1. I take it there'll be a reduction for appearing with Noel Edmonds now?
2.
Clearly hand signed
As opposed to what?? Willy signed????? Most people sign with their hands these days............
3. Just trust your own ears Oscar... being your band, you are probably the best judge. To get a little technical though, beware of your room's acoustics and 'peaks & troughs' in your mixes. If you're mixing in a bedroom environment, it might pay to take the mattress off the bed and stand it up on the wall directly behind where you're mixing. Close any curtains as well. Remember, its better to cut rather than boost with regard to EQ. Try for a generic 'hi-fi' mix as this will suit most. The songs will sound different on headphones, in cars, in bathrooms, in pubs etc. you could end up with about ten different mixes and a bloody great headache!! Good luck.
4.
Superb! Love this entire thread. And just to pick up on something tBBC said, you don't have to be gay to have a rent boy chained to your wall.
Certainly adds to the usability factor though..........
5.
As far as I know the Beatbass has a 30" scale. A quick search reveals Acidbass has got one, so maybe you could drop him a PM to check.
It does indeed.... my bad.
6. Your budget would stretch to a second hand Sandberg. I'm sure there's one for sale at the mo... relic'ed JM4 I believe.
7. Harley Benton Beatbass. The Hofner copy. Very light, 32" scale (I think) and very playable. Funky looks too. Have a look here.
8. This was my old rig before I got the Markbass gear. Loved it..... but TOTALLY impractical when shifting about. Couldn't fault the tone though!
9. I've got a HK E.L.I.A.S system which I think is the next stepping stone up. A little more grunt than the Lucas and two subs. Copes admirably with the whole band, including drums going through it. They pop up now and again on ebay so worth keeping an eye out for. HK audio are superb IMO. Am i right in assuming they are the PA division of Hughes & Kettner?
10. Even got a three foot tall stone 'Aphrodite' in the garden which the wife hates. Going to scrub it down, paint it gold and stick it in a corner!!
11. Chosen the colour scheme... black ceilings, black tongue & groove with burgundy wallpaper and oak floor. Mrs Tombboy reckons it will look like a brothel, which I'm chuffed about!!
12. Ok, electrician has been in and supplied power to the lights. The small vocal booth took longer than anticipated due to having to gain a masters in quantum mathematics before we could work out the drywall cuts. We had to cut for the non parallel walls and cope with a vaulted ceiling. Got there in the end. Just got to fill all the drywall screws and joints, then on with the tongue & groove on the blockwork. The vocal booth.... this will be acoustically tiled throughout to provide a 'dead' sound. Looking down the corridor to the booth View from mixing room to vocal booth. Note the two windows to allow visual cues as well as audio. Main room.
13.
Does anyone else notice how retracted the upper horn is on the axis bass? I'm thinking that unless they've got some seriously clever design work going on that there's going to be insane neck dive on it. Mark
Indeed, VERY clever design work. Scaled down headstock, mahogany tone block to add sustain and weight under the pickups. They've done some intense R&D and I think they pretty much know what building basses is all about now.
14. Why not call it the OwenBaker... for that extra personal touch!
15. After a Christmas/New Year break we cracked on again this morning. Insulated the mixing room and got one skin of the ceiling up. Purchasing the T&G surrounds tomorrow. Really beginning to take shape now. Just a couple of days away from laying the floor down and decorating.
16. Six pages and no one has even sniffed at Bruce Foxton yet???
17. If it's a '76 and got 'radio' style knobs FFS buy it man!!! Worth a tidy fortune. This site should help you date it more accurately.
18. Both great choices there. I have a Markbass TA503. Really light, you have to keep it in a rack to stop it floating away. GREAT tonal variety and controllable range. LOADS of oomph!!
19. I'm a basic player... no flash fills etc. R5, R5... repeat if necessary. I heven't got the time or drive to practice more. I should do really but some things are more important to me. However, I'm pleased with the noise I make, as are my other band members and people who hear us play. And I enjoy making that noise. I suppose thats all that matters.
20.
I was told i'd get a full refund... And if that's not what i get, i'll kick off... But for now i'm giving them the BOTD.
TBH, If Reverb have advertised EBMM SR5's @ £499.00 and stock listed at 'available' (which it was, when I checked before they withdrew the page) then they are legally obliged to complete the transaction at the time you placed the order. Just the same as displaying goods in a shop marked up wrong.... you get them for the price marked! Stick to your guns and see how far it gets you....
21.
our inferior trans-atlantic brethren
Easy fella.
22. I sent him a message saying "Actually, I did have something more interesting to do with my time so I went and done that.... got bored, so I thought I'd send you a message. I'm so glad that you actually have the guitar 'here' ready to purchase. The amount of guitar sellars on ebay who seem to forget this important factor! I, personally wouldn't let anyone into my house either.... mind you, I live in Broadmoor which sort of restricts visitors but... ho hum! Also, can I spell it 'Bayse'? Just for a giggle? Thanks. 'I am a shop'????? f*** me, I was locked up just for saying I was a Tractor!!! Kudos to you pal!! You say I have to look at your shop profile to prove you are not an idiot................... I have seven f***ing psy-bloody-chiatrists still trying to fathom me out. If I'd known then that all it takes is an ebay account I'd be free to slaughter anybody at free will today! Your's, Septimus 'T' Froggg
23. One all! Double or quits?
24. FFS Chris... I honestly think that you purposely wait until I spend money on a new bass, THEN pull something like this out of the bag! Me & you are gonna fall out!!
25.
Really interesting discussion and loads of good points well made - all I'll add is two things - firstly I practice everyday and within that I always work on some aspect of my technique - so when it comes to actually playing in a LIVE situation I don't have to. Secondly I was at the recent Manchester Bass Day and sitting with my good buddy Jon Thorne (ex-Lamb bassist, now solo artist and all round top muso and lovely bloke). He and I were talking to another chap sitting in front of us in the theatre waiting for Richard Bona's masterclass to start. The other chap - who we'd struck up conversation with was talking about nice basses, and lots of technical playing, I was chipping in with some enthusiastic comments on both subjects - when Jon stopped us both and said something rather profound - pointing at my chest - saying: "this is the real instrument here, you the individual, the bass is just a piece of wood, I want to listen to the musician, not just the instrument..." The point is obvious I guess. I will say though I've just been away for a couple of days, took my bass with me but forgot a lead to plug it into my Tascam MPBT1 unit - so I ended up practicing unplugged. The bass did sound fine and I had a good thirty minute practice session - but I agree with Mark's point about these being electric instruments... or as Gary Willis puts it - 'finesse instruments' - which if you have as incredible plucking control as him you'd have to have developed that by being plugged in - and personally that's the way I try and approach bass guitar. I have recorded going direct as well recently and got superb results if that counts as well. Your sound is the first thing people notice when they listen to you play so my advice is work on that sound and the music you play as thoroughly as you can - experience with lots of different amps also helps as in a pro situation you could find yourself using almost any kind of rig on stage - it's good to know how to get the sound you want in a short space of time - because with a crap sound you feel like crap and that defnitely affects you're playing. M
Probably the best post I've read all year.
