1. I keep seeing BBN's turn up for no money at all and I'm really frustrated that I don't like them (aesthetically) at all! Still loving my 424x, it just makes me want to play all the time and it just does everything I want it to do!
2. I've worked for a few bands that use Bigfoot promotions. She's on Facebook, I can't remember her name! She specialises in holiday camp and corporate work. Agencies are fine, but you have to give them something to sell!
3. Fairly. First, you must apply a small amount of black grain filler or you can use black wood stain. Then, sand the wood back to to achieve a pronounced grain effect. Smooth well. Then, apply red wood stain on top and sand back several times. Once you've reached an even coverage of red and you've reached the depth of colour you'd like, you can use a few coats of Danish oil (sanding well between each coat) and then a couple coats of natural beeswax on top (buff well!) to achieve a nice satin finish. Good luck! It's time consuming but easy, yeah.
4. Go with the first band dude. You're learning a lot by playing songs on the fly and the extra cash is handy innit? Earning money is a valuable life skill. You've got the rest of your life to play music that you love! Why not grit your teeth and earn some money while you can. Your missus might not be best happy, but show her that you're developing as a person and earning money so that you can both have a more comfortable life.
5. Don't the landlords in question have ANY balls at all? It's their pub and unless they've signed a mutually exclusive contract with an agent then they should be able to bring in whomever they want to play music.
6. Second hand Boss ME-20B! Can be had for around £60, has all the effects you wanted and more. Very intuitive to use, well built, small and has great quality Boss effects. I've had one for 3 years, used nearly every weekend and it's never missed a trick.
7. Oh, don't do it Lozz!!! You'll look weird and you'll be confused by the extra knob.
8. I know you might find it hard given that your time is obviously at a premium, but the next step is surely getting out of the bedroom and playing with other people! Get thee to a jam night or put a few ads out looking for people of a similar background. Playing in a band will help you progress as a musician in a way that's impossible to learn any other way. Good luck!
9. No more 'thing'? Jeez, sorry Blue. I didn't know
10.
Truckstop, could you give me an example of some of those 80's disco tones? I would think of Bernard Edwards as 70s (late 70's at that) but maybe his stingray tone (both pups on yamaha) is something to strive towards with this bass.
I think I can pretty much nail the 'Last Night A DJ Saved My Life' tone using the bridge pup solo played close to the bridge. Leaving the bridge pup selected and playing above the neck pup you can get the whole Sister Sledge vibe; He's The Greatest Dancer, Lost In Music etc. Blending the neck pup and playing by the bridge gets the Chic sound perfectly. You gotta use worn in strings though. Otherwise you'll sound too crisp. I have a robust finger style and can get that nice burpy tone by playing hard. YMMV, we all play differently and it takes a lot of experimentation to get where you want to be. Alex
11. Low D would be handy and being able to play scales in E by working across the neck rather than up and down the neck should help. I often find that the open E sounds a little different to other fretted notes so being able to fret the E on the B strings is another bonus. Worth a try at least!
12. Oh my god, why haven't you bought the Roger Waters P in the marketplace here?
13. sh*t the bed!
14. I certainly remember the fine tuners on the bridge but couldn't go into more detail than that!
15. Hello all, I'm looking for a local-ish luthier/carpenter that would be able to thickness a body blank for me. I've got a nice chunk of labernum that needs about 15mm took off it and then made nice and level each side. Anyone know of anybody in the Herts area that could help? I live in St. Albans and would prefer to not have to travel too far! Cheers! Alex
16. Very cool! Singer's got a great scream! Nice to see your drummer's not overdoing the whole double bass pedal/blast thing that's endemic in metal at the moment.
17. Getting function gigs in a nutshell: Get an excellent website put together with high quality content - Audio, video, and pictures. It costs money! A lot of people don't use agents to find bands for parties, weddings and functions. The website is the most powerful tool you have to attract potential clients. Get an agent and give him/her something to sell. Don't bother with pubs. DO play private parties. Throw a party and get your band to play. Invite lots and lots of people. You'll be surprised at how influential your friends and acquaintances will be at passing work on to you. I organised my wife's 25th birthday party last year and as a direct consequence we've got two corporate functions this year that will pay very well indeed. Good luck! Alex
18. Vibe, man. That album sounds great! It's got all the little niggles and background noises that give classic recordings a great feel. There's quite a few occasions where things sound a bit 'laid-back'! Truckstop
19. Yeah I sadly don't have a decent laptop or the money to buy one! I'll keep my eyes peeled for an old skool workstation and hopefully that'll do the job! Thanks pal
20. If I see one available in collecting distance, I'll have it! Cheers!
21. How much would you want for the Korg(?!) Thanks for your thoughts! Yeah, lots of googling and youtubing hasn't been helpful so looks like I'll need to save some money and buy a nice workstation. Cheers Alex
