1. If i remember right, the Tanglewood Canyons appeared after Cort launched it's own range in the UK (including the luthite Curbow design, previously branded Tanglewood).

I guess Tanglewood just decided to keep the design in their range, altho i suspect the Canyons dont carry the official 'Curbow' seal of approval, but are merely just a cash-in :)

Tanglewood reps are renowned for their 'own version of events'....

  2. I can't see any sense in wanting to be part of the game - the whole diy ethic appeals far more to me - we've recorded and produced a cd for very little and without owing anybody money, we're promoting our own shows, our product is on sale on iTunes and we can play where we want when we want without some industry bod looming over us saying yay or nay. Music remains for us a wonderful executive hobby with enough of an income to make it worthwhile, and we have the time to pursue far more meaningful careers that guarantee and deliver far, far more, without the one thing we enjoy becoming 'hard work' for us....

The 'business' itself looks to be exploiting this current fad of self sufficiency amongst bands - doesn't that make the whole thing seem even more sinister? We do all the hard work for them, then they cherry-pick what they want.

Pah, it aint worth it bro - get a proper job :)

well, that's quite some skillz you have there, sir.... i would have had to scrape away 15yrs worth of dust to find mine i reckon :)

  4. Welcome Badass!!!!

I know he used G&L ASAT basses in Skunk Anansie (altho i wasnt aware of the brand at the time) and was always a fan of his big, grindy tone, so much so that i had to find out what all the fuss was about myself :)

He also had quite a neat pedalboard setup, tho i can't recall the specifics, i remember him being a fan of parallel effects loops (something everybody seems to be doing now!) - he was interviewed in an old issue of Bass Player mag and listed all his equipment - i don't have a copy of it to hand but might be able to dig it up - perhaps someone else here has that copy?

No clue what he's up to nowadays i'm afraid....

*edit* wow - looks like i spent waaay to long writing this - peeps beat me to it

  5.
G&L L2000 Tribute. It's active but a flick of a switch and hey presto it's passive P or J bass!

Should be able to get one s/h for around £350.
yes, yes, yes and YES!

    +1,000,000

  6.
It just wasnt the tone I was after. I tried it blind and have decided to pass it on at a very attractive price.

EBS Multicomp has filled the gap Ben. Nice try...

    Cheers

Hi Col - nice to hear you're happy with it - hopefully will get my hands on the Pickle Pie tomorrow....

  7. Amazon i guess....

*edit* sorry, before i went gushing over Mr Erlewine's book, i meant to address the OP - you mentioned what looked like a rise at the body end of the neck, making playing past the 12th fret almost impossible. Check the straightness of the neck at this point, by holding the strings down (like a straight-edge) at about the 12th/15th fret and the last fret - the neck should be pretty much dead straight here and any decent kind of gap may signify a 'hump' or 'rise' which would require more 'thorough' work than just a simple setup would suffice....

  8. +1 to a copy of Dan's book, especially the latest revision which has got me wondering whether i should ditch my dog-eared old copy for a shiny new one :)

Kept it close by me when i worked in a guitar shop doing setups all day - worth it's weight in gold. And it's so chock-full of other interesting guitar building/maintenence stuff (which is also worth reading) that you may once or twice consider ditching the house and car to become a luthier!

  9. Try the 'Bass Grimoire' by Adam Kadmon - it presents quite a logical route to understanding theory, but keep a teacher or experienced musician friend close by to help you through the tricky bits (there are quite a few as you'd expect!).

  10.
It needs 0.78 A would 800MA be OK?
800mA would be ok, but i'd bet it would run a little hot as it's very close to the requirements of the compressor - 1000mA or higher would be much better. I don't recall what psu came with the Alesis originally.

When selecting a PSU, think the same way as you would with your bass rig - Headroom - more is better :)

  11.
I'm also looking for an Ampeg SVT-12HE but it looks like they're discontinued and impossible to find! Any idea where to grab one?
I use a couple of these and they put out a great sound for such a small box, although they aren't exactly light by todays standards. I found a pair on eBay quite recently actually - they do still seem to pop up from time to time, so worth a try if you can find one.

  12.
Ive asked this in general bass discussion, ive recently got a fender bass string tensioner for the headstock of a bass i'm buildong, but whats strange is there are no grooves cut into the underside for the strings to sit in? on my other bass they're cut in not sure if this makes much difference only in that the strings may just pop out from either side.

    Any ideas

    Thanks
Real-deal Fender ones don't tend to have grooves - it'll work just fine tho....
