Can anyone point out a good example of fuzz/distorted bass?
EskimoBassist replied to Annoying Twit's topic in Effects
If anyone did like that Maybeshewill song (they've just released a new album "I Was Here For A Moment And Then I Was Gone - it's bloody brilliant so do have a listen) you will most likely enjoy this aswell, And So I Watch You From Afar: Fuzz starts at 3:47, but please listen to the rest of the song, especially after the breakdown around 6mins in, it's beastly! Their new album is amazing throughout, and I do really, really mean that. -
What are you listening to right now?
The first 3 minutes of this, for me, are just musical perfection. Adore it.
Cheers for this, haven't listened to GY!BE in a while, a nice reminder of a great band. -

A fellow Maybeshewill fan! I waas going to post something from them aswell, or something from ASIWYFA's Gangs. It's a great time for Post-Rock in the UK at the moment. -
A big plus one to all of Monckyman's advice ^^

Bought a pedaltrain jnr off him a few weeks ago; great guy to deal with, was sent quickly and arrived in top condition. Top bloke, cheers Rick!
Yeah I was in a band for a while where the guitarist used a lot of delay and reverb and digital chicanery, and it pretty much ruled me out of doing that on bass, but left the door wide open for me to use fuzz and other noisy stuff.
I think you got a pretty sweet deal there. FUZZ/SYNTH > Delays and Ambience IMO.
Octave, No... Delay, No... Fuzz, No... Wait... Envelope, No... Chorus. Damn it. I give up!!
Totally agree, it's an impossible decision! Leaning towards Overdrive, Fuzz or Octave though...

Post your pedal board - Basschat style!!
EskimoBassist replied to dudewheresmybass's topic in Effects
Yeah I have indeed considered the M9, but for it's even relatively small footprint, if it were only to replace my delay, reverb and chorus, it would take the same space on my board. The possibilities of the extra sounds in the unit though are very tempting, I could ditch most of my set up for one, that I am sure but even so my seperate stomps nag me to stay faithful. cheddatom - Yeah, I used a Korg AX3000B for years. Really, the only solution, if I want to keep my large set up is to put up with a large board or if I want to downsize a little but retain the same sounds, to buy an M9 and quit whining! I just don't really know what to do though. I'm gonna put everything on my new Pedal Train Jnr and see how much space I have to spare and then go from there. I'll probably end up getting a pedaltrain 2 or 3 as they look like more reasonable and manageable sizes than my Tourman. -

Although for the last few years I've been very used to having a sizeable board, a slight change in direction of my band's music, coupled with university work which has reduced gigging and two knackered shoulder, I'm really considering downsizing. I've already been forced to, going from a 12/13 pedal set up down to just a few essentials (Tuner, Compressor, Pre/DI, Overdrive, Fuzz, Phaser and Octaver), from Diago Tourman down to a Pedal Train Jnr. Thing is I still want to use my Reverb, Chorus and Delay pedals and even though I probably won't be using my Korg G5 live anymore, I still want to have some filter effects so I'm considering 3leaf Groove Regulator 2, which would work well with my octave and fuzz. It doesn't look like this down sizing is going to last very long to be honest! I don't even use an effects looper anymore thanks to lack of space, which I sorely miss live. Major gas to shift my CEB-3 for a UniChorus or an Analogman Mini w/Blend and deep mod, and possibly to get a different fuzz pedal, although I love my Bass Big Muff, I am tempted by something with better control of the clean blend. And I'll probably end up getting an OC-2 or a BOD aswell to replace my much loved OC-3... -
-
I've got a CEB-3 myself, very good for the money. Solid as a tank, very modern sounding chorus with the ability to sweep the range of signal that the Chorus effects, so you can keep your lowend plenty intact and clean. The Markbass really does look like the dogs dangly bits, bit more than I would want to pay for a Chorus/Flanger but if you use a lot of either it's definitely worth its' weight in gold. Great sounds, lots of functionality and control and it looks pretty cool aswell. As far as other pedals go that you might be interested in, check out the EBS UniChorus for something equally as professional as the Mark Bass, but a fair bit cheaper and with smaller footprint as it doesn't have multiple digital presets, and the EHX Neo Clone is a new favourite that seems to be popping up, much less control than the other pedals but with a competitive price tag to match. Personally I'm after a UniChorus or an Analogman Mini w/Deep mod and blend, but the Analogman rarely comes up for sale and when it does it's pretty expensive.
i quite like the bass riff here
Quality song choice here, I had completely forgotten about this but it is truly a gem. Still haven't seen EITS live, but I really want to. If it weren't for exams I would have seen them this month in Manchester.
It's a shame that the greatest intro of all time was done on a guitar with an octave pedal.... I swear hoppus cocks up in the second run through of that riff and scuffs a note, useless bass player imho
If you're referring to Hysteria, that line is played by Wolstenholme on his Bass through a plethora of Fuzz, Synth, Octave etc. And you're right about Hoppus. But I've never really regarded him as a particularly amazing player so it doesn't suprise me in the least. But I guess their music was never really about perfection so perhaps it doesn't matter that much.

