You can't beat an all valve head... I'm afraid!
EskimoBassist replied to dave74200's topic in Amps and Cabs
This thread has made my day, an absolutely hilarious read. Thanks to all involved! -
Recently I've been getting very heavily into Post-Rock, think Sigur Ros, Maybeshewill, Explosions In The Sky, Godspeed! You Black Emperor etc. Not particularly for the Bass playing, it has always been a genre which I've been interested in and it's great fun to play live too. Also, been harbouring a love for Drum & Bass, Dubstep and general Electronica, which isn't exactly helping my effects addiction. As much as I love the music, seeing it live and going to the nights, I enjoy playing along at home and figuring out how the weird sounds are created on my home just as much. SO, lots of respect for John Davies & Nerve.
I'd go for this personally http://www.classicandcoolguitars.co.uk/basses/ampegrig.htm
That but with a 4x10 cabinet!

Long time user and lover of the Boss OC-3 here, great digital pedal. If you want an analogue sound, go for the OC-2, can't get a better synthy octaver really, especially for the price. If you want something clean and precise, go for the OC-3, has a really good distortion circuit built in too. The MXR BOD and the Aguiler Octamizer have a fair deal more control and seem to be able to produce every different octave sound under the sun, but they are both far more pricey and are also analogue like the OC-2.

Not really much for me to add, I really agree with everything said above about the M-80, great pedal. I've been using mine for over a year now and I think it's fantastic. Really has become an aways on pedal with me as a pre-amp and having a fully switchable distortion channel is a massive plus over the Sansamp in opinion.

Bonjour Thibaut!

Post your pedal board - Basschat style!!
EskimoBassist replied to dudewheresmybass's topic in Effects
Not a bad small board mate, I have the TU-2 and 105Q myself too, both cracking pedals. What's the FM-4 like on Bass then? I've been gassing after one for ages but haven't taken the plunge yet, worth it? -
Sounds like a perfectly good signal chain to me. Yeah, I would put the Whammy second in your chain, just after your TU-2, helps with tracking to send it as pure a signal as possible. Personally I like to have my compressor near the start of the chain, after my tuner in fact, but that's all personal preference as well, as it helps having a compressor in front of any octavers or synths. As far as wah before/after your distortion pedals, big personal preference. The wah sound is much more extreme and pronounced when placed AFTER the gain units, think Timmy C, but I prefer to have my distortions after my Wah.
I don't normally do pedals but I am looking for the Muse Uprising sound from my Ric 4003/LMII/Schroeder 1212L Anyone got thoughts on what sort of pedal can help me achieve this? I have been trawling through the site and got lots of good pedal advice and googling extensively so am guessing overdrive - but some personal feedback may be the best direct route to get ananswer. Muse forum suggests M181 Bass Blow Tourch, Harmonix Bass Big Muff. Also a guy on YouTube with Digitech Synth Wah + Muff
Hey, Basically you're looking for a very Synthy Fuzz sound. The Blowtorch would probably do a very good job, although I haven't used it myself. Anyway, when I play it I do indeed use a Bass Big Muff, sounds pretty great, bit of a go to for most Muse songs for me. I then either combine it with my OC-3 for a little octave down to make it sound even bigger, or my Korg G5 to add a pretty aggressive synthy fuzz. To be fair I can get the sound just using my G5. Realistically I think you can get a great approximation using the Bass Big Muff, or a Russian Muff for that matter, either with the Bass Boost or the Dry Blend switched on, make sure to push the gain a fair deal. If you still want to make it bigger, slab an octaver in your chain before the Muff, but it's not totally necessary. I just dial in a little octave, still keep most of my clean signal, but it really beefs things up. Hope that was some help! EDIT: Check this guy out on Yooootoob - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAMFG0xV3PE He's using an EHX MicroSynth for his main Synthy Fuzz sound and then adds a SansAmp Bass Driver on the end for a little more grit and eq. Not a bad go at the sound.

I picked up a nice Zoom Ultra Fuzz off here just for gated synthy fuzz sounds. Really nice pedal, nicknamed the poor man's Fuzz Factory for a good reason!
-
I would also recommend some kind of Pre/Di, like the SansAmp or the MXR M-80, both totally different sounds where the overdrive is concerned. I always carry my M-80 around with me, plenty of dirt on tap if I want it, but it's really used for the Pre section so that I always have a nice Bass sound, no matter what I'm running into. I run the amp flat behind me, merely as a monitor so I can hear myself on stage and send my signal straight to FOH, which is generally left well alone.

Demeter, Diamond, EBS multicomp or BBE optostomp
EskimoBassist replied to stevieb85's topic in Effects
All about the MultiComp -
The ISP Technologies Decimator is a bit of an industry standard where noise reduction in pedal form comes in, pricey but worth iti for the results. On the cheaper side, Boss have the NS-2, which from what I have heard also does the job nicely. Probably check ebay for a good deal on one of those second hand.
Made a couple of changes this week, here's what I've ended up with:
Really, really nice board! Distinct lack of dirt or fuzz though, how come? -
Played yesterday afternoon on the at a youth festival in North Yorkshire, CultureShock, on the Main Stage. Went well! Not far off 4,000 on site and we had a large chunk watching us play. I was interested to see how it would go, especially as that was the first time I'd played, let alone practiced, with a full line up, with a horn section and a backing singer joining us just for the performance. Didn't think I did too badly either, considering that's the first time I've touched a Bass in about a month too!

The relatively new EHX Bass Big Muff is a great place to start. I bought one to replace my NYC Muff and my Ultra Fuzz. Fantastic pedal!

Yeah really nice, neat little board! Had to totally reassemble mine last night, having divided and split it up going to Uni, but now the big board is back together in all its' glory Mwuhahahaaa. I had forgotten how much I missed my pedals until I realised I'd been widdling with them for nearly 4 hours last night. I then remember why I hate them all so much when I had to move the board back downstairs where it lives, my poor shoulders! -
Quickly out growing your mini? Perhaps you are heading back to a larger pedaltrain again!
-
MXR M-80 FTW!
-
Yeah, I agree with most of the above. I would stick with the chain you have at the moment, I used to run a similar chain with a number of singles before a multi (Korg AX3000B), so I experimented with the order a lot to see what would work best, and a signal path similar to yours is what I settled on.

EskimoBassist replied to dudewheresmybass's topic in Effects
I'm thinking the best "bang-for-size" synth pedal would be the Octavius Squeezer. I love my G5 but it is MASSIVE. Surely though Finbar, if you're moving back towards singles again, you'll have an octaver and a fuzz pedal. Could get a nice envelope filter and do it full on analogue... Basically mate you're gonna end up with a monster board again and there's nothing you can do about it! It's always "just one more"... -
As others have said, the Tech 21 VT Bass is a great pedal for this sort of sound. I'd also suggest trying the EBS Valvedrive.
Exactly what I was going to say. Either that or one of the Dave Hall pedals.

EQ Pedals - is the Boss GE7B still the weapon of choice?
EskimoBassist replied to fretmeister's topic in Effects
I have the GEB-7, great pedal. The overall level is fantastic, especially for those solo runs. Picked mine up nice and cheaply from these very forums, a good addition to my pedal collection.
