearsal the other day for shits and giggles and we thought it sounded pretty good but unsure whether to risk it at the local Frog and Twat. I'm in the 'lets play it anyway' camp!
13. Interestingly, it's when I'm gigging regularly that I'm less likely to GAS after things. Gigging regularly at the moment and I don't really fancy anything at all, but four months ago I really had to stop myself from buying a new keyboard and some PA stuff (that I don't need)!
14. In a big booming voice, respond with "YES! GET ON WITH IT!!!!"
15.
Hi guys, sorry, should've mentioned before, I'm a guitar player of 20 years and a bass player of about 6 I know how to play, I know my scales and such it's just I picked this book up as it's more the kind of music I'm playing with my newest band and to get a feel for how others play this style, it's just this notation stuff, thankfully Ive never needed it, until now Sorry for any confusion
In which case I'd recommend learning by ear to get the shapes and rhythms for that kind of playing. Best of luck!
16. Persist with the T-Cut. It'll take a long time to get it back to being completely flat and 'as new'. You say you can just feel some of them? Nothing will repair that unless you want to go down the re-finishing route.
17. Duck Dunn is quite advanced reading. I'd skip for now and find another book which is aimed at more intermediary levelled players. Either way, don't give up! Reading is a very valuable skill to have! Just try not to run before you can walk and don't get bogged down in theory. You don't need to know how music works in order to read it.
18. Why not share microphones a la The Beatles?
19. Yep, turn the bass control right down. Or off. Most amps have the bass frequency control set around 60-100hz and you just don't need it. All it does is muddy everything up, drown out the bass drum and make it harder for everyone to hear what they're doing. It'll take a few goes to get used to it but you'll love it once you realise that you can hear absolutely everything and when people stop asking you to turn down!
20. Have a look at LaBella Super Steps. Will work perfectly! Hopefully you'll like the tone, not as bright as Elites.
21. Waters' lyrics are great. Very memorable for me because he uses interesting words and turns of phrase.
22. A small amount of Danish oil applied every couple of months will build up to a lovely, hard wearing, satin finish. Alternatively, look for some natural beeswax and apply a couple of coats every few months. Similar to oil but over the years you'll get a lovely glassy finish that'll really show off the wood! Every time I change my strings I'll clean the fretboard and frets and apply a coat of beeswax. It's getting really lush and it'll only get better.
23. Can't make it but best of luck and I hope you have a great time!
24. That reminds me, once played a gig in Hayes (West London) on the same night of the second Froch/Groves fight. So we played from 9 til 10.15 and the fight started shortly after. The fight finished at around 11.50 so we played our encores and then packed up!
25.
Or have you back after you 'forced' this on them and get them to pay up. Pubs, by their very nature, are very casual affairs and I wouldn't be going to war for those sums involved. If I felt that strongly, I wouldn't play there again...which might make the chasing of the money worth doing, but for £50 I'd probably get over it pretty quickly. No doubt, it is frustrating tho..
Well, it's less a legally binding contract and more an email that outlines everyone's responsibilities. All they have to do is return it with a confirmation that they've read it and then we all understand exactly what we're expecting from each other. No-ones forcing anyone to do anything. If they don't want to agree to our conditions then I'll look for a gig elsewhere. I'd rather sit at home and watch TV with the wife than pack up the car and drive half an hour to a pub to be told to go home and lose money doing it. I don't think it's unfair to make sure that the venue knows that they need to inform the band if there's a double booking or face paying out some compensation. I know it's a bit overboard and a bit formal but I've been let down many times before and it's a habit I picked up when I was depping regularly. This way, you never lose out. We offer a service and we need to be represented properly.