Managed to guess that Hysteria would be number 1 without even watching the clip. Deserved inclusion of Jeremy Was A Racecar Driver though IMHO, ncie little bass part that.

Battles of the Bands totally sucks
it's the pubs and scammy clubs that are onto it now that i detest it's 'Quiz night' mentality, NOTHING to do with helping young bands or promoting live music total crap, it just totally pisses me off...... NEVER PLAY FOR FREE
Never play for free? Although I follow most of your line of thought with regards to BOTBs, especially together with the animosity that they breed amongst bands and the near impossibility for the judging to be impartial, I do not support your idea of NEVER playing for free. An inexperienced or new band need a venue to showcase their music and gain stage time, who is going to support a band, especially if they have little/no following and do not have the reputation of a more established act? I have been in a band for nearly 5 years now and have indeed played our fair share of BOTBs, with a good level of success, mostly when we first started. Through such showcase events we have been put in touch with a number of promoters and events organisers, which has led to a great deal of other, paid performances. It does sound like you've got the sh###y end of the stick, for which I am sorry, but don't let your bad experience cloud your judgement. In all fairness, if your pay packet doesn't cover all the incumbant necessary costs of your performance then indeed you have, in some way or another, paid for the right to play. Some of the best and most worthwhile gigs that I have ever played have barely contributed to the cost of our performance. Perhaps it is charity, but if you are in the position to afford it and you judge the experience to be worth the personal expense (adjusted for the altruistic value gained from the event) then I see no wrong in it. Remember, we've all got to start somewhere and to be honest if I was the promoter who first bravely put on the 14 year olds that my band once were, then I probably wouldn't have offered to buy them a few drinks, let alone cover their transport costs. Just my opinion, of course. -

Yo! Have a read of this
-
Basically what you need is some kind of buffer before your overdrive to make it behave properly. Either a Variable Impedence Buffer (there's a pinned thread at the top of the Effects forum about this) or just a pedal with a buffer in it, like any Boss pedal, would most likely do the job. A recent thread came up about this, I'll see if I can dig it up. This is quite a common problem and others have managed to solve it so I shouldn't think it will be too hard for you to do the same!

1 mic to record a jam? (for own listening).

Plus the one on the ZOOM H series. We invested in a Zoom H2 and it's absolutely brilliant, really simple to use and great sound quality. Can't recommend it highly enough. -
Best order for pedals on a board, and which XLR to DI?
EskimoBassist replied to Clarky's topic in Effects
Remember though, if you send FOH a signal from your Sansamp but have your compressor in the chain after it, then your DI signal will be uncompressed. Personally I would go into the Polytune first, then the Compulator and then the Sansamp. You can mute both your DI signal and your line signal to your amp by stepping on your tuner whereas if you had the tuner after the Sansamp you would always be heard through the PA no matter what (so if you change basses this will eliminate any popping coming through the PA and would allow totally silent tuning of course) and your signal will have the same original compression through both your amp and the FOH. -

Three AMAZING new releases in the past month already, which almost completely passed me by: For the Instrumental/Alternative/Post-Rock fans out there we have Maybeshewill's sophomore album, "I Was Here For A Moment Then I Was Gone" and also And So I Watch You From Afar's second album, "Gangs" (which picks up nicely where The Letters Ep finished off). And anyone who is a fan of Dubstep/Dance/Drum & Bass will most likely already know about the release of Emalkay's long-awaited debut album, "Eclipse". Just wow.... I think I've got plenty to listen to for the next few weeks, especially as I have just picked up The Music's compliation release of Singles, B-Sides, Rarities et al from 2001-2005, which was released last year. Cracking stuff, big shame that they're splitting up, but I'm very pleased that I have tickets to their last ever show in Leeds. EDIT: Here's a few youtube links incase you were interested in any of these acts:- The lead single and closing track from Maybeshewill's I Was Here... , To The Skies From A Hillside: First track off ASIWYFA's Gangs, BEAUTIFULUNIVERSEMASTERCHAMPION: and the new single from Emalkay's Eclipse, Fabrication:
